Amy Jackson is a British actress and model who predominantly appears in Indian films.[2][3] She began her modelling career at the age of 16, and went on to win the (2009) Miss Teen World competition. Subsequently, director A. L. Vijay cast her as the leading lady of the Tamil language period-drama Madrasapattinam (2010). Jackson continues to act in Indian films of all languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. She is currently the brand ambassador of Lipsy London which is a women’s clothing line established in London in 1988.

Jackson was born in Isle of Man to British Christian parents, Alan and Marguerita Jackson.[4] She has an elder sister, Alicia. The family returned to their parents' home in Woolton, Liverpool, two years after Amy's birth so that her father, who works as a producer for BBC Radio Merseyside, could continue his media career.

Jackson attended St Edward's College, where she studied English Literature, Philosophy and Ethics.[5][6][7]

2008–2010: Modelling career[edit source]
After winning the Miss Teen Liverpool and Miss Teen Great Britain pageants, Amy won the title of Miss Teen World in 2009.[8] She won eighteen prizes, including a modelling contract in the US on a $50,000 scholarship.[9] Soon after, she won Miss Liverpool in 2010. She competed at Miss England in 2010 and was crowned the runner-up to Jessica Linley.[10]

In 2009, Jackson started her modeling career with the Northern-based modeling agency, Boss Model Management, and then went on to sign with her London agency.[11][12]

2010–2014: Acting career[edit source]

In 2010, Indian film producers spotted Jackson on the Miss Teen World website and invited her to audition for the Tamil period-drama film Madrasapattinam (2010). Despite having no previous acting experience, she was cast as the female lead, opposite Arya. The film, set against the backdrop of 1947 India, tells the story of a British Governor’s daughter who falls in love with a village boy. Jackson admitted that it was very difficult to learn the Tamil dialogues. The film released in July 2010 and was acclaimed by critics, and performed well at the box office.[13] After the film was eventually released on 9 July 2010, it was a critical and commercial success, with Jackson gaining praise for her performance. Sify wrote, "It is an out and out Amy Jackson show. She is simply amazing to deliver lines in Tamil, and is one good reason to see the film".[14] Behindwoods wrote, "The one who walks away with the top honours is Amy Jackson for a beautiful portrayal of a lady torn between her love and the mighty empire. She looks absolutely beautiful, emotes well through her expressive eyes and is able to earn the sympathy of the audiences during tough times".[15] Rediff wrote, "Amy Jackson is almost perfect as the wide-eyed young girl who is seeing India for the first time, fascinated by its culture".[16] She received a nomination for the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress for her role in the film.

In 2011, she was signed by Gautham Menon to play the female lead, opposite Prateik Babbar, in Ekk Deewana Tha (2012), the Hindi remake of the 2010 hit romantic drama film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya. She essayed the role played by Trisha in the original, Jessie Thekekuttu, a Malayali Nasrani Christian who falls in love with a Hindu boy, but is prevented from pursuing the romance by her father.[17][18] The film released in February 2012. Jackson received praise for her performance and chemistry with Babbar, with BehindWoods stating that "she has done wonders," and the Times of India saying that "she never disappoints."[19]

In September 2012, Jackson made her return to Tamil cinema with a supporting role in Thaandavam (2012), starring opposite Vikram and Anushka Shetty. She was signed for the film in 2011 and shooting took place in India and London, allowing Jackson to return and see her family and friends. It was her second collaboration with director A L Vijay, after Madrasapattinam (2010). She played the role of Sarah Vinayagam, a British-born Indian girl who wins the Miss London title. She reportedly dubbed her own dialogues in Tamil.[20] She received her first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress - Tamil at the 60th Filmfare Awards South ceremony.[21]

She made her debut in Telugu cinema with the Vamsi Paidipally's Yevadu (2014) alongside Ram Charan and Shruti Haasan, playing the role of Shruti.[22] The film's release date was repeatedly reset, and released on 12 January 2014.

