DOG - REAL FACTS

DOG - REAL FACTS

====================

Only around 200 tourists make it to Nauru each year

 Oliver Smith, digital travel editor

It’s exactly 50 years since Nauru gained independence. Settled by Micronesians and Polynesians at least 3,000 years ago, the remote Pacific island nation was annexed by Germany in 1888, ruled by the UK, Australia and New Zealand under a League of Nations mandate after the First World War, captured by the Japanese in 1942, then governed (again by the UK, Australia and New Zealand) under a United Nations agreement until 1966. Full independence came two years later.

To celebrate the anniversary, here are a few fascinating facts about this little-known land.

1. The Queen has been there – but not many others have

As a member of the Commonwealth, Naura was a logical stop on the Queen’s 1982 tour of the South Pacific. Which puts HRH in a rather exclusive club. Only around 200 tourists make it to Nauru each year, which means perhaps 15,000 living souls - or 0.0002% of the global population - have been there.

For ultimate globetrotting bragging rights, head first to Brisbane and then board the daily four-and-a-half-hour flight to the island with Nauru Airlines. You’ll need a visa.

There are two hotels: Menen and OD-N-Aiwo.

2. It’s the world’s smallest island nation

Measuring just eight square miles, Nauru is larger than just two other countries: the Vatican City and Monaco. There really isn’t room for much. Nauru has no protected areas, no World Heritage Sites, no rivers, and just 30km of roads.

3. But is the fattest country on Earth

According to the CIA's World Factbook, 71.1 per cent of its 10,000 residents are obese. Only American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States, can top it, making Nauru the most overweight sovereign state on the planet.

A slew of other South Pacific nations follow, including Tonga, Samoa, Palau and Kiribati. In fact, Kuwait is the only country outside the region to feature in the top 10. There is a clear obesity problem in the South Pacific, with the weight of adults increasing at four times the global average. Some have claimed the islanders are genetically predisposed to putting on weight, while a 2014 report suggested that colonial settlers, who taught them Western ways of eating - frying fish, for example, rather than eating it raw - are to blame.

Mapped: the world according to obesity

4. With its smallest GDP

The GDP of Nauru is a paltry $102m (£72m). Which wouldn’t even buy Manchester City two new defenders.

5. But it does have a railway

A 3.9km stretch of narrow gauge railway was built in 1907 for the transport of mined phosphate, the lynchpin of the island’s economy for decades.

6. It was once the world’s richest country

So rich were Nauru’s phosphate reserves that for a brief period in the Sixties it had the highest per capita GDP in the world. Alas, those reserves have now been largely exhausted.

7. It was a pleasant place

The first Westerner to visit Nauru was the British whaler John Fearn, who dropped anchor there in 1798. He was clearly impressed, calling it “Pleasant Island”. The island is ringed by coral reef, which prevents it from having a port but makes it a fair bet for diving and snorkelling (the impact of phosphate mining, however, has wiped out much of the marine life).

8. But it suffered in recent years – and has a very dark side

As Jonathan Liew, writing for The Telegraph, explained in 2016: "By the turn of the century, Nauru was virtually bankrupt. The entire centre of the island had been ravaged by strip mining and was virtually unusable. Unemployment was at 90 per cent. Corruption and money-laundering festered. Climate change was wrecking its fishing industry. And so when the Australian government offered it a sackful of cash in 2001 to host an offshore asylum processing centre [where atrocities are allegedly rife], it had no choice but to accept. So until 2008, and again since 2012, Nauru has perhaps become best known as an auxiliary piece in Australia’s toxic immigration debate."

Protesters call for the closure of an asylum processing centre on Nauru

In 2015 it banned Facebook on the pretence of protecting residents from pornography, but really - many claimed - to stifle political dissent. The ban was lifted this week.

And it took until 2016 for Nauru to ditch capital punishment. A further 58 countries still have it.

9. Most people on the island speak English

Given its close ties with Australia, New Zealand and the UK, it will come as no surprise to learn that Nauru is one of 45 countries where at least half of the population speak English (according to David Crystal's book English as a Global Language). However, the official language is Nauruan, a distinct Pacific island language that is spoken in most homes.

Mapped: the world according to English speakers

10. There’s no army

Nauru is one of 16 countries without an army. Australia is also responsible for keeping Nauru safe and sound, although the island does have a police force.

