P.LEELA ,PLAYBACK SINGER BORN  1934 MAY 19 -2005 OCTOBER 31 I was pleasantly surprised this week when a South Indian journal asked me to revise an article I had written earlier about the singer Porayathu Leela – popularly known as P. Leela. The request for an article to denote Leela’s birthday was most unexpected as she had passed away 10 years ago on October 31st 2005. Leela, born on 19 May 1934, was ethnically a Malayalee who resided and died in the Tamil Nadu state capital of Chennai. The present generation of film song fans may have never heard her or even heard of P. Leela. She was the uncrowned queen of song in the realm of Tamil films during the fifties and sixties of the last century. P. Leela has sung about 5,000 film songs in South Indian languages such as Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and even in Bengalee and Sinhala. Her Tamil renditions may number around 1,000. She was a household name in those days. There was a time when Indian artistes and technicians play...

Tamil Cinema’s evolution from Theatre

Image
. Tamil Cinema’s evolution from Theatre (Part 1) . By P V Gopalakrishnan Tamil cinema was literally born in 1910, with the release of the first silent ‘Tamil’ film ‘Keechaka Vadham’, produced, directed, shot and edited by R. Nataraja Mudaliar, known today as the father of Tamil cinema. The film was based on an episode from the epic Mahabharata & was received very well. It is said that Nataraja Mudaliar met one Stewart Smith, a cinematographer from Britain who was then filming a documentary on Lord Curzon & learnt the basics of cinematography from him. Later, in 1915, Mudaliar also established South India’s first film studio at Purasawalkam, Madras. In this first silent Tamil movie, stage artistes of that time, Raju Mudaliar and Jeevarathnam played the roles of Keechaka and Draupadi respectively. The cost of this 600 feet length film is said to be Rs. 35,000, then considered expensive. The production was completed in just five weeks, with Pammal Sambandha Mudaliar ...

SARDAR VALLABHAI PATEL ,THE MAN WHO CONSOLITATE 565 STATES  WITHIN 2 YEARS   BORN 1875 OCTOBER 31 "சர்தார் வல்லபபாய் படேல் தன் குடும்பத்திற்காக எதையும் செய்ததில்லை; அவரது குடும்பத்தாரும் "படேல் எங்களுக்கே சொந்தம்' என்று உரிமை கொண்டாடியதில்லை' என்று பிரதமர் நரேந்திர மோடி புகழாரம் சூட்டினார்.

PANDARA VANNIYAN , LAST KING OF VANNI  DIED 1811 OCTOBER 31 Biography[edit source] Kulasegaram Vairamuthu Pandara Vanniyan was the last King of Vanni. Much remains unclear about his family, but reports state that he had one sister, Nallanachal Vanniyan, and two younger brothers called Kayilaya Vanniyan (Minister) and Periya Meynaar (Commander of the State).[5] Pandara Vanniyan married Kumarasinghe Maha Vanniya’s family of present day Nuwara Wewa, who held the office of residential Governor and Custodian of the formerly Tamil area. Marriages between Vanniar Chieftain families in the northern and southern regions helped to unite and strengthen rule. Thus, when Pandara Vanniyan married into the Nuwara Wewa family, he gained political power in the south Vanni as well as in the north. It is said that he lived in Kumulamunai, which is today in Mullaitivu District. History[edit source] See also: Flags of Tamils Vanniar chieftain, Pandara Vanniyan, appeared to have paid so...