2015–2016[edit source]
Jackson next starred as super model Diya in Shankar's romantic thriller film I (2015), the biggest project in her career.[23] The making of the film, one of the most costly Indian films to date,[24] took over two and a half years, with a major part of the film being shot in China.[25] The film was released on 14 January 2015 and received a mixed critical response, although Jackson's performance received favorable reviews.[26][27] Deccan Chronicle wrote that she was "simply superb. She is another highlight of the film and has given a mature performance",[28] while Sify noted that she was "the biggest surprise packet in the film" and "perfect eye candy".[29] Consequently, she was ranked #1 in The Times of India, Chennai Edition list of the most desirable women in 2014.[30]

After I (2015), Jackson signed on to Prabhu Deva's Singh Is Bling (2015), opposite Akshay Kumar.[31][32] She had signed on to be part of Venkat Prabhu's supernatural thriller Masss (2015), but opted out of it later when the script and her character were changed.[33] Instead, she signed on to Velraj's Thanga Magan (2015), a Tamil film.

Soon after, Jackson starred in Thirukumaran's Gethu (2016), portraying an Anglo-Indian girl for which she won positive reviews, .[34] She has been reportedly shooting for a "gritty BBC drama series", which she declined to further elaborate on.[25] She then portrayed the lead female role in Atlee's Theri (2016), featuring alongside Vijay where she portrayed the role of a Malayali teacher. Her performance received positive reviews and her role as a teacher was well appreciated. Upon release, the film went on to become one of the most profitable Tamil films of all time.[35]

2017–present[edit source]

On 25 September 2017, it was announced that Jackson was cast in her first Hollywood role as Imra Ardeen aka Saturn Girl in The CW's superhero drama series Supergirl (2017). The character will make a first appearance in the third season.[36] The series, based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros Television.

Jackson can next be seen in Shankar's much anticipated film 2.0 (2018) releasing April 2018 alongside Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, as well as in Prem's Kannada film The Villain (2018) alongside Shiva Rajkumar and Sudeep.

Amy Jackson is a Christian.[4][37] She made special posts on her social media profiles about starting her observance of Lent on its first day, Ash Wednesday.[38][39]

As of 2012, Jackson lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra.[40][41] She has a pet cat named Alfie, with whom she posed in a PETA ad campaign promoting the adoption of animals from shelters.[42] In addition to her work with PETA, [YES!!]Jackson supports charities such as St Jude's hospital in Mumbai and 'Girl Child' education in India.[43] She serves as a brand ambassador for Yardley of London and Ponds Beauty.[44]

In 2012, Jackson was in a relationship with Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar,[45][46] Later in 2012, the relationship ended.[47] In 2013, she was dating boxer Joe Selkirk. On 8 December 2013, she was reportedly assaulted by Joe Selkirk outside the Malmaison Hotel in Liverpool.[48] Although Jackson was not willing to pursue the case, the Crown Prosecution Service decided a prosecution was necessary.[49] After pleading guilty, Selkirk was given a 12-month community supervision order and ordered to pay £300 costs.[50]

In 2017, Jackson was setting up a restaurant in London with her mother Marguerita. It was scheduled to open its doors by the end of August. She said, "I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I love visiting new restaurants and trying different cuisines all over the world. My love for food has inspired me to open this restaurant".[51] As of 4 March, 2017, Jackson announced her new mobile app, Amy Jackson Official App, as in-app social feed for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in collaboration with New York-based startup EscapeX.[52]

Synopsis

Born in London, England, on September 14, 1983, Amy Winehouse broke into the music business when, at age 16, a classmate passed on her demo tape. She signed her first record deal as a jazz vocalist, and her music later blossomed into an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, soul and R&B.

Winehouse won five Grammy Awards connected to her 2006 album Back to Black, and earned acclaim for songs like the title track, "Rehab" and "Love Is a Losing Game." Winehouse died tragically on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning.




