Within days of the Titanic’s sinking, talk began of finding the wreck. Given the limits of technology, however, serious attempts were not undertaken until the second half of the 20th century. In August 1985 Robert Ballard led an American-French expedition from aboard the U.S. Navy research ship Knorr. The quest was partly a means for testing the Argo, a 16-foot (5-metre) submersible sled equipped with a remote-controlled camera that could transmit live images to a monitor. The submersible was sent some 13,000 feet (4,000 metres) to the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, sending video back to the Knorr. On September 1, 1985, the first underwater images of the Titanic were recorded as its giant boilers were discovered. Later video showed the ship lying upright in two pieces. While the bow was clearly recognizable, the stern section was severely damaged. Covering the wreckage were rust-coloured stalactite-like formations. Scientists later determined that the rusticles, as they were named, were created by iron-eating microorganisms, which are consuming the wreck. By 2019 there was a “shocking” level of deterioration, and a number of notable features, such as the captain’s bathtub, were gone.

The Titanic—located at about 41°43′57′′ N, 49°56′49′′ W (bow section), some 13 nautical miles (24 km) from the position given in its distress signals—was explored numerous times by manned and unmanned submersibles. The expeditions found no sign of the long gash previously thought to have been ripped in the ship’s hull by the iceberg. Scientists instead discovered that the collision’s impact had produced a series of thin gashes as well as brittle fracturing and separation of seams in the adjacent hull plates, thus allowing water to flood in and sink the ship. In subsequent years, marine salvagers raised small artifacts from the wreckage as well as pieces of the ship itself, including a large section of the hull. Examination of these parts—as well as paperwork in the builder’s archives—led to speculation that low-quality steel or weak rivets may have contributed to the Titanic’s sinking.

ROV Hercules exploring Titanic wreckCountless renditions, interpretations, and analyses of the Titanic disaster transformed the ship into a cultural icon. In addition to being the subject of numerous books, the ship inspired various movies, notably A Night to Remember (1958) and James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic (1997). In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, artifacts from the ship formed the basis of a highly successful exhibit that toured the world, and a profitable business was developed transporting tourists to the Titanic’s wreck. However, many opposed the removal of items, and the issue became highly contentious, complicated by the fact that the wreckage lies in international waters and is thus outside the jurisdiction of any country.

Several museums dedicated to the liner draw thousands of visitors each year; in 2012, the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking, Titanic Belfast opened on the site of Harland and Wolff’s former shipyard, and it became one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Although the wreck of the Titanic will eventually deteriorate, the famed liner seems unlikely to fade from the public imagination.

Born February 15, 1899 in Litchfield, Minnesota, USA

Died August 14, 1985 in Woodland Hills, California, USA  (cerebral vascular thrombosis)

Birth Name Edith Holm Sondergaard

Height 5' 6" (1.68 m)

Mini Bio (1)

Sly, manipulative, dangerously cunning and sinister were the key words that best described the roles that Gale Sondergaard played in motion pictures, making her one of the most talented character actresses ever seen on the screen. She was educated at the University of Minnesota and later married director Herbert J. Biberman. Her husband went to find work in Hollywood and she reluctantly followed him there. Although she had extensive experience in stage work, she had no intention of becoming an actress in film. Her mind was changed after she was discovered by director Mervyn LeRoy, who offered her a key role in his film Anthony Adverse (1936); she accepted the part and was awarded the very first Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. LeRoy originally cast her as the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz (1939), but she felt she was not right for that role. Instead, she co-starred opposite Paul Muni in The Life of Emile Zola (1937), a film that won Best Picture in 1937. Sondergaard's most-remembered role was that of the sinister and cunning wife of a husband murdered by Bette Davis' character in The Letter (1940). Sondergaard continued her career rise in films such as Juarez (1939), The Mark of Zorro (1940), The Black Cat (1941), and Anna and the King of Siam (1946). Unfortunately, she was blacklisted when she refused to testify during the McCarthy-inspired "Red Scare" hysteria in the 1950s. She eventually returned to films in the 1960s and made her final appearance in the 1983 film Echoes (1982). Gale Sondergaard passed away of an undisclosed illness at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 86.