Weightlifting is a big deal

11. They love Aussie rules

It’s the national sport, along with weightlifting (its 10 Commonwealth Games golds put it ahead of Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong), while Rugby Sevens is growing in popularity.

Mary Boleyn: Biography, Portrait, Facts & Information

Mary Boleyn: Biography, Portrait, Facts & Information

Mary Boleyn was the sister of King Henry VIII’s second wife, the infamous Anne Boleyn. But she was also the king’s mistress before her sister’s ascendancy. She may also have given birth to his son.

Information about the life of Mary Boleyn is sketchy at best. Before her sister’s ascendancy, Mary was the most famous member of her family, a dubious honor since it was based upon her adulterous affair with King Henry VIII. There has been great debate over the exact year of her birth, with many researchers unable to agree on which Boleyn sister was older. Some speculate Anne was born in 1501 or 1502; others place it at 1507. The most recent scholarship supports 1507 as the year of Anne’s birth. Mary was born a year later, in 1508. Their only surviving sibling was an older brother George, born in 1503.

Mary was born at Hever Castle, the family seat. She was named after Princess Mary Tudor, the youngest child of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Her family was loyal to the Tudor dynasty but had Yorkist connections. Her mother was Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Thomas, earl of Surrey. His father, the 1st duke of Norfolk, had died fighting for Richard III against Henry VII. Mary’s father, Thomas Boleyn, could trace his ancestry only to the 13th century. His family was originally from Norfolk where they lived as tenant farmers. In 1457, a Sir Geoffrey Boleyn was serving as Lord Mayor of London. He wed Anne, heiress of Lord Hoo and Hastings, and – through her – acquired Hever Castle in Kent and Blickling Hall in Norfolk. His son became a knight under Richard III and a baron under Henry VII. He married a great heiress as well; she was Margaret, daughter of Thomas Butler, 7th earl of Ormond. He was incredibly wealthy and bequeathed Margaret 36 manors. Their eldest child was Thomas Boleyn, Mary’s father. Thomas had married Elizabeth Howard by 1501. Their three surviving children were born within the next 10 years.

In 1512, Thomas was one of three envoys assigned to the regent of Netherlands court. His skill in speaking French and his family connections secured the appointment. Once there, he was a great success with the regent, Margaret, archduchess of Austria. He used this friendship to secure a prestigious appointment for his eldest daughter, Anne; she was to reside with the regent’s wards, sharing their royal education. This is the primary evidence that Anne was the elder sister. In such cases, the elder sister would receive the opportunity first.

However, Mary was married before Anne – an unusual occurrence and one which led many to believe Mary was older. However, it is completely plausible that Anne was not married first because she was still in Europe, gaining a royal education and hoping to wed a foreign nobleman. Mary, on the other hand, wed a man named William Carey, a gentleman of the royal privy chamber on 4 February 1520. Though he was not a titled lord, his duties meant he had intimate contact with the king on a daily basis. He would be a valuable connection for the Boleyns. Henry used his attendants, with whom he spent his leisure hours, to carry out government work. Carey was 24 years old and Mary not quite twelve, young even for 16th century marriage. The consummation of the marriage was probably delayed for a few years.

Mary’s wedding was held a few weeks before her father returned from a mission abroad. This indicates that Thomas Boleyn had planned the marriage well in advance. The king gave the newlyweds a cash present – 6s.8d.; this was undoubtedly welcome since William Carey was a younger son and lacked money and lands. Henry’s favor (and, more particularly, Mary’s affair with Henry) helped in this respect – before his death in 1528, William had received two keeperships, a stewardship, an annuity, and manors in two counties. As to William’s ancestry, he could trace his descent from Edward III; his mother was a cousin of Margaret Beaufort, Henry VII’s mother. His aunt Catherine Spencer was married to Henry, fifth earl of Northumberland.

