Kalpana Kartik (born Mona Singha; 19 August 1931) is a retired Hindi film actress. She starred in six films in the 1950s. She is the widow of the late Hindi film actor and film maker Dev Anand.

Mona Singha was a beauty queen while studying at St. Bede's College, Shimla. She was introduced to films by Chetan Anand of Navketan Films with the film Baazi in 1951. She co-starred with Dev Anand, whom she worked with in all her subsequent films. Her screen name – Kalpana Kartik – was given to her by Chetan Anand during this period.^[1] Her other films were Aandhiyan (1952), Humsafar (1953), Taxi Driver (1954), House No. 44 (1954) and Nau Do Gyarah (1957).

Career[edit]

Mona Singha, aka Kalpana Kartik, was born in a Punjabi Christian family in Lahore.^[2] Her father was a Tehsildar of Batala in Gurdaspur District and she was the youngest of five brothers and two sisters. After the partition, her family moved to Shimla. She was a student of the St. Bede's College, Shimla. In her graduation year, she won the Ms. Shimla contest and was noticed by Chetan Anand, a film-maker from Bombay. He was there with his wife Uma Anand, whose mother is Mona's cousin.^[3] He convinced her family to allow her to join his fledgling film company, Navketan Films, as a leading lady. Thus, Mona Singha was re-christened Kalpana Kartik and she moved to Bombay (now known as Mumbai). Her first film Baazi was a huge success and went on to become a landmark in Indian cinema. Baazi was a gamble that defined the destinies of many luminaries all of whom got a career boost from the film.^{[citation needed]}

Kalpana Kartik, became a part of Navketan when it was beginning to spread its wings. She was associated with the film company during its most momentous years. She started with Baazi, the debut of Guru Dutt and ended with Nau Do Gyarah, the debut film of Vijay Anand. Between these two films came Taxi Driver, which was the 'coming of age' film of the Navketan banner. It was Navketan's first super-success and also the film on whose sets Dev Anand secretly married Kalpana Kartik during a lunch break. Kalpana's time in Navketan saw four different directors take reign - Guru Dutt, Chetan Anand, S. D. Burman and Vijay Anand.

Kalpana Kartik worked as an associate producer for Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), Shareef Budmaash (1973), Heera Panna (1973), and Jaaneman (1976). Dev Anand played the lead role in these movies.

Personal life[edit]

In 1954, Mona and Dev Anand got married secretly while on a break during the shooting of Taxi Driver.^[4][5] They became parents in 1956 when Suneil Anand was born. Suneil has also acted in films. They also have a daughter named Devina. After Nau Do Gyarah, Kalpana quit films to become a home maker. She was born into a Christian Family and she still practices her faith. After her marriage, she chose to stay away from the limelight and has been away from the media since then.^[6]

Olga Vladimirovna Baklanova (Russian: О́льга Влади́мировна Бакла́нова; 19 August 1893 – 6 September 1974), known professionally as Olga Baclanova, was a Russian actress, opera singer, and ballerina.^[1] She achieved prominence during the silent film era, after taking several years off her age and changing the spelling of her Russian surname from Baklanova. She was often billed under her last name only, as Baclanova, similarly to the surname-only nomenclature of her fellow countrywoman Nazimova.^[2][3][4]

An exotic blonde temptress, she was known as the "Russian Tigress". She emigrated to America in 1925, and started appearing in Hollywood films, which she remains most noted for portraying the fictional Duchess Josiana in the Universal Pictures silent The Man Who Laughs and evil circus trapeze artist Cleopatra in Tod Browning's cult horror movie Freaks (1932), which features a cast of actual carnival sideshow freaks. 

 

Early life, Moscow Arts Theatre and Russian career (radio, stage and film)

Olga Vladimirovna Baklanova was born on 19 August 1893 (other sources state 1884, 1896 or even 1900, according to her obituary) in Moscow, Russia.^[1][3] She was the daughter of Vladimir Baklanov and his wife Alexandra,^[3] herself an actress in early Russian films. She had 6 siblings, including later Soviet general and WWII hero Gleb Baklanov. Baclanova studied drama at the Cherniavsky Institute^[3] before being accepted into the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre with contemporaries such as Maria Ouspenskaya in 1912. Over the next decade she appeared in Russian films, and also performed extensively on stage, touring and performing in many countries of the world. In the 1930s, Baclanova had a program called Olga Baclanova's Continental Review, and she often appeared as a guest on radio programs singing songs in her native Russian, having trained in operatic voice at the Moscow Arts Theatre. In 1925 she was given the award "Merited Artist of the Republic", the highest Soviet artist honour. Baclanova appeared in around 17 films during her career in Russia.

