SAINT JOHN DE BRITO , CHRISTIAN MISSIONERY PRIEST BORN 1647 MARCH 1-1693 FEBRUARY 4

SAINT  JOHN DE BRITO ,

CHRISTIAN MISSIONERY PRIEST

BORN 1647 MARCH 1-1693 FEBRUARY 4

HISTORICAL REVOLT 100 YEARS

FEBRUARY 4,1922 - FEBRUARY 4 ,2022

100years on, historians still confused about the impact of Chauri Chaura
Did the violence at Chauri Chaura betray Gandhi or did the Mahatma err in assessing the incident is a question that still haunts students of history 75 years after the event.

As many as 22 policemen were burnt alive by a rampaging mob after the police fired on a procession of satyagrahis in Chauri Chaura near Gorakhpur on February 4,1922.

In the aftermath of Chauri Chaura, the British police unleashed a reign of terror in the area and 172 satyagrahis were sentenced to death in connection with the incidents by the Gorakhpur sessions court. Finally 19 people were hanged, after their plea was rejected by the Allahabad high court.

The Chauri Chaura Smarak Samiti, an organisation of local villagers and political activists, is planning to organise various functions during the 75th anniversary of the incident.

Shahid Amin, a scholar who authored a book Chauri Chaura 1922--92, says it is unfortunate that Chauri Chaura still remains on the margin of authentic history writing. The facts about this upsurge, he says, are yet to be fully compiled and analysed.

Mahatma Gandhi was shaken by the violence of Chauri Chaura and abruptly called off the non-co-operation movement in 1922 when the movement was at its peak. Chauri Chaura, he said, was a 'divine warning' that the masses were not yet prepared for launching a non-violent struggle to gain freedom for the country.

For the Mahatma's critics, the suspension of the movement was a 'Himalayan mistake' at a crucial juncture of the freedom struggle when they felt Swaraj was only 'one inch away'.

Gandhi's article in Young India (16-2-1922), 'The crime of Chauri Chaura' had also evoked sharp reactions.

His memoirs revealed that he was somewhat confused about the eventual impact of Chauri Chaura. In March 1922, he wrote to Mahadev Desai, 'take it from me that Chauri Chaura has saved us from a conflagration and has brought Swaraj miles nearer.' He interpreted the event differently in 1930: 'if the march of nonviolence had not been interrupted by the events in Chauri Chaura, I make bold to say that we would have been today in full possession of Swaraj.'

Gandhi defended his decision to call off the non- co-operation movement while fully realising that the decision had demoralised the masses who wanted to get rid of British rule quickly. It pained the Mahatma when his critics accused him of cowardice in the face of brutal State power. As he wrote in Navjeevan in 1928, 'until this date I have felt that I have served the country by calling off the non-co-operation movement. I am confident that history will look upon it as a form of perfect satyagraha and not as an act of cowardice.'

Two days before the incident, on 2 February 1922, volunteers participating in the non-cooperation movement led by a retired soldier of the British Indian Army named Bhagwan Ahir, protested against high food prices and liquor sales at Gauri Bazaar. The demonstrators were beaten back by the local Daroga (inspector) Gupteshwar Singh and other police officers. Several of the leaders were arrested and put in the lock-up at the Chauri Chaura police station. In response to this, a protest against the police was called on 4 February, to be held at the Bazaar.[1]

On 4 February, approximately 2,000 to 2,500 protesters assembled and began marching towards the market lane at Chauri Chaura. They had gathered to picket the Gauri Bazaar Liquor Shop. Armed police were dispatched to control the situation while the protesters marched towards the Bazaar, shouting anti-British slogans. In an attempt to frighten and disperse the crowd, Gupteshwar Singh ordered his 13 local police officers to fire warning shots into the air. This only agitated the crowd who began to throw stones at the police.[2][3][4]

With the situation getting out of control, the sub-inspector Prithvi Pal ordered the police to open fire on the advancing crowd, killing three and wounding several others. Reports vary on the reason for the police retreat, with some suggesting that the constables ran out of ammunition while others claimed that the crowd's unexpectedly assertive reaction to the gunfire was the cause. In the ensuing chaos, the heavily outnumbered police fell back to the shelter of the police chowki while the angry mob advanced. Infuriated by the gunfire into their ranks, the crowd set the chowki ablaze, killing all of the Indian policemen including Singh and the constables trapped inside.[2][3][4]

The following are the names of the policemen that were killed in the incident:

Inspector Gupteshwar Singh
Sub-Inspector Prithvi Pal
Constable Bashir Khan
Constable Kapil Dev Singh
Constable Lakhai Singh
Constable Raghuvir Singh
Chaukidar Visheshwar Singh
Constable Mohammed Khan
Constable Hasan Khan
Constable Gadabaksh Khan
Constable Jama Khan
Chaukidar Manglu Chaubey
Constable Rambali Pandey
Constable Kapil Dev
Constable Indrasan Singh
Constable Ramlakhan Singh
Constable Mardana Khan
Constable Jagdev Singh
Constable Jaigai Singh
Chaukidar Wazir
Chaukidar Ghisai Ram
Chaukidar Katwaru Ram
One chaukidar (government watchman) named Jathai Ram was thrown into the burning station by the mob but he was able to survive. He had several burn injuries. When the regional Police Commissioner arrived after the incident, he ordered Jathai to be taken to hospital where he later died.