As William’s wife, Mary had lodgings at court, information about royal policies, and the great opportunity to participate in all court events. Their first child, Catherine, was born about 1524 when Mary was just sixteen. Meanwhile, her family continued its ascendancy during these years. Personally, she and her sister Anne were two of eight women who participated in a celebration at York Place, Cardinal Wolsey’s home. Anne played Perseverance and Mary was Kindness; they were clothed in white satin with bejeweled headdresses. This was in 1522; Mary was just fourteen. By the time she was seventeen, Mary was a first-time mother and Henry VIII’s mistress. There is much circumstantial evidence to support this:

In 1527, Henry was planning to marry Anne Boleyn. He sought and received a papal dispensation to marry the sister of a woman with whom he had engaged in illicit/unlawful intercourse. Anne had only one sister – Mary.
Reginald Pole reported the following – in 1528, a member of Parliament insulted the king’s morals by accusing Henry of sleeping with Anne’s mother and sister. Undoubtedly flustered, the king replied: “Never with her mother.”
the affair was known of in diplomatic circles – in 1532, Francis I of France met Mary face-to-face when she accompanied Henry and Anne to Calais. He mentioned her infamous behavior with her sister’s spouse before the marriage to Anne.
The affair was brief, ending in mid-1525 (probably July.) On 4 March 1526, Mary gave birth to a son, called Henry. He was widely assumed to be the king’s son. He physically resembled the king, a fact often remarked upon. In 1535, for example, a man called ‘young Master Carey’ the king’s son.

Perhaps more telling, Henry granted the Careys actual manors and estates during the affair and immediately before the child’s birth. Before, the Careys had been granted rather minor offices. (You may recall that Henry publicly acknowledged another illegitimate son, born in 1519. This boy was called Henry Fitzroy – the surname traditionally given to royal bastards – and was ennobled, given the title duke of Richmond. If Henry Carey was also his son, why didn’t Henry do the same for him? The answer lies in his determination to divorce Katharine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, the child’s aunt. It is likely that even Henry VIII would have been too embarrassed to recognize his bastard son by his fiancee’s younger sister.) Henry Carey was eventually ennobled as Lord Hunsdon by Elizabeth I, the queen who may have been his half-sister and was undoubtedly his cousin. Though he served her ably, Elizabeth only offered Hunsdon a title upon his deathbed. To this dubious honor, the old man aptly replied that if the queen hadn’t thought him worth it while he was in health, he would not accept it while ill.

Mary Boleyn was referenced in Henry’s love letters to Anne in 1528, the year her husband died. William had asked Mary to seek her sister’s influence with the king; his elder sister, Eleanor, wanted the position of abbess at St Edith’s Nunnery. The nuns wanted their prioress elevated to the position instead. Anne asked the king to intervene. In the end, Eleanor’s dubious moral destroyed her chances. But the episode demonstrates Anne’s willingness to help Mary; also, Mary clearly expected to benefit from her sister’s closeness to the king.

William Carey died on 23 June 1528 and Henry VIII promptly granted Anne Boleyn the wardship of her nephew (and possibly his son), two-year-old Henry Carey. In another letter to Anne, Henry remarked upon Mary’s easy virtue. He and Anne were concerned that, after William’s death, Mary’s behavior would degenerate; in other words, she would be an embarrassment to the king and his intended wife. In November 1530, Henry gave Anne 20 pds to redeem a jewel from Mary; it was probably a gambling debt. Two years later, Mary was one of thirty ladies who accompanied Henry and Anne on a visit to France (colorfully known to history as ‘The Field of the Cloth of Gold’.) They stayed in Calais in late October, attending various events with Francis I; ostensibly, they were celebrating a new peace agreement. But it was also a chance to present Anne to a foreign king. When Henry wed Anne in 1533, Mary became a lady-in-waiting to her sister. It was only in 1534 that she and Anne had a serious conflict.

In 1534, Mary secretly married William Stafford. He was the younger son of Humphrey Stafford of Blatherwick in Northampton. This marriage was a disaster for her, excepting her personal happiness. Mary undoubtedly loved Stafford, a soldier she had met at Calais (he had been part of Henry VIII’s retinue.) But her relatives – all newly ennobled and very self-conscious about their status – were outraged. He was a commoner, not fit for the queen’s sister. Accordingly, Mary and her new husband were banished from court. (It is quite possible that her relatives planned to wed Mary to a nobleman, further cementing their rise to prominence; instead, her marriage was a step backwards socially.) In late 1534, while her father and brother received numerous grants, titles, and other gifts, Mary was reduced to begging Thomas Cromwell for assistance. Would he speak to Henry on her behalf? Mary hoped Henry would persuade Anne to forgive her but her former lover was less than helpful. So Mary asked Cromwell to speak to her father, her uncle, and her brother.

