GURMEET RAM RAHIM SINGH -HISTORY OF A SATIST , MURDERER

GURMEET RAM RAHIM SINGH -HISTORY OF A SATIST , MURDERER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ram Rahim Family History: The story of a devil, a saint and Papa's angels
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 23-year-old boy Gurmeet Singh became Huzoor Maharaj Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh ji is now just an ordinary convict in Rohtak's Suniara jail after a special CBI court found him guilty of raping a follower.

Before becoming an ascetic he had a family that he officially renounced but like all other dualities in his life, he continued to be the head of the family. His story is as astonishing and colourful as his films.

He did not have humble beginnings. His father Maghar Singh was a landlord in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district. Mother Naseeb Kaur was a god-fearing housewife. Maghar Singh came in touch with Dera Sacha Sauda pretty early in life. The dera founded by Baba Balochistani Beparwah Mastana ji attracted followers from the backward and dalit sections of society, who couldn't get the equality that Sikhism promised. Jat and Khatri Sikhs never accorded them equality in practice.

Maghar Singh was a Jat Sikh. The dera head Shah Satnam was a Khatri Sikh, who had succeeded Mastana. Maghar Singh was a follower of Satnam Shah and devoted a lot of time in spreading his spiritual leader's thoughts. Maghar Singh's son Gurmeet wasn't as spiritual but accompanied his father to the dera.

Gurmeet Singh's friend Gurjant Singh was jailed after he avenged his uncle's murder. In jail Gurjant was radicalised by separatist Khalistani militants. Once he came out of the jail, Gurjant became a Khalistani terrorist and rose quickly in the ranks. Gurmeet meanwhile was a full-time worker in the dera, doing odd jobs, driving a tractor or assisting his father in seva.

Then, in an unexpected announcement, dera head Shah Satnam announced that he would retire after handing over the leadership to a successor. There were three contenders. Gurmeet was not one of them.

In a surprise public announcement, the dera head anointed Gurmeet Singh his successor and gave him the name Huzoor Maharaj Gurmeet Ram Rahim. People in Sirsa say Gurjant Singh and a revolver were involved in the process.

There is no evidence of any threat of violence, but people still attribute Gurmeet's rise to Gurjant's notoriety. Gurjant was later killed by security forces in Mohali.

The new dera head wasn't as simple-living-high-thinking leader as his predecessors. His love for shiny costumes took an obsessive tone later. He has a son and two daughters when he became celibate. The family that he publicly renounced continued to be with him in his dera quarters. He himself was surrounded by sadhikas (women devotee attendees).

He later adopted a bubbly young girl Honeypreet as his third daughter. The three call themselves Papa's Angels. All other devotees also call him Pitaji or Papa ji. Honeypreet is the same woman who accompanied Baba Ram Rahim while he was being flown in a helicopter from the police lines complex in Panchkula.

Both Charanpreet and Amarpreet are married to men given really fancy names by Baba Ram Rahim. Charanpreet's sons are named Sweetluck Singh and Subah-e-Dil. The daughters have acted in his MSG series of films.

The sons-in-law assist in managing the dera business. His son Jasmeet Insan ( a surname all his followers adopt) is married to a Punjab Congress MLA's daughter Husanmeet Kaur, now Insane.

Ram Rahim built a cave-themed palatial underground home in the dera where he would meditate and sexually exploit women. Based on the concept of harem in palaces, he would choose girls from among the devotees, make them surrender their bodies before him and these women would later remain in the dera and wait for being married off to male devotees who followed his orders like slaves or devotees do.

These women were guarded by men allegedly neutered or castrated by the dera. This was not a secret. His private quarters were always guarded by his trusted gang of girls.
The rape, by the way, was called an act of pardon (maafi to be precise). Some women, as was later revealed, believed it was a blessing. But not all.

The two women who testified against him had similar stories. The primary complainant, whose anonymous letter to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, became the basis of an FIR by CBI in 2002, told the CBI court that she was called by Pitaji (that's what they call him) into his gufa (cave) in the intervening night of August 28 and 29, 1999 for granting maafi (pardon).

He threatened to kill her if she did not give in. The rape made her realise the reality of the dera. She complained to her brother, who revolted and escaped with her. He was later murdered.

The second complainant had grown up in the dera where her parents taught in a school. She was guarding the cave residence of the guru. He called her and she went in. The so-called Pitaji was in bed, apparently naked. She was shocked and tried running away. But it was too late. Nobody came to help her. She was raped. She managed to escape later. She lived to tell her story to the CBI court.

There are scores of other women who have remained silent out of fear or hopelessness. While the man loved his daughters and married them off to a life in luxury, his victims, who he called daughters, but treated like slaves have to live lives without dignity.

British navigator James Cook discovered and charted New Zealand and Australia's Great Barrier Reef on his ship HMB Endeavour, and later disproved the existence of the fabled southern continent Terra Australis. His voyages provided the first accurate map of the Pacific.

Synopsis

Born on October 27, 1728, in Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, James Cook was a naval captain, navigator and explorer who, in August 21,1770, discovered and charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on his ship HMB Endeavour. He later disproved the existence of Terra Australis, a fabled southern continent. Cook's voyages helped guide generations of explorers, and provided the first accurate map of the Pacific. He died on February 14, 1779, in Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii.

Early Life and Career

James Cook was born in Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, on October 27, 1728, the son of a Scottish farmhand. As a teenager, Cook did farming work alongside his father until, at the age of 18, he was offered an apprenticeship by a Quaker shipowner in a small seaside village near Whitby, England. The experience proved to be fortuitous for the future naval officer and explorer, bringing him in contact with both the ocean and ships along the port.

