பழம்பெரும் நடிகர்களில் தேங்காய் சீனிவாசன் அனைத்து கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கும் பொருத்தமானவராக இருந்தார். 

வில்லனாக, நகைச்சுவையாக, குணச்சித்திரமாக நாயகனாகக்கூட நடித்து அசத்தியவர்.

காமெடியில் தனக்கென்று தனி பாணியை கடைபிடித்து ரசிக்க வைத்தவர். அவரது குடும்பத்திலிருந்து அவரது பேரன் ஆதித்யா நடிக்க வந்திருக்கிறார்.

இந்த நேரத்தில் தேங்காய் சீனிவாசனின் மகன் சிவசங்கர் அவரது தந்தையின் நினைவுகள் குறித்து பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

“சின்ன வயசில் அப்பாவை நாங்கள் அதிகமாகப் பார்க்க முடியாது. பயங்கர பிஸியாக இருப்பார்.

70 களில் பல படங்களில் தொடர்ந்து நடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அம்மாதான் எங்களைப் பார்த்துக்கொள்வார்கள். ஆன்மீகத்தில் அப்பாவுக்கு அதிகமான ஈடுபாடு. கோவில் கோவிலாக டூர் போகும்போது மட்டும் தான் நாங்கள் அப்பாவோடு இருப்போம்.

வீட்டில் இருக்கும்போது தரையில் பாய் போட்டு உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டு, நண்பர்களோடு அரட்டையடிப்பது அவருக்கு ரொம்பவும் பிடிக்கும்.

அவருக்கு சினிமாவும் நண்பர்களும்தான் முக்கியமாக இருந்தது. மேஜர் சுந்தர்ராஜன், வெண்ணிறஆடை மூர்த்தி, ஜெய்சங்கர், நாகேஷ், சுருளிராஜன், அசோகன் போன்றோர் நெருங்கிய நண்பர்களாக இருந்தனர்.

இரண்டாவது ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமைகளில் அனைவரும் வீட்டுக்கு வந்து விடுவார்கள்.

நாங்கள் குழந்தைகளாக இருப்பதால் கதவுக்கு பின்னால் இருந்து பயந்து கொண்டு பார்ப்போம். ஒவ்வொருத்தருக்கும் பெரிய ரசிகர்கள் செல்வாக்கு இருந்தாலும் எளிமையாகப் பழகுவார்கள்.

சென்னைக்கு வெளியே காரில் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும் போது வழியில் எங்காவது வயல் வெளியைப் பார்த்து காரை நிறுத்தி தலையில் துண்டை போட்டுக்கொண்டு பம்ப் செட்டில் குளிப்பார். 

இளநீர் வெட்டிக் கொடுப்பார்கள் அதை சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு வருவோம். எங்காவது மசால் வடை வாசம் வந்தால் காரை நிறுத்தி சாப்பிட்டுவிட்டுதான் வருவார்.

ஒருநாள் ‘தர்மயுத்தம்’ படத்தில் நடித்த சமயத்தில் அந்த கோட் சூட்டோடு விட்டுக்கு வந்தார். நான் அழுது அடம் பிடித்தேன்.

அப்பா இந்த ட்ரெஸ்ஸில் உங்களைப் பார்த்தால் என் பிரண்ட்ஸ் எல்லாரும் சிரிக்கிறாங்கப்பா என்று அழுதேன். ஊரே  என்னைப் பாராட்டுது நீ என்னடான்னா அழற என்று கேட்டு சிரித்தார்.

ஒரே வருஷத்துல 35 படங்களில் நடித்துக் கொடுத்தார். நாலு மணிநேரம் ஒருகால் ஷீட், ஒரே ஸ்டுடியோவில் மாறி மாறி நடித்துக் கொடுத்தார்.

மேக்கப் போடும்போது உதவி இயக்குநர்கள் வந்து கேரக்டரைச் சொல்லி விட்டுப்போய் விடுவார்கள். ஸ்பாட்ல போய் தன் பாணியில் நடித்துக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.

