SHAKILA , DISAPPOINTED ABANDONED PERSON

SHAKILA , DISAPPOINTED

ABANDONED PERSON

SHAKILA HINDI ACTRESS BORN 1935 JANUARY 1

SHAKILA HINDI ACTRESS
BORN 1935 JANUARY 1

Born Badshah Begum on January 1, 1935, Shakila had two younger sisters, Noor and Nasreen, who were also actors. She was introduced to the movies by filmmaker Abdul Rashid Kardar, who offered her a role in Dastaan (1950). She shot to fame with Guru Dutt's Aar Paar, in which she played the other woman in Dutt's life. Shakila starred in CID, a role overshadowed by Waheeda Rehman. She quit cinema after acting in close to 50 films.

Having begun her career in small roles in the early 1950s, Shakila was first noticed when she played the grey-shaded second lead to heroine Shyama in Aar Paar (1954), which Guru Dutt produced, directed and acted in.

Her seductive performances in the ever-popular club number Babuji Dheere Chalna and the fabulous torch song Hoon Abhi Main Jawaan (two O P Nayyar beauties sung by Geeta Dutt) made filmmakers sit up and notice this new talent.
Along with a flourishing career in fantasy films such as Alibaba Aur 40 Chor (opposite Mahipal) and Haatim Tai (opposite Jairaj), Shakila was also romantically paired opposite matinee idols like Raj Kapoor in Shriman Satyavadi and Dev Anand in CID; and was serenaded by 1960s sensation Shammi Kapoor with Baar Baar Dekho in China Town.

She worked consistently for a decade before giving up her career for marriage.

She is perhaps best remembered for the many lustrous songs picturised on her including Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishara Ho Gaya, Neend Na Mujhko Aaye, Zulfon Ki Ghata Lekar, Sau Baar Janam Lenge, Laagi Chhute Na Ab Toh Sanam and the burnished Lata Mangeshkar beauty Aye Mere Dil e Nadaan Tu Gham Se Na Ghabrana.

Shakila's younger sister Noor was married to the famous comedian, Johnny Walker.

Johnny's son Nasirr Khan, an actor in his own right, recalls, "My aunt featured in Aar Paar along with my father. Her younger sister Noor was paired opposite my father in the same film and they fell in love and subsequently got married."

"My aunt was a very lively, lovely, social person. She lived life to the fullest. She was a people's person. She always had a nice comment to make about my shows on TV. My father, like me, was extremely fond of Shakila aunty."
Her contemporary from the 1950s, actress Jabeen says, "I was watching Kaun Banega Crorepati on TV when I got a call from Waheeda (Rehman). She told me, 'I have some sad news. Shakila had passed away'."

"Waheeda, Shakila, Nanda and I were a group of four close friends. We would meet at least once in 10 days before I left for America. Shakila had worked with each of us at some point of time in her career -- with Waheeda in CID, with Nanda in Agra Road and with me in Hathkadi."

"Shakila had heard about me before we met because I had befriended her sister Noor when we worked together in Lutera."

Describing Shakila as a large-hearted, philanthropic woman, Jabeen recalls, "When I came down from America, I was living as a paying guest. But Shakila insisted I stay with her and extended me a warm welcome for two months."

"Recently, when I was hospitalised after a surgery, she came on a wheelchair to visit me despite her respiratory problems. It's a gesture I will remember forever."

"She was a truly wonderful soul who will be remembered for her good deeds and friendly disposition."

Shakila, yesteryear’s top heroine who featured in such cult movies as Wadia Movietone’s Hatim Tai (1956), Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar (1954) and CID (1956), opposite Raj Kapoor in Shriman Satyawadi (1960) and Shammi Kapoor in China Town (1962), passed away after a massive heart attack in the city on Wednesday afternoon. She was 82.

A resident of Bandra, the actress often described as ‘the fairy queen of Indian fantasies’ was sought to be rushed to a nearby well-known hospital. Her colleagues from the ’50s cinema said it was a pity that she could not find immediate admission and had to be taken to the Arogya Nidhi hospital in Juhu, at a further distance away.
Hindi cinema actor from the '50s, Shakila passed away on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. She was 82. Shakila had featured in hit films Hatim Tai (1956), Aar Paar (1954), CID (1956) and China Town (1962). Her nephew, actor Nasir Khan, told mid-day, "She wasn't keeping well and had been in and out of the hospital. She was diagnosed with a kidney ailment recently and was on dialysis, which led to further complications."