Naval Officer, Navigator and Explorer

Cook eventually joined the British Navy and, at age 29, was promoted to ship's master. During the Seven Years War (1756-63), he commanded a captured ship for the Royal Navy. In 1768, he took command of the first scientific expedition to the Pacific. In 1770, on his ship the HMB Endeavour, Cook discovered and charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia—since credited as one of the world's most dangerous areas to navigate.

After his return to England, Cook was chosen to circumnavigate and explore Antarctica. On this voyage, he charted present-day Tonga, Easter Island, New Caledonia, the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia, and disproved the existence of Terra Australis, a fabled southern continent. (Cook named the Hawaiian Islands the Sandwich Islands after the Earl of Sandwich, also known as John Montagu.)
The routes of Captain James Cook's voyages. The first voyage is shown in red, second voyage in green, and third voyage in blue. The route of Cook's crew following his death is shown as a dashed blue line.

Later Years and Legacy

During all his voyages, James Cook successfully fought scurvy (a deadly disease caused by vitamin deficiency) by feeding his crew a diet that included watercress, sauerkraut and orange extract. He died in a skirmish with islanders during a winter layover in Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, on February 14, 1779.

Today, Cook's voyages are credited with helping to guide generations of explorers, as well as with providing the first accurate map of the Pacific, and many believe that he did more to fill the map of the world than any other explorer in history.

DILIP KUMAR AND HIS HEROINES

DILIP KUMAR AND HIS HEROINES

Since 1944, the thespian has acted opposite almost all of Hindi cinema’s finest actresses. We celebrate his 94th birthday by looking back at the actresses with whom he created magic onscreen.

With his debut in Amiya Chakrabarty’s Jwar Bhata (1944) to his last film in 1998, Qila, actor Dilip Kumar has appeared in a few comedies, been especially lauded for his dramatic work and essayed characters which actors till today hold as the high standard in industry. Througout his career, he has also been fortunate to act opposite the best actresses of the industry from Kamini Kaushal to Nutan. The five actresses listed below – Nargis, Vyjayanthimala, Madhubala, Meena Kumari and Saira Banu – were all part of some of Kumar’s best pairings onscreen.

1. Dilip Kumar and Nargis

While Nargis is more well-known for her star pairing with Raj Kapoor, she acted with Dilip Kumar in seven films from Anokha Pyar (1948) to Deedar (1951). Of course, Andaz (1949), a love triangle with Nargis, Kumar and Raj Kapoor stands out for its casting coup. Kumar plays Dilip, a young man who falls in love with Nargis’s forward-thinking Neena, only to find out that she is already engaged to another man, Rajan (Kapoor). The misunderstanding in their relationships causes grievous harm to all involved.

In his autobiography, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, Kumar wrote, “Nargis was no doubt a very capable actress who was getting better with every film. I could see that she had improved vastly when we were cast in Mehboob Khan’s Andaz (1949).” The two also acted together in Kidar Sharma’s Jogan (1950) in which Kumar played by a sceptic who falls for a jogan played by Nargis. In 1951, the multi-starrer Deedar with Kumar, Nargis, Ashok Kumar and Nimmi was yet another tragic tale where Kumar is the recipient of unrequited love.

2. Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala

Like Nargis, Dilip Kumar acted with Vyjayanthimala in seven films - Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Madhumati (1958), Paigham (1959), Gunga Jumna (1961), Leader (1964), and Sunghursh (1968). But unlike his films with Nargis, his pairing with Vyjayanthimala was more well-known. He and Vyjayanthimala played Devdas-Chandramukhi, Anand-Madhumati and Gungaram-Dhanno in the more significant films of Kumar’s career.

Their onscreen chemistry was evident to all who view these films but the two firmly denied any rumours of an affair offscreen. The two last appeared with each other in Sunghursh (1968) and had a falling out during the making. They reportedly didn’t speak to one another for years even though they were on friendly terms with each other’s spouses.

3. Dilip Kumar and Madhubala

A long-time bachelor until he married Saira Banu in 1966 at age 44, Dilip Kumar was linked up with many of his co-stars in the industry including Madhubala. The two were reportedly close to getting married but when Madhubala backed out of the shooting of Naya Daur (1957) leading to a court case where Kumar spoke in defence of the producer, it caused a rift that took ages to heal. During the filming of K Asif’s Mughal-E-Azam (1960), they did not speak to each other off set. Onscreen, they created one of the most romantic scenes in Hindi cinema when Salim caresses Anarkali with a feather.

Of their early films (they acted together in only four films), Kumar said in his book, “I was able to attain that ease with Madhubala in Tarana (1951), which has remained, for many reasons, one of the films I would count among the memorable ones I have done in the early years of my career. She was a vivacious artiste and was so instantaneous in her responses that the scenes became riveting even when they were being filmed.”

4. Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari

Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari were both known for their for their tragic, melodramatic films and were unofficially known as the ‘Tragedy King’ and ‘Tragedy Queen’ of Indian cinema. In Azaad (1955) and Kohinoor (1960), the two appeared in relatively cheerful roles. Kumar himself admitted in his book, “I enjoyed the making of Kohinoor also for the camaraderie that grew between me and Meena Kumari after Azaad as we, who were known for our forte with emotional drama and tragedy, came together for another light-hearted film.” They also acted together in Foot Path (1953) and Yahudi (1958).

5. Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu

When Dilip Kumar finally settled down with Saira Banu, the couple had an age difference of 22 years. All his films with Saira, Gopi (1970), Sagina (1974) and Bairaag (1976), were filmed after their marriage. In fact, Kumar called the experience of shooting Gopi “an extended honeymoon” for the couple.

Kumar said of his young wife, “She co-starred with me in three films and I saw her tenacity and determination to get the nuances and emotional curves of the performance right. In the two other films we did together, she had to bring to life characters that bore no resemblance to her real self or anyone she knew.”