சம்பளம் கூட கறாராகப் பேசி வாங்க மாட்டார். தயாரிப்பாளர் வந்து அண்ணே இந்தப் படம் சரியா போகலைண்ணே என்று சொன்னால் சரி பராவாயில்லை என்று விட்டு விடுவார்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கூட நெருங்கிய நட்பு கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆனால் எந்தப் பதவியும் கேட்காமல் தேர்தல் நேரத்தில் அவருக்காகப் பிரச்சாரங்களில் ஈடுபட்டு வந்தார்.

கடைசிக் காலங்களில் உடல்நிலையைப் பார்த்துக் கொள்ள படங்களில் நடிப்பதை குறைத்துக் கொண்டார். வருஷம் ஒரு முறை படம் தயாரிக்கலாம் என்று நினைத்திருந்தார்.

அப்பா தயாரித்த முதல் படம் ‘கிருஷ்ணன் வந்தான்’. சிவாஜி, மோகன் ஆகியோர் நடித்திருந்தர்கள். அப்பாவிடம் சிவாஜி சம்பளம் வாங்கவே இல்லை.

அதே போல இளையராஜா சார் ‘கிருஷ்ணன் வந்தான்’ படத்திற்கு இசையமைத்தபோது அப்பாவிடம் “அண்ணே நான் உங்களிடம் சம்பளம் வாங்க மாட்டேன்.

நீங்கள் நாடகம் போட்டபோது நான் ஐநூறு ரூபாய் வாங்கிக் கொண்டு இசையமைத்திருக்கிறேன் அதை மறக்க மாட்டேன்.”  என்று சொன்னார்.

ஆனாலும் முதல் படம் விற்கமுடியாமல் போனது. இதனால் குறைந்த விலைக்கு விற்க வேண்டியதாகி விட்டது. அப்புறம் ரஜினி சார் அப்பாவுக்காக ஒரு படம் பண்ணித் தருவதாகச் சொல்லியிருந்தார். ஆனால் அதற்குள் அப்பா மறைந்து விட்டார்.

அப்பா நவம்பர் 87-ல் மறைந்தார். அந்த நாளில்  எம்.ஜி.ஆரிடமிருந்து ஒரு பக்கத்துக்கு தந்தி வந்திருந்தது. அப்போது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். உடல்நிலை மோசமாக இருந்தது.

அதனால் தந்தி அனுப்பியிருந்தார். ஆனால் உடலை எடுக்க வேண்டிய நேரத்திற்கு முன்பு வீட்டுக்கு போலீஸ் வந்தது.

முதல்வர் வீட்டுக்கு வர இருக்கிறார். பாடியை மாடியிலிருந்து கீழே கொண்டு வந்து வைங்க என்றார்கள். நாங்களும் ஏற்பாடு செய்தோம்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வந்து அப்பாவுக்கு பெரிய மாலையைப் போட வந்தார். அப்போது ஒரு செக்யூரிடி ஆபீஸர் மாலையை வாங்க வந்தார். ஆனால் அதை மறுத்து அவரே மாலையைப் போட்டார்.

அப்பா இறந்த அடுத்த டிசம்பர் மாதம் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மறைந்து விட்டார். சினிமாவில் அப்பாவுக்கு வேண்டாதவர்களே கிடையாது.” என்று தேங்காய் சீனிவாசனின் நினைவுகளைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார் சிவசங்கர்

Muktha Srinivasan is an Indian film director and producer.[2]

V. Srinivasan alias Muktha Srinivasan entered the film industry in 1947, as Senior Assistant to T. R. Sundaram, by coaching artists in dialogue delivery. He worked with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in Manthiri Kumari and with major artists of the time including T. R. Mahalingam, Anjali Devi, Madhuri Devi, S. Balachandar and L. V. Prasad. He worked with Director K. Ramnoth as assistant along with K. S. Sethumathavan.

