I1524ஆண்டு ஐரோப்பிய கண்டுபிடிப்புக்கு முன் இப்பகுதியில் 5,000 லெனபி அமெரிக்க பூர்வகுடிகள் வசித்து வந்தனர்[16] . பிரெஞ்சு அரசுக்கு கீழ் வேலை பார்த்த இத்தாலிய கடலோடி ஜியோவானி டா வெர்ரராசானோ இப்பகுதியை கண்டவர். 1614ல் டச்சு மக்களின் இரோம வணிக குடியேற்றம் முதல் ஐரோப்பி குடியேற்றமாகும். இவர்கள் மேன்காட்டனின் தென்முனையை நியூ ஆம்ஸ்டர்டாம் என அழைந்தனர். டச்சு குடியேற்றவாத அதிகாரி மின்யூயிட் மேன்காட்டன் தீவை லெனபிக்களிடம் இருந்து 1626ல் 60 கில்டருக்கு வாங்கினார்.