Khan is the son of late comedian Johnny Walker, who married Shakila's sister, Noor. "My father was fond of her (Shakila). She was a social person, full of life. She was always surrounded by people," he remembered.

Shakila is best remembered for the song Babuji Dheere Chalna. The late actor's close friend and veteran actor Asha Parekh said, "She was always there for others. She was by my side when my father passed away. Waheeda [Rehman], Nanda and Shakila were a gang. She was a soft-spoken and kind person, hardly ever raised her voice. Saira [Banu] was trying to get her admitted to a hospital and was with her yesterday."

Yesteryear actress Shakila, best remembered for her roles in CID and Aar Paar, passed away on Wednesday, September 20,2017 at the age of 82. A  star of the ’50s and ’60s, Shakila has featured in hit songs like

Babuji Dheere Chalna,
Neend Na Mujhko Aaye and
Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar.

When Waheeda Rehman made her debut in CID, Shakila was already a star. But the two struck a friendship that lasted for 62 years. Here, Waheeda remembers her friend and recounts how the two gelled together.

“Bichde sabhi baari baari…First my close friend Nanda, then Sadhana and now Shakila. I am losing all my friends. But that’s life, I suppose… Shakila and I go back a very long way, to my very first Hindi film, Guru Dutt’s CID in 1956 where she was the heroine and I was the vamp, and never for a minute did she let me feel like a newcomer. Halaanke woh koi bahot senior nahin thi (She wasn’t too senior to me), but she had done more movies than me in Hindi whereas I was just starting out. She was very nice, very helpful. You tend to remember those who are good to you at the beginning.

“Shakila and I didn’t have even one shot together in CID, but we struck up a friendship that lasted  62 years. She would give me advice on career and life. Later, I worked with Nanda in Kala Bazar and there began another friendship that endured until her death. Then I met Jabeen with whom I never worked, but we had the same dance teacher and hence bumped into one another quite often. Shakila, Nanda, Jabeen and I became an inseparable foursome. We went to movies and dinner together. And we went for picnics to Lonavla and Khandala. In those days, there were wide-open spaces, the air was fresh and clean, bahot saaf-suthri thi hamari duniya and we four girls sang and laughed and shared giggles together. You know, although all three of us were actresses there was never any sense of competitiveness among us. In fact, we never discussed our careers when we met. We spoke about everything else under the sun except films. Those were such happy carefree days. I miss them. And I will miss Shakila. Once she got married and moved to Germany, our communication diminished. There was trouble in that marriage. Shakila moved back to Mumbai and then remarried and moved to London. We were both living in Mumbai during the past years, but we didn’t meet as often as we would have liked to. However, we were constantly in touch right until the end. In fact, I spoke to her just a few days before her death. She told me she had been to Lilavati Hospital for a check-up. I admonished her for not giving me time to meet her. She promised to meet me very soon. She didn’t keep her promise.”

SHAKILA ,HINDI ACTRESS EXPIRED SEPTEMBER 20,2017

SHAKILA ,HINDI ACTRESS
EXPIRED SEPTEMBER 20,2017

What better way to launch a new year than with a post on one of my favourite actresses? That too on her birthday?
Yes, today, January 1, is the 78th birthday of the beautiful Shakila. Star of my all-time favourite ‘Bollywood noir’ suspense film, CID. Star of one of my favourite Shammi Kapoor films, China Town. Star of one of my favourite Muslim socials, Nakli Nawab. Luminously lovely. Friendly (as Edwina Lyons can probably testify). And a good actress.
And I’m lucky enough to have, for this occasion, a guest post, written by Shakila’s niece Tasneem Khan (daughter of Shakila’s sister Noor and the legendary Johnny Walker). Over to Tasneem:
Shakila, Noor and Nasreen are three beautiful sisters who were brought up by their Bua (aunt) as they had lost their parents at a very young age. Living in Mumbai proved to be difficult and led to a tough childhood growing up but, fate decides destiny as in 1950, Shakila Aunty got her first child artist role in the film Dastan. She portrayed actress Veena as a child.
Her debut role as an actress was in Guru Dutt’s film “Aar Paar” and I don’t need to say much about the film as her song “Babuji dheeray chalna” is ever so popular, even today. She worked with top notch directors like A.R. Kardar, Mehboob Khan and Guru Dutt. It was Mehboob Khan who first introduced her into movies.
She has many melodious songs picturized on her which are enjoyed even today such as:
Baar baar dekho, hazaar baar dekho
Ankhon hi ankhon mein ishaara ho gaya
Neend na mujhko aaye dil mera
Laagi chutey na ab to sanam
Ae mere dile nadaan tu gam
Leke pehla pehla pyar
Sau baar janam lengay