Spouse (2)

Herbert J. Biberman (8 May 1930 - 30 June 1971) ( his death) ( 2 children)

Neill O'Malley (1922 - 1930) ( divorced)

Trivia (23)

She was blacklisted with her husband in 1948.

Her daughter died in October 1965.

Was going to play the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (1939), but instead of making the witch similar to Snow White's beautiful but wicked queen, as was originally planned, it was decided the witch should be ugly. Gale then refused the role.

Was one of the main inspirations for the look of the Evil Queen/Witch in Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and was ironically rejected {due to her looks as previously mentioned) as the evil witch in The Wizard of Oz (1939), a film that sought to capitalize on the popularity of the former and fairy tales like it.

In high school plays, she studied at the Minneapolis School of Dramatic Arts.

Joined the Chautauqua theatre circuit in 1920 as an ingenue and a year later became a member of the John Keller Shakespeare Company, touring Canada and America in productions of "Hamlet," "Julius Caesar," "The Merchant of Venice" and "Macbeth.".

First actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Anthony Adverse (1936)).

In 1936 she and Maria Ouspenskaya became the first two actresses (of more than 50) to receive an Oscar nomination for their film debut. She was nominated (and won) the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Anthony Adverse (1936).

Sondergaard's parents had emigrated from Denmark separately.

Although she was born Edith, Sondergaard chose the name "Gale" as a stage name while an actress on the Chautauqua circuit.

After entering the University of Minnesota she joined the School of Music and Dramatic Arts, as the school did not have a drama department.

Soondergaard replaced Judith Anderson in the Theater Guild of New York's production of Eugene O'Neill's "Strange Interlude".

Despite popular belief, Sondergaard never signed a contract with Warners after winning an Oscar for "Anthony Adverse." She did sign a one-year contract with MGM in 1938 and a long-term deal with Universal, which produced 14 of her films between 1941 and 1947.

After she was blacklisted in 1947, director Mervyn LeRoy, who had given her her first break in "Anthony Adverse," cast her in a supporting role as Barbara Stanwyck's mother in "East Side, West Side" in order to test industry reaction. The negative response to her appearance completed the blacklisting, and she didn't appear in another major Hollywood film film for 28 years.

After she was called back for retakes on the TV movie "The Cat Creature," she was surprised by Charlton Heston, who presented her with a gold Oscar statuette replacing the plaque she had won decades earlier for "Anthony Adverse.".

Was considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939).

Was the 9th actress to receive an Academy Award; she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Anthony Adverse (1936) at the 9th Academy Awards on March 4, 1937.

Biography in "Actresses of a Certain Character: Forty Familiar Hollywood Faces from the Thirties to the Fifties" by Axel Nissen.

Daughter of Hans (1867-1947) and Kristine (née Hansen) Sondergaard (1872-1934). Both were born in Denmark, immigrating to America in 1892.

Had two adopted children with husband Herbert J. Biberman: daughter Joan Kristina Campos (nee Biberman; December 31, 1940 - October 24, 1965), and son Daniel Hans Biberman (b. December 11, 1942).

Was in three Oscar Best Picture nominees: Anthony Adverse (1936), The Life of Emile Zola (1937) and The Letter (1940). The Life of Emile Zola won in this category.

Although unrelated, she bears an uncanny resemblance to Cornelia Otis Skinner.

Older sister of Hester Sondergaard.

Personal Quotes (1)

My parents were both progressive people learning much from Henrik Ibsen. My mother believed that a woman should not be tied down to family with nothing else in her life. They were also progressive politically. My father, we thought, voted the Democratic ticket, but actually he voted the Socialist ticket; my mother was a suffragette and I marched in parades with her.