Meanwhile, her son was still living with his aunt, Queen Anne. He was being tutored by the great French poet, Nicholas Bourbon, clearly benefiting from the wardship. His mother’s life between 1534 and her sister’s execution in 1536 is difficult to trace. She seems to have resided at Rochford in Essex from the time of her disgrace to her death on 19 July 1543. When her sister fell into disfavor and Henry sought a divorce, his earlier affair with Mary was mentioned. Perhaps this would justify an annulment, even as Katharine of Aragon’s marriage to his brother had? But no one seriously considered this (after all, there had been a papal dispensation) and it was more expedient to press other charges. Mary did not visit her sister when Anne was imprisoned in the Tower. Nor did she visit their brother George, also condemned to death. There is no evidence that she wrote to them. Like their uncle, the duke of Norfolk, she may have thought it wise to avoid association with her disgraced relatives.

Mary lived to see her children gain some royal favor. Her teenage daughter Catherine (born 1524) was appointed a maid of honor to Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII’s fourth wife. Sometime in 1540, Catherine made a good match, marrying Sir Francis Knollys, a popular member of Henry VIII’s household. Catherine also became one of her cousin Elizabeth Tudor’s closest friends. Her daughter, Lettice Knollys, would later marry Elizabeth’s great love, Robert Dudley; her son, the earl of Essex, would also be one of Elizabeth’s favorites (though eventually executed for treason.) Henry Carey, whose paternity was the subject of such speculation, would be ennobled as Lord Hunsdon in Elizabeth’s reign. Elizabeth was kind to her Boleyn relatives, especially Mary’s children. Twenty-two years after Anne Boleyn’s execution, a Boleyn was sole ruler of England. It was a triumph few could have predicted.

Some other stuff about Mary Boleyn that I’ve found:

Mary was considered more conventionally beautiful than Anne but lacked her sister’s style and wit.
As a child, Mary was taught French by Mademoiselle Semmonet; she also studied music (practicing on the lute, harp, viol, and virginals.)
Mary also spent time in Archduchess Margaret’s service; she was removed in 1518/19 by her father and placed in Katharine of Aragon’s service.
Anne and George Boleyn were very close and reportedly had little use for their sister, Mary. (This was reported by several foreign ambassadors.)
Note: I have read that Mary Boleyn accompanied Princess Mary Tudor to France, as a lady-in-waiting. However, the trip occurred in 1515; Mary would have been just 7 years old – so the assertion seems unlikely.

So the following questions remain:

did she accompany Mary to France?
did she use her influence with Mary Tudor to get Anne a position as lady-in-waiting to Katharine of Aragon (thus allowing Henry VIII and Anne to meet?) This has been mentioned in several books but, as I stated, it would mean Mary was a lady-in-waiting at the age of seven.
I have used the spelling ‘Boleyn’ instead of ‘Bullen’ for one simple reason – it is how the family chose to spell it when they first rose to prominence. Certainly they thought ‘Boleyn’ was more elegant – I’ll stay mum on that issue, but since most history texts also use ‘Boleyn’, it remains less confusing than switching between two surnames.

BRA ,THE INTERESTING FACTS

BRA ,THE INTERESTING FACTS

Fascinating Facts about the Ottoman Harem

10 Fascinating Facts about
the Ottoman Harem

Whenever we hear the word harem, we tend to imagine a place full of scantily clad women whose only role is to be the sexual plaything of an Ottoman Sultan in his own personal in-house brothel.

This myth lived on in people’s imagination during the 18th and 19th century as well as in many films and books. However, what went on in an Ottoman Harem was more than just sex, it was a complex place where strict a hierarchy was adhered to and where plotting for power and influence was sometimes necessary to survive.

1. Residents of the Harem

All Ottoman palaces had a harem and Topkapi Palace in Constantinople, modern day Istanbul, was the main residence of Ottoman Sultans from 1465 to 1856. The Sultan’s Imperial Harem occupied one of the sections of his private apartment and traditionally, apart from the eunuchs, men who did not belong to the family were strictly forbidden from entering the harem.

