Gayatri Joshi (Marathi: गायत्री जोशी) is a model turned Bollywood actress. Her first film was 2004's Swades.
Career
She was one of the final five candidates in the 1999 Femina Miss India beauty pageant,[1] and was crowned on Sony Entertainment Channel through voting by viewers, and was chosen to represent India at the 2000 Miss International event in Japan.[1] She has worked as an advertising model in addition to making appearances in several music videos: She appeared in music videos of Jagjit Singh’s Kaghaz Ki Kashti and Hans Raj Hans' Jhanjaria.[2]

While she was still in college, she modelled for Bombay Dyeing, Philips, Ponds, Godrej, Sunsilk and LG, as well as the Hyundai ad with Shah Rukh Khan.[2] She has also modelled for the Seasons Catalogue and Calendar during 2001. She made her Bollywood debut in December 2004 in Ashutosh Gowarikar's film Swades opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Swades received strong acclaim from Indian film critics and Joshi received several citations as Best Female Newcomer in film awards for 2004.

Personal life
Joshi studied at Mount Carmel High School in Nagpur, and when the family re-located to Mumbai, she was enrolled in the JB Vachha High School in Dadar. After completing her schooling she went on to study in Sydenham College.[2] While still enrolled there, she modelled for brands such as Godrej, LG, Ponds, Bombay Dyeing, Sunsilk, Philips, as well as with Shahrukh Khan in the Hyundai ad.. She then went on to obtain a degree in Commerce from the same college.

She was chosen as one of the five finalists of the 1999 Femina Miss India Contest, and represented India at the Miss International beauty pageant in Japan during the same year.

After this success, she returned to modelling and appeared in the Seasons Catalogue and Calendar during the year 2001.

On 27 August 2005, she married Vikas Oberoi, Promoter of Oberoi Construction, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.[3]

Gayatri Jayaraman is an Indian film actress, who has appeared in predominantly Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam language films.

Early life[edit]

Gayatri Jayaraman was born on 27 September 1984 to Jayaraman, an auditor, and Chitra, a housewife. She was educated at Adarsh Vidyalaya and then Church Park in Mumbai. Gayatri grew up in Shahabad near Gulbarga till she was four years old before her family headed to Madras. She spent a year in Bangalore when in her eighth standard and this helped her pick up Kannada.[1] Gayatri initially wanted to pursue a career in medicine and despite getting 94 percent in board exams, she did not get a medical seat, and hence began reading a B.Sc in Life Science at IGNOU.[2] 

Gayatri balanced her time between modelling and education and thus also went on to study physiotherapy at SRM College in Chennai. About her decision to simultaneously pursue qualifications she revealed that "the average life of an actress on screen is maximum four years" and that "she can always return to physiotherapy once my career as an actress is over".[1]











She took up her first modelling assignments for Nailli Silks, followed by Kumaran Silks, Pothys and Chennai Silks while also participating in the beauty pageants, winning the Miss Tamil Nadu title in October 1997

 and Miss South India title in 1998.[3] She entered the final stages of Femina Miss India 2000, after being selected among the 26 finalists from 8000 entries and made it through to the final 5, eventually finishing fourth. She has also been a video jockey on television, having appeared for Fanta "Illimai Pudhumai" on Sun TV and "Telephone Manipol" on Vijay TV.[1]









Career[edit]

Gayathri started her career as an actress with director K. Balachander's tele-serial Azhukku Veshti and rejected offers from promienent directors such as Arjun before she decided to make her debut by featuring in Nagabharana's Neela.[4] Neela, a Kannada film about a tribal singer with cancer, won critical acclaim at the box office and was selected as one of the thirty-two Indian films to feature at the International Film Festival of India. 

Gayatri won a Cinema Express Award for her performance, with a critic describing it as a "matured performance gives an impression of her being an experienced actress".[1] She next appeared in an item number in Santosh Sivan's Asoka as a dancer on a boat in the song "Raat Ka Nasha" beside Kareena Kapoor.[5] She made her Tamil film debut after being approached by producer KRG to feature in his Manadhai Thirudivittai opposite Prabhu Deva. 

Gayatri, post-release, remarked that her role in the film was changed, with Kausalya playing the role that she had signed on to portray.[1] The film became a commercial failure, although her appearance in the song "Manjakattu Mynaa" got her noticed.

Her Telugu film debut was with Srikanth in Aaduthu Paaduthu, before she also went on to feature in a supporting role in Shree alongside Suriya, with Gayatri revealing that her role was chopped by the editors in post-production.[1] She featured in another small role in Vaseegara alongside Vijay and Sneha, before going on to feature in a series of unsuccessful Kannada and Malayalam films.

She retired from films after her marriage and is now a certified scuba diving instructor in the Andaman Islands and briefly returned to compere the Chennai Super Kings Cheer Leaders talent show on Vijay TV in 2009. She also notably, anchored the show Super Kudumbam on Sun TV in early 2013.[6]
