MUMBAI: Actor Navin Nischol, arrested on charges of abetting wife Gitanjalis suicide, has done a turnaround.
Denying that he and Gitanjali were harassed and thrown out of their own flat by his younger brother Pravin,Navin says he was forced to live separately due to 'extreme mood swings' in his wifes behaviour which led to tensions within the extended family.
Filing for bail in a sessions court, Nischols plea said his wife had ended her life "in a fit of depression".
His brother Pravin, whos been arrested on the same charges, has also sought bail.
Pravins application says his success as the CEO of a film production house, Entertainment One, had made Gitanjali jealous of him.
Navin has pleaded that he was living with his mother and Pravin at a flat in Khar since 1996 but was forced to move out in 2000 because Gitanjali had orced him to do so.
The application also clarifies that the flat in Khar was taken on rent by Pravin and not owned by Navin as media reports had suggested.
Navin has also stated that Gitanjali was never happy with his family and used "to constantly engage in futile arguments" with his mother.

It is argued that Gitanjali was suffering from depression and was prescribed medication.
She was also given to extreme mood swings and "displayed aggression on many occasions".
Speaking of her brother, Manmohan Shukul, the bail plea says he had met Gitanjali only on three or four occasions since her marriage to Nischol in 1996.

MUMBAI: Actor Navin Nischol's second wife Geetanjali committed suicide by hanging herself in her flat at Mahim in Mumbai late on Saturday. Forty-five-year-old Geetanjali left a suicide note holding her husband Nischol responsible for her action.
Geetanjali was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the living room of her third-floor apartment at Laxman Nivas, a building where several Marathi actors reside. Her body was sent to JJ hospital for post-mortem.
Though the police were tightlipped about the suicide note, it is learnt that she had alleged that Nischol was responsible.
"Navin, an alcoholic, is useless and is torturing me and that is why I am
ending my life," said the suicide note neatly written in English on a piece of paper found in her bedroom. Nischol was not available for comment.
Police sub-inspector A Mulani said,"We received information that a lady had committed suicide and we rushed to Laxman Nivas to find Geetanjali hanging from the ceiling fan."
Due to the differences between the couple, Nischol used to stay in Pune and rarely visited her. Geetanjali, who was childless, stayed in this flat with two servants.
The servants told cops that they saw Geetanjali at night when she told them she was going to sleep. They did not know when she committed suicide.
Nischol, who was in Pune, arrived in Mumbai early on Sunday morning after getting the information. "Based on Geetanjali's allegations we had called in Navin and questioned him," said Jeo Gaikwad, senior inspector, Mahim police station.
In February, Geetanjali had told The Times of India that Nischol's younger brother Praveen had thrown her and her out-of-work husband out of their Mahim house.
Mumbai, May 2 (UNI) Bollywood actor Navin Nischol's wife Geetanjali, who committed suicide an April 22, had blamed her husband and his brother Pravin for driving her to take the extreme step. In the suicide note, recovered by the police from her residence, Geetanjali said an alcoholic Navin Nischol, instigated by Pravin, tortured her and she could not face it any more. Both brothers were arrested on April 28 on the basis of the suicide note. The suicide note reads, ''Navinji, I love you like God and this is what you did to me. I, Geetanjali Navin Nischol, am committing suicide due to my husband Mr Navin Nischol, who has tortured me. He is an alcoholic who cannot reform. I am fed up. His brother Pravin Nishchol is instigating him to torture me. I am ending my life. I hold Pravin Nischol responsible for my death.'' The note also adds that she had made a will but whatever she had, should go to old people's home. Geetanjali's brother, Manmohan Shukul, has alleged that Navin Nischol, a habitual drinker, frequently beat his sister. According to the FIR that has been lodged, Geetanjali had called up her brother on the fateful day around 11:30 hrs and informed him that Navin was divorcing her and this had made her hypertensive. The same day at 2230 hours, the brother was informed about his sister's death by Geetanjali's servant, according to the FIR.
Personal life
Navin studied at the Bangalore MIlitary School,Navin was first married to Dev Anand's niece, Neelu Kapur, sister of Shekhar Kapur. After Neelu found out that Navin was having an affair with starlet Padmini Kapila, she divorced him, and turned to Christianity.
Shortly after that Padmini started having an affair with director Prakash Mehra, and broke up with Navin.
Navin then had an affair with Pimma, a Delhi-based married woman with two children.
Navin then married divorcee Geetanjali. On 24 April 2006, his wife committed suicide by hanging at her residence. She blamed both Navin and his brother, Pravin, for her suicide. He also acted in some bollywood films, most commonly he is famous for the steamy sex scene in aastha.