Muktha Srinivasan directed his first film, Mudhalali, in 1957 which was produced by Ratna Studios. Production was four months and three days in a period when films usually took more than a year to be completed.[3] The film was a success, despite its having had a relatively unknown cast.[citation needed]

 It won a National Award presented by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, then President of India, in the presence of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru[3] Srinivasan started producing films with his elder brother Muktha V. Ramaswamy under the name Muktha Films in 1962.[3] Ramaswamy had experience in making films and finance control as he had worked with Modern Theatres, Bell Pictures and the Narayanan Company who were producing, distributing and exhibiting films. 

During the making of Mudhalali, using the idle camera, his friend Somu directed Sampoorna Ramayanam, which too was produced by Ratna Studios. Actress Sandhya (Vedavalli), who was working on Samporrna Ramayanam, became his fiend, while he directed Mudhalali and promised him, that she would act in a film directed by him in future. 

Sandhya used to address him as Cheenu. Later Sandhya worked in the film PooJaikku Vandha Malar in 1962, directed by Muktha Srinivasan. He always preferred to have music by either the duo Vishwanatha-Ramamoorthy or by M.S.Viswanathan.

His first choice for hero in the sixities, was always Gemini Ganesan and directed Panithirai, Idhayathil Nee, Poojaikku Vandha Malar, Thenmazhai. 

The Hindi film Andaz Apna Apna made in 1994, was combination of scenes enacted by Cho Ramaswamy with Nagesh in the comedy films Thenmazhai, Bommalattam and Ninaivil Nindraval - all three directed by Mukhta Srinivasan, along-with one scene from Adimai Penn, directed by K.Shankar. 

The 4 comedy films directed by him - Thenmazhai, Ninaivil Nindraval, Bommalattam and Ayiram Poi are recongised as landmark films in Tamil Cinema. He directed actress Sandhya's daughter J.Jayalalithaa in two landmark films - Suryagandhi, Anbai Thedi and made her do guest appearance in Cinema Paithiyam.The film Suryagandhi is considered by him as the best of all the films he directed.

 Suryagndhi was digitalized and re-released in September 2016.[4]Jayalalithaa sang duets with T.M. Sounderrajan in directorial ventures of Muktha - Suryagandhi and Anbai Thedi with music composed by M.S.Vishwanathan. He wanted to direct Jayalalithaa in Paritchaikku Neramaachu, however she had become member of parliament and hence he replaced her with Sujatha.

K. Balachandar wrote the story and dialogue for the film Poojaiku Vandha Malar, produced by Muktha. He introduced Vaali as lyricist, actresses Devika, Deepa and others to the silver screen. Lyricist Vaali once quoted "Had M.S.Vishwanathan not agreed to give me the chance to write lyrics in the film, I would have never become popular. It was his tunes, which made me a household name.

Muktha Srinivasan accepted me as the lyrcist only due to M.S.Viswanathan." He brought to light Actor-Director T. S. B. K. Mouli's acting prowess in his film Sooryakanthi. Visu the dramatist became Visu the filmmaker after working in his Keezh Vaanam Sivakkum. He has received numerous awards[5] and today he is the most senior director in the Tamil film industry.[6] He also casted actress Savithri in character roles in Andharangam, Suryagandhi.

He directed Sivaji Ganesan in Nirai Kudam, Arunodhayam,Thava Pudhalvan, Anbai Thedi,Andaman Kadhali, Imayam, Keezh Vaanam Sivakkum and Iru Medhaigal. He directed Sivaji Ganesan in 11 films which were all original stories and not remakes. He directed Kamal Hasan in Andharangam and Simla Special and directed Rajnikanth in Polladhavan (1980 film).Out of his 43 directorial ventures, 29 were box office hits. In his films, Cho Ramaswamy and Manorama were casted regularly through out his career.

The film Andha Naal, in which he assisted S. Balachander, was the first film without songs that was made in Madras.[7] This became a hit.[7]

Srinivasan was one of the founders of, and served as President for, the Tamil Film Producer Council.[5] He served as President of the South Indian film chamber of commerce.[8] He was Chairman of Film City, owned by the state government of Tamil Nadu.[9] He was also Member of Award Films Committees and a Board Member of the Film Censor Board.[10]

His elder brother was Muktha Ramaswamy and his sister was Revathi. He married Prema in He has three children Muktha S. Sundar, Mukhta Ravi and Maya.