Shakila Aunty has over 50 films to her credit and was lucky to have worked with many fantastic top actors such as Chandrashekhar, Shammi Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Manoj Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Sunil Dutt, Pradeep Kumar, Jairaj, Vijay Anand and last but not the least, her most favorite co-artist/brother-in-law, Johnny Walker!
In 1963 she walked away from the lime light to retire and settle down. She has faced turbulent ups & downs in her life and has bravely faced them. To this day, she is as beautiful and gracious as she ever was in her yesteryears. Shakila Aunty is extremely loving, stylish and elegant in her lifestyle. Today, when she is recognized, she is really happy and appreciates the fact that “aaj bhi log mujhe pehchantey hain”.
Shakila Aunty has moved with the times but never lost touch with her friends – Nimmi, Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Jabeen, Nanda, Shyama, Azra, etc. She visits them and keeps in touch. Shakila Aunty for me is a sweetheart. She is ever so pretty, loving, caring and wins you with her beautiful smile. Love you Shakila Aunty!

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
She had great fun while she worked in films. But once Shakila quit and settled down to domestic bliss in London, she hasn’t missed the arc lights.

Whenever the songs of “C.I.D.” or “Chinatown” are heard, one remembers with nostalgia the frail looking heroine of those films. More than twenty years after she left the industry, Shakila still has the same fragile face. But she is no more slim.

Shakila quit films in 1962 when she decided to get married and leave India to settle in London with her husband. She has a twelve year old daughter. She now shuttles between London and Bombay. We met her at her Marine Drive flat. “It’s years since I’ve left the industry, I don’t want to be written about now,” she protested. But once she got started, she began at the very beginning.

“I started my career in films in 1953 with a film called ‘Alibaba’. I had a small role in the film. It did extremely good business. My career took off with ‘Aar Paar° where I had a side role with Shyama and Guru Dutt. I played the heroine in Guru Dutt’s ‘C.I.D.’. I enjoyed working with Guru Dutt. He was a wonderful person and a perfectionist. In ‘Aar Paar’ I had a song sequence which he wanted me to do in a particular way. He took 30-40 takes before he was satisfied! Although I was the heroine in ‘C.I.D.’, it was Waheeda who was given a lot of importance because she was a Guru Dutt protégé. Dev Anand was my hero but there wasn’t any special rapport between us. He used to be very quiet. I was terribly shy those days.

“In fact, many people thought I was a snob because I didn’t talk to anybody. Nanda was one of them. We had worked together in a film called ‘Agra Road’. I thought she was a snob too. I’ll tell you how we became friends. Once I was driving down from one of the studios in the suburbs. I had tied a scarf round my head and was wearing dark glasses because it was very sunny. Her car was behind mine and she wanted to see who was driving the car ahead. When she drove past, she recognized me. She waved and asked me to stop the car. I still remember what she said when she got out of her car. ‘I wanted to know who this beautiful girl is.’ She got into my car and we got talking. She decided I was not a snob. We decided to meet regularly so I told her that Waheeda too had no friends so why don’t we visit her? That’s how the three of us became friends. Jabeen was also part of our group.

“The four of us went everywhere together. These days there is no craze to watch film-stars, at least, not in Bombay. Those days, you couldn’t go anywhere without collecting a mob outside. I remember the time the four of us went to have Chinese lunch at a restaurant near the Gateway of India. Half way through our meal, the owner of the restaurant came to us and requested us to leave. A huge crowd had gathered outside and wanted to meet us. Finally we were whisked away from the back door!”

“Nanda was the mischievous one amongst us. One day she suggested we go to Waheeda’s place and fool her. So we all wore burkhas and went to Waheeda’s house. Her sister opened the door and was quite surprised to see burkha clad women. We told her we had come from Pakistan and we were Waheeda’s fans, and we started giggling. Waheeda was sitting right there and called us in. She had recognized our laughs!”

“After I went off to London, Waheeda and Nanda got very close. Although I have been away, we have still maintained our friendship. Just the other day Nanda called me up. Now she’s going to feel lonely since Waheeda has shifted to Bangalore.”

Incidentally, it was Nanda who told us Shakila was in town and gave us her telephone number.