Mamta Mohandas on cinema,
her battle with cancer and on living life
on her own terms BORN 1985 NOVEMBER 14

Mamta Mohandas’ optimism and enthusiasm are contagious. On the last day of her shoot for Udaharanam Sujatha in Thiruvananthapuram, I meet her before she returns to the US. It was selfie time for her with the cast and crew of the film. “There was just three days of shoot, but I had a good time. I love people...Actually my love for life comes from my love for people,” says Mamta when she finally sits down for a chat in her caravan.
She has plenty of reasons to be in love with her life. Her career is on an upswing and she has been shuttling between Los Angeles (LA), her home for the last three years, and India several times a month for work.
Her packed itinerary in India includes movies, a reality show on the small screen (“because her mother loves the show”) and other commitments, whereas in LA, life moves at her own pace. She is obviously enjoying living in the two time zones.
“Back in LA, I am in no hurry. I go on long drives, especially to meet my friends. I work out or listen to music. These days I am listening to Italian musician Ludovico Einaudi. Or, I cook — I make Italian or grill fish or chicken... make salads. Once in a while I make some rice and curry...!” Mamta breaks into a hearty laugh, probably thinking about the good times that she has had.
The survivor

The only appointment that she has to keep is with her doctor. Without any prodding, she candidly says, “Yes, I am still under treatment.” As one wonders where she draws the strength to narrate her battle with cancer over and over again, she smiles, saying, “I tell it like a story!”
Mamta was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and had gone through multiple relapses before she decided to subject herself to a clinical trial in the United States.
“I decided to do it because I had no other option and now I tell my doctor that I am the best guinea pig they can get. The decision was taken when I was shooting for Varsham (2014). I don’t know how I managed to complete the seven-day shoot. The pain was so severe when I woke up in the morning that there were days when I used to pray that I don’t wake up at all!” says Mamta, her eyes welling up.
She chose to go for the trial, living on her own in LA. “I didn’t let my parents go with me. So except for the arrangements for my treatment, I had to do everything else from scratch... like finding an accommodation, my transportation, running a home....”
A new life

17tvmmamta1
The treatment and her stay in the US became a new chapter of her life. “The treatment is the toughest part for any cancer patient. The pain, weakness, loss of hair.... But I did not have to experience any of those (laughs). In five to six months, I was better and hopeful,” she says.
Nevertheless, Mamta says, she wasn’t feeling happy. There was something amiss,” she recalls. That’s when actor Dileep got in touch with her to act in Two Countries. “I had something to look forward to. That’s when I really started living in LA,” she smiles.
Now that her career is back on track, Mamta says she is ready to do any kind of role that she feels she can enact. “The team I am working with is also extremely important. In Thoppil Joppan, I had a minuscule role, but I enjoyed being a part of it. In Udaharanam Sujatha, I play a District Collector, who is an inspiration for the character played by Manju chechi [Manju Warrier]. The role came to me because the makers thought I would fit into that role. Same is the case with my next movie Goodalochana, written by Dhyan Sreenivasan and directed by Thomas Sebastian. I play an entrepreneur and art enthusiast whose path crosses with four youngsters who want to start a business venture,” she says.
She feels that Malayalam cinema is going through a phase where heroines are getting the space they deserve.
“Women have started speaking their mind and that is getting reflected in our films as well. I strongly believe that cinema is a reflection of society,” she says.
The conversation naturally veers to the newly-formed Women in Cinema Collective in Mollywood. “It is unique and I am happy that there is a forum where women can voice their views and concerns. I will strongly support the venture till the day it becomes a ‘feminist-only’ platform. For me humanity is important,” she asserts.
And in the frame of mind that she is now, she only wants to stay positive and look ahead.

“Life is only getting better and better. However, I’m cautious about my personal life. I am not yet ready for a relationship. That calls for vulnerability and I don’t want to put myself in that spot now. Otherwise I am in control of my life!”
On her co-actors
Dileep: We are really comfortable with each other as artistes and friends. We are good at playing opposites on screen. And he never tries to overpower me or dominate me in any scene.
Manju Warrier: Although we had never interacted much before, when we met on the sets of Udaharanam Sujatha we immediately hit it off. It was like two seasoned performers coming together. We have shot some really nice scenes. She is amazing as an actress and I can go on and on about her performances.
Prithviraj: We share a great equation. People say that we look good together on screen and that we sound similar in our views!
Up next

Mamta reunites with Prithviraj in Nirmal Sahadev’s trilingual movie, Detroit Crossing. Also, she is acting opposite Fahadh Faasil for the first time in Carbon, directed by cinematographer Venu.