Thengai Srinivasan (21 October 1937 – 9 November 1988) was an Indian actor and comedian, who appeared in Tamil-language films in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was given the title Thengai (coconut) after his role as a coconut-seller in the play Kal Manam, staged by actor K. Kannan. Although originally a comedian, he also performed in other genres and enacted several lead and antagonistic roles.[1]

Early life[edit]

Thengai Srinivasan was born to Rajavel Mudaliar (Chennai) and Subammal (Srivaikuntam in Tuticorin district) on 21 October 1937.[2] He had two sisters. When he was aged seven years old, his family moved to Chennai. Srinivasan's father was an artist who staged several plays and it was his influence which stimulated Srinivasan's interest in an acting career.[1][3]

After school, Srinivasan joined the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and later started his theatrical career in the Railway Dramatic Club.[3][2] Srinivasan's first stage appearance was in his father's drama Galatta Kalyanam.[1] Srinivasan was also part of the drama troupe of K. Kannan and portrayed a coconut vendor in one of his plays Kal Manam. Comedian K. A. Thangavelu upon watching the drama, announced he should be called "Thengai" (coconut) Srinivasan thereafter.[3][4]

Career[edit]

Srinivasan's first feature film was the mystery thriller Oru Viral in 1965.[5] The film, which saw him playing a detective, was a financial success.[5] Srinivasan was, however, supposed to make his feature film debut in Iravum Pagalum (1965) that marked the acting debut of Jaishankar, but was dropped after distributors raised concerns about two newcomers being featured in the lead roles. He and Jaishankar nonetheless would become close friends later and Srinivasan was featured in almost 80 per cent of Jaishankar's early films.[2]

Srinivasan mostly enacted the role of a comedian or a sidekick. Notable roles in his subsequent career include that of a fake Swami and that of an idealistic industrialist in the cult comedy films Kasethan Kadavulada and Thillu Mullu, respectively.[2][3] Behindwoods cited that the former was "probably Thengai Sreenivasan's best role" and the latter "would come a close second".[6] 

In 2013, Forbes India included his performance in Thillu Mullu, along with that of Rajinikanth in the same film, in its list of the "25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian Cinema".[7] Srinivasan also played antagonistic roles; one of which was that of a blackmailing photographer in S. P. Muthuraman's Mayangukiral Oru Maadhu, which was described as "brilliant" by The Hindu.[2] 

He played the lead in Vaali's play Sri Krishna Vijayam, which was later made into a feature film named Kaliyuga Kannan. The makers originally intended to cast Sivaji Ganesan in the role, but Ganesan, being impressed by Srinivasan's performance in the play, suggested that Srinivasan may be retained for the film version. Kaliyuga Kannan went on to become a high commercial success and is considered as one of Srinivasan's most notable films.[2]

 Other films featuring Srinivasan in the lead role were Nandri Karangal, Sri Ramajayam, Porter Ponnusami and Adukku Malli, which was a box office success.[8] In 1987, Srinivasan produced the film Krishnan Vandhaan with Sivaji Ganesan in the lead. The film did not fare well and got him into deep financial trouble.[2]

Death[edit]

When Srinivasan went to Bangalore, Karnataka to attend the rituals following his aunt's death, he suffered a brain haemorrhage. Despite intensive treatment, he died at the age of 51 on 9 November 1988.[2] His body was brought to his house at Ramasamy Street in Gopalapuram, Chennai. His death was marked by tributes from film fans and industry insiders alike.[1]

Srinivasan was married to Lakshmi. The couple have two daughters, Geethalakshmi and Rajeshwari, and a son, Shivshankar.[2] Geethalakshmi's son Yogi,[9] and Shivshankar's daughter Shrutika have also appeared in a few Tamil films during the 2000s.[10]

தேங்காய் ஸ்ரீநிவாசன், சென்னையைச் சேர்ந்த இராஜவேல் முதலியார் என்பவருக்கும், தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டத்திலுள்ள திருவைகுண்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சுப்பம்மாள் என்பவருக்கும் மகனாக 1937-ம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 21-ம் நாள் பிறந்தார். தன்னுடைய தந்தையைப் போல தானும் நடிகராக வேண்டுமென்ற ஆசையுடன் அதற்கான முயற்சி செய்து வந்தார். 