Of the men, Shakila enjoyed working most with, Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar and Pran. “I found Dada Moni the most intelligent of all the actors. Whenever I used to shoot with either Dada Moni or Pran, I’d sit on the sets just to watch them at work. Both of them were great fun. Even today when I meet Pran, we share the same warmth and affection. I can’t say the same about the others except, perhaps, Dilip Kumar. Yusuf Saab treats you like a queen and makes you feel the most important person around. That is something not everyone can do.

“I enjoyed working with Shammi Kapoor too. He was a very jolly person. Talking of jolly people, I can’t forget Kishore Kumar. We worked together in a film called ‘Begunah’. It was based on a Danny Kaye film called ‘Knock On The Wood’. It was a very good comedy. Unfortunately, a week after the film was released, Danny Kaye came to Bombay and heard the film was based on his film and had the film banned.”

“Working for this film was great fun because of Kishore Kumar. Once he came on the sets there would be a lot of confusion. He would jump around the place. During that film, the entire unit worked as one team and all because of Kishore Kumar. He was a nice guy. He was eccentric and one couldn’t believe him. I remember he told me that he was divorcing his wife Ruma because she left his dinner on the table and went to bed. When he got home he’d find the cats eating his food and he was left to eat the remains!”

“That reminds me of Madhubala. I first worked with Madhubala in one of my earliest films Fali Saab’s ‘Armaan’, where I had just one song and two scenes. Madhubala was the heroine of the film and already a big star. I was very young, around fifteen, and very nervous. The song sequence we were doing required me to come running down some steps and clap in front of the camera. Madhubala was standing next to the camera and each time I came down the steps she giggled and it made me so nervous I forgot to clap. I was so disheartened by her that I wanted to go home and never work in films again. That was my first encounter with Madhubala. After that I didn’t work with her. Later, she married Kishore.”

“Much later, one day, out of the blue, I got a call from her. She asked me to go and meet her at her house but insisted I go alone. I knew that nobody was allowed inside her house and I had not still forgotten the humiliation of that day. I refused to go and see her. Her family and my family knew the same ‘pir saab’. She sent a message through him asking me to go and see her. He was a respected man, so I agreed to go. I went to her house alone and as I walked in through the gate I saw someone watching me from a window above. A voice asked me ‘Have you come alone?’ It was Madhubala. When I said ‘yes’, she asked me to come up the stairs. As I climbed up, I saw her standing at the head of the staircase. I get goose pimples when I remember that day. I had seen her on the sets, at the height of glory. A woman so beautiful that everyone looked on her as some kind of goddess. And the woman standing there — was dressed in white, no make up, she looked as white as her saree.” Shakila stopped to point to a marble statue in her room. “Whenever I see this statue I think of Madhubala as I saw her that day,” and continued. She took my hand and took me inside. We sat down. She looked ill and upset. She clutched my hand and said, ‘I know you are Waheeda’s best friend. I want you to tell her to stop chasing my husband. Tell her she should never work with my husband again.’ I couldn’t believe my ears. She had called me over to talk ill of my own friend. I told her that Waheeda was not that sort of a person, and least of all she wasn’t interested in Kishore but she wouldn’t listen. She repeatedly asked me to tell Waheeda not to sign any more films with Kishore. I told her I was in no position to do any such thing and left immediately.”

“I decided to tell Waheeda about the incident. She told me that Madhubala had in fact called her up herself and told her the same thing and she didn’t know what to make of it. Later, Madhubala called me up once again. This time I refused to meet her. I went off to Bangalore and there I heard she had expired. To date I regret not having gone to meet her. God knows what she had wanted. Who would’ve ever thought that the most beautiful famous actress of our times would meet such a sad end . . .”

“There was one thing I admired about Madhubala. Her infallible love for her parents. Their happiness came before all else. Until the end, she wanted to see that they lived life in the comfort they were used to. These days one doesn’t see that kind of sentiment.”

Shakila bears no traces of her filmi connections. Unlike other star homes there are no life size portraits, there are no trophies or awards to boast of her career in films.

“I was in films for barely ten years. And just when I was beginning to get popular, I threw it all up to get married. Besides, I don’t believe in awards. Not since I met Manoj Kumar anyway! He is the man who once told me how awards can be manipulated — by buying up a large number of copies of magazines that give awards by popularity poll.”

Now, Shakila has no use for awards or trophies. She is content and happy with her small family. And nothing will make her come back into films. (Shakila interviewed by Nalini Uchil in 1984).