American career

Baclanova first came to New York City with the 1925 touring production of the Moscow Art Theatre's Lysistrata. Though the rest of the company returned to Russia in 1926, she stayed in America.^[3] She would appear in a West Coast production of The Miracle, before being cast in a bit part in her debut film, The Dove. A statuesque blonde, Baclanova quickly established herself as a popular actress in American silent movies and achieved a notable success with The Docks of New York (1928), directed by Josef von Sternberg. Later that year, she also appeared in The Man Who Laughs as Duchess Josiana, the femme fatale love interest to Conrad Veidt's disfigured hero.

Baclanova in Freaks

The introduction of talking films proved difficult for Baclanova, as audiences did not respond to her heavy Russian accent. She no longer secured leading roles, and was relegated to supporting parts. Her career was in decline when she was offered the role of the cruel circus performer Cleopatra in Tod Browning's film Freaks^[5] (1932). This horror movie, which featured actual carnival freaks, was highly controversial and screened only briefly before being withdrawn. It would be 30 years before Freaks gained a cult following. The movie did not revive Baclanova's film career, which ended in 1943.

Baclanova worked extensively on stage in London's West End and in New York, for about 10 years starting in the mid-1930s. In 1943 she appeared in Claudia at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, Washington.

Personal life

Baclanova's father died of natural causes in 1922. She was married three times. Her first husband was a lawyer named Vladimir Zoppi with whom she had her first son. Her second husband was actor Nicholas Soussanin with whom she had her second son. The birth of her second son was front page news and was covered quite extensively in the press in 1930. Her third marriage was to Russian-born David Judovitch, better known as Richard Davis (1900–1984), who owned the Fine Arts Theatre in New York. In 1931, Baclanova became a naturalized American citizen.

Legacy

Olga's likeness to the American pop singer Madonna in the 1980s has been frequently mentioned as particularly evident in The Man Who Laughs.^[6]

In Russia, Baclanova's departure from the USSR is well remembered for its involuntary significant contribution to the unrivaled success of a Soviet movie star Lyubov Orlova, a struggling ex-pianist with a certain likeness to Olga. In 1926, Orlova was promoted from a choir, after two months in a theatre, by the heart-broken Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, a rumored lover and/or admirer of Baclanova, his favorite student.^[7] Fashion historian Alexander Vasilyev remembered in 2018: "He [Vladimir] loved her [Olga] in letters, he was thinking deeply about her. The only time he cried [publicly], at the piano in the Art Theatre foyer, was when he had found out about Olga Vladimirovna Baclanova [emigration]... He really began to cry. I'm sure of this, not because I was there but because I was a friend of Sophia Pilyavskaya [ru] who was also closely connected to Nemirovich-Danchenko and could have known this from the wife of the famous director... Lyubov Orlova blossomed as Baclanova's substitute."^[8]

Later years

After her retirement she migrated to Switzerland. She died at a rest home on 6 September 1974 in Vevey, Switzerland, aged 81, apparently suffering from Alzheimer's disease, although this is unconfirmed.^[1] She was interred at Corsier cemetery, in Corsier-sur-Vevey.

Born Olga Vladimirovna Baklanova, one of six children of Vladimir Baklanoff and his wife Alexandra, later billed as the Russian Tigress in her early talking films, was born August 19, 1893. She graduated from the Cherniavsky Institute in Moscow prior to her selection in 1912 at age 19 to apprentice at the Moscow Art Theatre. During her early years at M.A.T. (1914-1918) she appeared in perhaps 18 films bringing her into contact with Tourjansky, Boleslawski and M. Chekov among others. Her last Russian film, Bread (1918) was the first communist agitprop vehicle. From 1917 she appeared in the "classics" on the parent stage and at the M.A.T. First Studio. Her mentor, Nemirovich-Danchenko, showcased her in avant-garde productions of the newly created M.A.T. Musical Studio from 1920-1925. She was honored with the Worthy Artist Of The Republic by the Soviet regime.

Eight months after her M.A.T. New York debut in December 1925, she declined to return with the M.A.T. company to Russia and subsequently defected. She was noticed by the Hollywood studios while performing on stage in Los Angeles in The Miracle in the role of the nun. Her film debut was a bit in The Dove (1927). Her dramatic Portrayals in The Man Who Laughs (1928), Street of Sin (1928), The Docks of New York (1928) and Forgotten Faces (1928) brought her critical acclaim in 1928. Her subsequent vamp/tramp roles in early Paramount and Fox talking films nearly destroyed her promising start. Stagey mannerisms and a heavy accent relegated her to supporting roles. She appeared to advantage in three films at MGM including the infamous Freaks (1932) with an unrestrained and legendary performance.