அவருடைய தந்தை எழுதிய 'கலாட்டா கல்யாணம்' மேடை நாடகத்தில் அறிமுகமானார். அதற்குப்பிறகு, ரவிந்தர், கே. கண்ணன் உட்பட பல்வேறு எழுத்தாளர்களின் பல்வேறு நாடகங்களில் நடித்தார். இவர் கே. கண்ணனின் கல் மணம் நாடகத்தில், தேங்காய் வியாபாரியாக சிறப்பாக நடித்திருந்தார். அதற்காக அந்நாடகத்தைப் பார்க்க வந்திருந்த கே. ஏ. தங்கவேலு, இவரை தேங்காய் ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் என்றே அழைக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்று கூறினார்; அவ்வாறே அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.[1]

தேங்காய் ஸ்ரீநிவாசன், ஒரு விரல் திரைப்படத்தின் மூலமாக திரைத்துறையில் அறிமுகமானார். இவர் ம. கோ. இராமச்சந்திரன், சிவாஜி கணேசன், ரஜினிகாந்த், கமல்ஹாசன் உள்ளிட்ட பல முன்ணணி நடிகர்களுடன் இணைந்து பணியாற்றி உள்ளார். சுமார் 900 படங்களுக்கு மேல் நடித்துள்ள இவர், சிவாஜி கணேசன் நடித்த கிருஷ்ணன் வந்தான் என்ற திரைப்படத்தை தயாரித்தார்.[1]

தேங்காய் ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் தன்னுடைய உறவினரின் ஈமச் சடங்கிற்காக பெங்களூருவிற்குச் சென்றபோது, மூளை குருதிப்பெருக்கு காரணமாக மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார். சிகிச்சைப் பலனின்றி, 50-ம் அகவையில் 1987-ம் ஆண்டு நவம்பர் 9-ம் நாள் உயிரிழந்தார்.[

Thengai Srinivasan (21 October 1937 – 9 November 1988) was an Indian actor and comedian, who appeared in Tamil-language films in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was given the title Thengai (coconut) after his role as a coconut-seller in the play Kal Manam, staged by actor K. Kannan. Although originally a comedian, he also performed in other genres and enacted several lead and antagonistic roles.[1]

Thengai Srinivasan was born to Rajavel Mudaliar (Chennai) and Subammal (Srivaikuntam in Tuticorin district) on 21 October 1937.[2] He had two sisters. When he was aged seven years old, his family moved to Chennai. Srinivasan's father was an artist who staged several plays and it was his influence which stimulated Srinivasan's interest in an acting career.[1][3]

After school, Srinivasan joined the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and later started his theatrical career in the Railway Dramatic Club.[3][2] Srinivasan's first stage appearance was in his father's drama Galatta Kalyanam.[1] Srinivasan was also part of the drama troupe of K. Kannan and portrayed a coconut vendor in one of his plays Kal Manam. Comedian K. A. Thangavelu upon watching the drama, announced he should be called "Thengai" (coconut) Srinivasan thereafter.[3][4]

Srinivasan's first feature film was the mystery thriller Oru Viral in 1965.[5] The film, which saw him playing a detective, was a financial success.[5] Srinivasan was, however, supposed to make his feature film debut in Iravum Pagalum (1965) that marked the acting debut of Jaishankar, but was dropped after distributors raised concerns about two newcomers being featured in the lead roles. He and Jaishankar nonetheless would become close friends later and Srinivasan was featured in almost 80 per cent of Jaishankar's early films.[2]

Srinivasan mostly enacted the role of a comedian or a sidekick.