Early Career

Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, in the suburb of Southgate in London, England. Her father, Mitch Winehouse, worked as a cab driver, while mother Janis was employed as a pharmacist. Winehouse's upbringing was surrounded by jazz; many of her uncles on her mother's side were professional jazz musicians, and her father sang as a child with his own family.

Winehouse's paternal grandmother was also once romantically involved with British jazz legend Ronnie Scott. Because of this musical background, Winehouse grew up listening to a diverse range of music, from James Taylor to Sarah Vaughan. At the age of 10, she became drawn to the rebellious spirit of TLC, Salt-N-Pepa and other American R&B and hip-hop acts, and founded a short-lived amateur rap group called Sweet 'n Sour.

At the age of 12, Winehouse was accepted into the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School, and a year later she received her first guitar. But by the age of 16, Winehouse was expelled for "not applying herself" and piercing her nose. 

That same year, she caught her first big break when a schoolmate and close friend, pop singer Tyler James, passed her demo tape to his label, A&R, who was searching for a jazz vocalist. The opportunity led her to a record deal with Island/Universal. 






Debut Album: 'Frank'

Her debut album, Frank (2003), was a critically acclaimed mixture of jazz, pop, soul and hip-hop. The album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize as well as two BRIT awards for Best Female Solo Artist and Best Urban Act. The debut single on the album, "Stronger Than Me," earned the new artist an Ivor Novello award. Frank also hit double platinum status.

During this time, Winehouse began developing a reputation as an unstable party girl, often showing up to her club or TV performances too drunk to sing a whole set. She also started a tumultuous, on-again-off-again relationship with music video assistant Blake Fielder-Civil who admitted to introducing Winehouse to hard drugs. In public, the couples' arguments often devolved into fistfights and dramatic scenes. In private, their romance centered around drugs, alcohol, physical abuse and self-harm.

International Star

By 2006, her management company finally suggested that Winehouse enter rehab for alcohol abuse. Instead, she dumped the company and turned the experience into the lead single for her second, critically acclaimed album Back to Black (2006). The song "Rehab," which discussed her refusal to receive treatment for substance abuse, became a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom and earned the artist another Ivor Novello award for best contemporary song. The album was also a critical success, winning the artist a BRIT award for Best Female Solo Artist and a BRIT nomination for Best British Album in 2007. 

Less than a month after her BRIT win, Back to Black made its American debut. It was an instant smash, hitting higher on the Billboard music charts than any other American debut by a British female recording artist in history. The album stayed in the Top 10 for several months, selling one million copies by the end of that summer, with "Rehab" becoming a top 10 U.S. hit as well. 








Marriage and Erratic Behavior

In April of 2007, Winehouse's relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil also blossomed into an engagement. Winehouse revealed that her romance with the 23-year-old was the inspiration for several of the Back to Black tracks.

 The couple eloped and married on May 18, 2007, in a ceremony in Miami, Florida.

















Winehouse, an admitted marijuana smoker, was dogged by reports of continued drug abuse and strange behavior. On August 8, 2007, the singer overdosed on several drugs, being brought to medical facilities in an incoherent state. First claiming exhaustion, Winehouse later told the News of the World that she overdosed after she had used a mix of heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine, whisky and vodka during a bar crawl in London. The episode put a planned tour of North America on hold. The August 21, 2007, announcement indicated that Winehouse had been ordered to rest and was working with doctors to address her health.


Arrests and Cancelled Appearances

Her European tour in the fall of 2007, however, was scheduled to continue. But while in Norway in October of 2007, an anonymous tip led police to the star's hotel in Bergen, where she was arrested and held in prison overnight for marijuana possession. Winehouse, her husband Fielder-Civil and a third unidentified person were jailed. The trio was released after paying $715 in fines.