This institution constituted the private and prohibited space of the Ottoman dynasty and played an important social function within the Ottoman court and demonstrated considerable political authority in Ottoman affairs. It was home to the Sultan’s mother (Valide Sultan), the concubines and wives of the Sultan, the rest of his family including sisters, brothers, children, their servants as well as the Black Eunuchs who were the protectors of the harem. The size of Topkapi Harem is a testament to the fact that they required a large number of women attendants to serve the residents and a corps of eunuchs to oversee it.

2. The Sultan

The harem is very symbolic of an Ottoman Sultan and the number of concubines he kept in his harem was a sign of his wealth, power and also his sexual appetite. The sultan was also the only person who could freely enter and leave the harem. The introduction of the harem into Ottoman culture began with the adoption of Islam, thus bringing an Arabic tradition together with a religion. This tradition of a sultan’s harem continued until 1923 when the Republic of Turkey was established.

Although the occupants of the harem were predominately slaves, those women who were taken as wives were free women. In addition, each sultan was able to acquire concubines according to his personal taste and preference; Sultan Ibrahim I, who died in 1648, had a passion for women with a full figure and introduced mostly obese women to Harem. He was also known as the “Crazy One” as he once had his entire harem of 280 women thrown into the Bosphorus in weighted sacks. Also, the highest honor that a Sultan could show a guest was to present them an odalisque (lowly harem maid) that he had not slept with.

3. Women’s hierarchy in the Harem

Within an Ottoman Harem, it was a highly structured society with leadership and subordinate roles for its occupants. The highest position was taken up by Valide Sultan (Sultan’s mother), then came Kadin Efendi (first wife), of which under Islam a man could have a maximum of 4 wives, followed by Kadins (wife of the Sultan). Usually, the position of Kadin Efendi was acquired as a result of being the first woman to bestow on the Sultan a son. The position of the other Kadins usually depended on the order in which they bore the sultan sons.

Due to the patriarchal nature of Ottoman Society women that gave birth to girls were the lowest in the ranking of Kadins, even though they still held a relatively high position in the harem. After the Kadins came the Ikbals, (favorite) who were women the sultan liked for other reasons apart from sex; together they would discuss art, music or politics or possibly the sultan adored her singing talent.

Next in the hierarchy came the Gediks (maids in waiting), who were girls the sultan took a fancy to but did not sleep with and usually became personal servants to the sultan. At the bottom of rung were slave girls, called Odalisques (virgins) who were there to carry out the more menial tasks required in the daily running of the harem.

4. Eunuchs

If you ever thought being a guard in a harem would have been a good job, think again! The most important prerequisite to being an Ottoman harem guard was castration, which was deemed necessary in order to ensure that the Sultan’s wives and concubines were not tampered with sexually by anybody else but them, thereby guaranteeing the lineage of the Sultan.

During Ottoman times there were anywhere between 300 and 900 eunuchs at any one time who were controlled by the Chief White Eunuch. These eunuchs were used to manage the sultan’s inner service involving the bureaucracy of the palace. However, the job of guarding the harem came down to the black eunuchs, some of whom were able to attain relatively high standing in the hierarchy of the state and with it considerable power; the Chief Black Eunuch, generally being considered the 3rd most powerful person, only overshadowed by the Grand Vizier and the Sultan.

These slaves were either captured during a war or were purchased from outside of the empire, usually from the Balkans, Ethiopia, and Sudan. In general, black eunuchs were called Sandali, meaning, clean-shaven, whereby their genitalia was removed completely so they were preferred for working in the harem in close proximity to the concubines. The white eunuchs, however, usually kept part of their penis or testicles and were involved more with secretarial jobs within the harem and palace.

5. Valide Sultan (Sultan’s mother)

Just as the Sultan ruled the empire, Valide Sultan ruled over her domain in the harem. The imperial harem contained thousands of individuals and for a Valide Sultan, who herself used to be a wife or concubine of the Sultan’s father it was like her own mini empire. Like the Sultan she needed assistants while governing, she had ministers, all of whom were female, that formed her cabinet; a chief minister, chief treasurer, secretary of state as well as an enormous staff of overseers and managers to help her to maintain order and to keep the harem running smoothly.