Most victims were burned to death, although several appear to have been killed by the crowd at the entrance to the chowki and their bodies thrown back into the fire. The death count is reported in the literature as either 22 or 23 policemen by different accounts, possibly because of ignoring or counting the subsequent death of Jathai Ram.[2][3][4]

Aftermath
In response to the killing of the police, the British colonial authorities declared martial law in and around Chauri Chaura. Several raids were conducted and hundreds of people were arrested.

Appalled at the outrage, Gandhi went on a five-day fast as penance for what he perceived as his culpability in the bloodshed.[3] In reflection, Gandhi felt that he had acted too hastily in encouraging people to revolt against the British colonial government without sufficiently emphasising the importance of ahimsa (non-violence) and without adequately training the people to exercise restraint in the face of attack.[5] He decided that the Indian people were ill-prepared and not yet ready to do what was needed to achieve independence. Gandhi was also arrested and sentenced to six years of imprisonment but was later released in February 1924, on grounds of his ill health.[4]

On 12 February 1922, the Indian National Congress halted the non-cooperation movement on the national level as a direct result of the Chauri Chaura tragedy.[6]

Nehru and most of the workers of the Congress, who were in prison when Gandhi took this decision, felt that this was a hasty and incorrect decision at a time when the nation was reaching the epoch of support for the Indian independence movement. A few months after this withdrawal, the colonial government arrested Gandhi and put him in Jail.[7]

Trial and conviction
A total of 225 people were brought to trial at Gorakhpur Sessions Court of Judge H. E. Holmes, on charges of "rioting and arson" in conjunction with the Chauri Chaura affair.[8] Of these, six died while in police custody, two were sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment, while 170 were sentenced to death by hanging and 47 were acquitted on 9 January 1923, following conviction in a trial which lasted eight months.[8]

A storm of protest erupted over the verdicts, which were characterised as "legalised murder" by Indian Communist leader M.N. Roy,[8] who called for a general strike of Indian workers.[9]

On 30 April 1923, The Allahabad High Court pronounced the final judgements in the case, after appeals had been considered:

The (19) people who were sentenced to hanging were Nazar Ali, Bhagwan Ahir, Lal Mohammed, Shyamsundar, Abdullah, Dudhi Singh, Kali Charan, Lauti Kumar, Mahadev Singh, Meghu Ali, Raghuvir, Ramlakhan, Ramroop, Sahdev, Rudali, Mohan, Sampat, Shyam Sundar and Sitaram.
14 people were sentenced to life imprisonment.
19 people were sentenced to 8 years' imprisonment.
57 people were sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment.
20 people were sentenced to 3 years' imprisonment.
3 people to 2 years' imprisonment.
38 people were acquitted.
The 19 defendants condemned to death were hanged between 2 and 11 July 1923.

100 years on, historians still confused about the impact of Chauri Chaura
Did the violence at Chauri Chaura betray Gandhi or did the Mahatma err in assessing the incident is a question that still haunts students of history 100 years after the event.

For the Mahatma's critics, the suspension of the movement was a 'Himalayan mistake' at a crucial juncture of the freedom struggle when they felt Swaraj was only 'one inch away'.Gandhi's article in Young India (16-2-1922), 'The crime of Chauri Chaura' had also evoked sharp reactions.

His memoirs revealed that he was somewhat confused about the eventual impact of Chauri Chaura. In March 1922, he wrote to Mahadev Desai, 'take it from me that Chauri Chaura has saved us from a conflagration and has brought Swaraj miles nearer.' He interpreted the event differently in 1930: 'if the march of nonviolence had not been interrupted by the events in Chauri Chaura, I make bold to say that we would have been today in full possession of Swaraj.' Gandhi defended his decision to call off the non- co-operation movement while fully realising that the decision had demoralised the masses who wanted to get rid of British rule quickly.

BEGINS 2004 FEBRUARY 4

JOHN D .BRITTO , GOT MURDERED 1693 FEBRUARY 4

JOHN D .BRITTO , GOT MURDERED
1693 FEBRUARY 4

Tell us a little about the shrine of Oriyur…
In Tamilnadu the São João de Britto Shrine is the oldest shrine, but since it is situated in a remote area, the attention is not given properly, so far. For the past three to four years we have been giving some attention, there is a lot of improvement, in terms of the pilgrimages and the restoration and renovation of the churches. Now the pilgrims come and say Father, the shrine is good now, it is clean now, there is a spiritual atmosphere. They donate what they have, these contributions are also increasing, sharing their resources.

Three hundred years ago St. John de Brito was beheaded here. People started coming and venerating him. Not only Catholics, but other religious groups, particularly Hindus and Muslims. Among the Christians there are also other sects, people come because they want to pay respects to the man who introduced Christ, they say they want to see their forefather and get blessings from him.