In November 2007, Winehouse's husband was arrested again for allegedly offering a $400,000 bribe to a bartender whom he he had allegedly assaulted in June 2007. A seemingly incapacitated Winehouse then showed up in mid-November at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena to perform, greatly affected by the incarceration of Fielder-Civil. Some of the crowd responded with boos and walk-outs. Winehouse canceled all concerts and public appearances for the rest of 2007, again citing "doctor's orders." A month later, Winehouse was arrested on suspicion of attempting to interfere with her husband's case. She voluntarily reported to a police station and was arrested before questioning. She later blamed her husband's legal woes for her inability to continue her tour.

Despite her inconsistent touring schedule, Winehouse's album continued to sell, going platinum nearly five times that year. It became the bestselling album of 2007 in the United Kingdom.

Rehab and Record-Setting Grammy Wins

In January 2008, a video allegedly showing Winehouse smoking crack cocaine surfaced, leading to a brief stint in rehab. She was arrested in May 2008 for questioning, but wasn't formally charged in the case after police said they could not officially determine what the singer was smoking. After publicly admitting to illegal substance abuse, Winehouse was denied a U.S. visa due to her "use and abuse of narcotics." The visa prevented her from performing live at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Instead, she performed in London via satellite. 

During the evening's ceremony, Winehouse won five Grammy Awards, including prizes for Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year—becoming the first British singer to win five Grammy Awards, as well as tying with singer Beyoncé Knowles for the record of the most Grammy wins by a female artist in a single night. (Knowles broke that record in 2010, when she won six Grammy Awards in one night; and Adele tied that record with six Grammy wins in 2012.)



More Personal Setbacks

Despite her musical success, Winehouse's health and personal life began to quickly deteriorate. Her erratic behavior continued in June 2008, when she appeared to punch a fan during a performance at the Glastonbury Music Festival in England. Londoner James Gostelow, 25, told BBC News that Winehouse elbowed him in the forehead after someone in the crowd behind him threw a hat at her. In a widely circulated video of the incident, Winehouse was seen throwing a series of punches into the crowd. Gostelow said he had no intention of making a complaint to police, and Winehouse escaped criminal proceedings.

After the concert, Winehouse returned to a London clinic, where she had been receiving treatment for "traces of emphysema" and an irregular heartbeat caused by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes. Winehouse's father told reporters that his daughter was warned that she would have to wear an oxygen mask if she didn't stop abusing drugs. That same month, Fielder-Civil and three co-defendants pleaded guilty to assault and obstruction charges. The courts released Fielder-Civil from jail time on the condition that he stay in a drug rehabilitation center for long-term treatment.

By the end of 2008, the singer's marriage had dissolved. Winehouse had begun an extended stay on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, during which time she had allegedly met a new love interest. And tabloids had linked Fielder-Civil to German model Sophie Schandorff. In January 2009, Winehouse's spokesperson confirmed that divorce proceedings had begun between husband and wife, with Fielder-Civil filing for divorce and citing adultery as the reason for the split.

Attempted Comeback

Regardless of personal setbacks, 2009 proved to be another strong year for Winehouse. In 2008, her album Back to Black was declared the second-highest selling album in the world, and in 2009, she earned entry into the Guinness Book of World Records for "Most Grammy Awards Won by a British Female Act."

Additionally, Winehouse announced that she was starting her own record label, Lioness Records, later signing her 13-year-old goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, as the first musician on the label.







Death

Sadly, at the end of her life, Winehouse's enormous talent was overshadowed by her addiction to drugs and alcohol. The singer died tragically on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning.

Winehouse's life and career were the focus of the critically acclaimed documentary Amy, which hit theaters in July 2015 and was directed by Asif Kapadia.

 While the work has been widely celebrated, receiving an Academy Award in 2016 for best documentary, it upset Winehouse's family, with her father portrayed in a less than flattering light in the film. 













The family released a statement through a spokesperson after Amy was shown at the 2015 Cannes film festival,

stating that the project "is a missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent and that it is both misleading and contains some basic untruths."