Amongst her other duties, she was also responsible for selecting wives and sexual partners for her son and also training them in how to serve the sultan to the best of their abilities. As the most senior woman she controlled all the concubines in the harem and non-could leave the confines without her explicit permission. Her powers even extended to matters of life and death over the concubines under her control with eunuchs reporting directly to her. Sometimes her power and influence extended beyond the harem as often the Sultans came to the throne at such a young age that their mothers had to run the empire with them.

6. Concubines’ countries of origin

As slavery is forbidden in Islam a Sultan could not take a Turk or an Arab Muslim woman as a concubine. For this reason, many harem women were Caucasians, Georgians, and Abkhazians. They were usually bought from slave markets after being kidnapped or else sold by impoverished parents. Many Georgian and Caucasian families encouraged their daughters to become concubines through slavery as the life of these female servants in the harem was deemed far better than living an impoverished life elsewhere in the empire working in the fields.

These beautiful and intelligent girls were captured, bought or recruited in order to perpetuate the Ottoman Dynasty. All slaves that entered the harem were termed odalisques or " women of the court" - general servants in the harem. The girls came to the harem at a tender age and were brought up in the discipline of the court where they could rise depending on their abilities.

7. Role of the Concubine
Traditionally, the main purpose of a sultan’s wives and concubines was to produce a son in order to carry on his lineage. The emphasis was on the patriarchal nature of power that was hereditary only through sons. For this reason, every female slave entering the palace dreamt of being noticed by the Sultan, as the Sultan was the main authority and the deciding factor in the fate of the women in the Harem. Most of the concubines were slaves of Christian origin and were brought up according to the discipline of the palace and were promoted according to their capabilities.

Wives, unlike concubines, had deep-rooted interests in family affairs. This was often perceived as an opportunity for them to be disloyal to their husband. Consequently, concubines were often preferred over them in regards to having children.

From today's perspective, it is hard to imagine but a lot of women wanted to be in the harem because it meant economic safety and security. Even though most concubines within harems had no significant authority or power, the ones that did a good job of pleasing their Sultan advanced through the ranks to make the best possible lives for themselves, considering the circumstances.

8. Sections within the Harem

Although harems are considered a sultan’s in-house brothel in the minds of westerners it was, in fact, an area of the household designated for Muslim women where they can relax in privacy, without being seen by outsiders. Harem stems from the Arabic word meaning “the place of the women”.

The Harem in Topkapi Palace had over 300 rooms, 9 baths, 2 mosques, 1 hospital and 1 laundry. Because the women in the harem came from many different areas of the Ottoman Empire with differing cultures, the apartments of the harem were designed and furnished to help them feel comfortable and satisfied with their position in life. If the women were happy and contented then they would be better prepared and ready should the Sultan take a liking to them.

The Harem consisted of a series of buildings connected via hallways and courtyards. Depending on where the individual was within the hierarchy of the Harem, every concubine, wife, servant or Black Eunuch had their own designated living space clustered around a courtyard. The Sultan’s concubines mainly lived in halls beneath the apartments of the sultan’s wives (Kadins) and the sultan’s mother (Valide Sultan) or in separate chambers within the harem complex.

9. Education and training for Concubines

Beautiful and talented female slaves that entered the harem were given an education and training, which would help them in their role as a concubine and possible wife of the sultan. They were tutored in reciting poetry and dancing, taught how to sing and play musical instruments as well educated in the finer points of the art of erotica.

Only the most beautiful, intelligent and gifted girls were considered suitable for the sultan. Many women living in the harem never even got to see him as their life revolved around daily chores as one of the many maids in the harem.

On the whole, women entering a harem were provided with an education roughly on par with that provided to members of the Ottoman political elite, with whom they would be married off to once they had completed their education. Consequently, only a small fraction of the women in the harem actually engaged in a sexual relationship with the sultan.

10. Murder and intrigue
The Ottoman Harem was not just based around sex and luxury but was in fact a power center of the Ottoman Empire. As with all places surrounded by such power, it was a snake pit where intrigue, poisoning, strangling and all manner of dirty tricks were part of life within those walls.

Personal aspirations sparked conspiracies, gossip and murder within the Harem and many of these women, in order to rise up in the hierarchy would also conspire with the princesses who were married mostly to the grand vizier or other high government officials. Those men knew better than to go against their wives' wishes, understanding all too well how dangerous and possibly deadly harem gossip could be. They would even go as far as to bribe servants or eunuchs to murder their rival or their children.