People have started coming, I am struggling to get the government to increase the facilities. The road is good now, a bank has come, some infrastructures have improved. The Tamilnadu government has given money for dormitories for the pilgrims, toilet facilities, water purification machine and the fourth is solar energy. Because of our tireless effort things are progressing and the spiritual atmosphere is improving.

The shrine is run by the Jesuits?
Yes, but it is under the diocese of Sivangagai, but we cooperate in the development.

How well known is Saint John in India?

It’s a pity, but many Indian Christians do not know John de Brito, but their forefathers, those who know, tell their grand-children about them. But I make an effort, I go to different parishes every week and I speak about him, and people then get to know him and come to the shrine. There are three very important saints in the Indian Catholic Church. One is St. Thomas, the other is St. Francis Xavier, and then there is St. John de Brito. Everybody knows the first two, but not so many know the third. But the consciousness is increasing.

This year, one of the purposes of my visit is that we are making a short film about John de Brito. It will start in Lisbon, his birth place, his baptism place, his house, where he studied in Coimbra, then his landing in Goa and his history in India. The CD will be distributed in Portugal as well. It will be a short film, later we might make a bigger one. We have an Indian cast, in Tamilnadu many villages already have plays about St. John de Brito, and they are ready to participate.

What would you highlight from St. John’s legacy in India?
He didn’t live a long time. He died at the age of 46. By then he had spent 20 years in India and had made a great impact on the Indian Catholic Church. In 20 years he converted 30 thousand people. At that time there were no facilities, no roads, buses, he went on foot. He went around all of Tamilnadu on foot, he crossed forests, rivers, he had a very tough time.

But he was so happy to serve the people, such an enthusiastic personality.

When you look at his life, at the beginning he was very sick, physically. His mother prayed to St. Francis Xavier, and he was saved. He travelled in the see for 11 months, many people died but he survived. Then in India he had bad facilities, but he had strong willpower, and, especially, he had a very strong faith in Christ.

During the last period of his life the king tortured him. He went to jail, then he was hung upside down in a well, then he was beaten up. All this he bore with happiness and joy. He almost reflected Christ. Even at the last moment, he blessed the man who came to behead him, telling him to do his duty with a smile on his face.

So that is a lesson we hope to learn, when we have suffering, we accept it with a joyful note. That is the message Christ has given, John de Brito followed. That is why he is alive in the shrine, with happiness, with Joy. That is why in Tamil he is called Arul Anandar, which means Grace with Joy.

People come to the shrine with problems, but they meet him and their problems are solved, because he was pouring abundant grace on the people who are suffering.

Are there many documented cases of miracles?
Yes, many, and they will be shown in the film as well.

What plans do you have for the future of the shrine?
We are establishing a missionary park, to mark the year of faith. In that park we have already finished one structure, a meditation hall, where 700 people can sit and meditate. Around it we are building a structure, where we are bringing many missionary figures. It is because of missionaries that the church has grown. For example, we have biblical missionaries. Moses, Abraham, the prophets. From the New Testament, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Saint Peter, Saint Thomas, Saint Paul, all missionaries. IN the early Christian time Saint Ambrose. Then in the medieval time, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Ignatius, Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Anthony. Later St. Pio, Sister Theresa, St. John Paul II. They will all be in our missionary park. It is going to be faith formation for children and youth, a unique project of our shrine. I feel that when it is finished people will come to see our particular area; we are planning a 30 minute sound and light programme for the evening. People are really taken up by it.

The Cologne Archdiocese was supporting it and I think they will continue to support it.

I am going to introduce the shrine to the church in Goa, maybe after preparing more facilities for lodging. Soon it will be an international shrine, but it takes time, we have to struggle and suffer, as St. John de Brito struggled and suffered.

We have heard some troubling news from India in terms of religious freedom… what is the situation for Christians at the moment in general, and also in the area you live in?
In my place there is no problem. For example South India is safer than North India. It is a question of political gain, the politicians make use of religion to divide the people and make them fight. But among the people there is a peaceful coexistence, but they instigate. Now there are going to be elections and the Hindu fundamentalists are instigating the people. But in my place there is no violence, the number of Hindu fundamentalists is much smaller.

But the John de Brito shrine is a shrine of reconciliation; it is a shrine of interreligious atmosphere, a shrine of peace. For example during the festival all the people come and cooperate and work for the feast.

O santuário de Oriyur
Has Christianity been growing in your region?
Yes.

Some of the accusations against the Christians are that they try to convert people from lower castes…
They come on their own, they join on their own, it is growing, but they love Christ, they love the Church, they love the church activities, education, health care, social work. Christianity is growing in India, it’s not dying, its growing, stronger and stronger. The number of people participating in the church is high. In my parish in Chennai, there are 12 masses on Sunday and the church is always packed!

Were you born into a Christian family?
Yes. Maybe three or four generations. My forefathers were converted by John de Brito, then they went to Myanmar. My grandfather went there, my father was there and I was born in Myanmar and was there until the age of 10. Then I came back to India, then I joined the Jesuit order, and now I have a great chance to develop the John de Brito shrine, it’s a blessing for me. Nobody got this opportunity, but I did. It’s a blessing!