After appearing in west coast stage productions in 1931-32, she permanently left for the Broadway stage in 1933 following one last film at Paramount. From 1933 to 1943 she starred in various Broadway productions and then toured in road companies of Cat And The Fiddle, Twentieth Century, Grand Hotel and Idiot's Delight. She debuted on the London stage in 1936 in Going Places. One last big role in Claudia (1943) kept her busy for two years (1941-1943). She returned to Hollywood in 1943 to recreate her stage role. Some summer stock and occasional night club appearances followed as she moved into retirement.

During the mid-1960s Olga was interviewed by Richard Lamparski, Kevin Brownlow and John Kobal who all recognized her unique contributions in the performing arts. Her death occurred at Vevey, Switzerland on September 6, 1974 after a period of declining health.

Personal life[edit]

Sumathi was born in Madurai a city in Tamil Nadu India. Her father and mother were originally from Madurai. Her father managed several businesses such as photo studio and printing press. Her mother, was a housewife taking care of Sumathi and her seven brothers and three sisters. Her elder brother Master Prabhakar was the first one in the family to enter the film industry.^[3][4]

In 1966, Sumathi moved in with her Aunt along with Prabhakar to pursue her dreams. Sumathi entered the film industry when a director was looking for a young baby to play a role in a Malayalam film along with veteran actor Bharath Gopi.

Sumathi is married and settled in America with their daughter and son.

Career[edit]

She started her film career in Tamil movies as a child actress (Baby Sumathi) by playing the role of daughter of Gopi in the late 60's. She appeared in many children's movies. She played dual roles and in some movies acted as a boy. Soon she moved to Telugu and Malayalam films, where she starred in many films.

As Baby Sumathi grew up, she took to modeling and started endorsing many products. She has won many Nandi and Filmfare awards as a child. She acted many films with her third elder brother Master Prabhakar and second younger brother Kumar. As soon as her brothers entered the film industry, most of her family members were interested to go on the same line. Sumathi's cousin was a well known actress who was successful in various Tamil films. Sumathi's other cousins were cinematography and assistant directors. Sumathi also dubbed for many actresses in the past in many languages.

In her acting career, she was often stereotyped as the girl next door. She acted with many stars such as M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Jaya Bachchan, Manorama, Nagesh, Rajinikanth, Jayalalithaa, Ambika, and Bhagyaraj to name a few. Her debut film, as heroine, was Bhagyaraj's directorial debut; Suvarillatha Chithirangal (1979) in Tamil. She gave up her acting career at the peak after her marriage in 1989 to move to America.

சுமதி (தமிழ்: சுமதி) (பிறப்பு 19 ஆகஸ்ட் 1964) தமிழ்நாட்டின் மதுரையைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு இந்திய நடிகை. அவள் இரண்டு வயதில் தனது வாழ்க்கையைத் தொடங்கினாள். அவர் பல தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, மலையாளம், கன்னடம் மற்றும் இந்தி மொழி படங்களில் நடித்தார்

தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கை [தொகு]

சுமதி இந்தியாவில் மதுரையில் பிறந்தார். அவளுடைய அப்பாவும் அம்மாவும் மதுரையைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள். அவளுடைய தந்தை போட்டோ ஸ்டுடியோ மற்றும் பிரிண்டிங் பிரஸ் போன்ற பல தொழில்களை நிர்வகித்தார். அவரது தாயார், சுமதி மற்றும் அவரது ஏழு சகோதரர்கள் மற்றும் மூன்று சகோதரிகளை கவனித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த இல்லத்தரசி. அவரது மூத்த சகோதரர் மாஸ்டர் பிரபாகர் குடும்பத்தில் முதலில் திரைப்படத் துறையில் நுழைந்தார். 1966 ஆம் ஆண்டில், சுமதி தனது அத்தையுடன் பிரபாகருடன் தனது கனவுகளைத் தொடர சென்றார். மூத்த நடிகர் பரத் கோபியுடன் மலையாளப் படத்தில் ஒரு கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடிக்க இளம் குழந்தையைத் தேடும் போது சுமதி திரைப்படத் துறையில் நுழைந்தார்.

சுமதி திருமணமாகி அமெரிக்காவில் தனது மகள் மற்றும் மகனுடன் குடியேறினார்.

அவர் 60 களின் பிற்பகுதியில் கோபியின் மகள் வேடத்தில் நடித்ததன் மூலம் குழந்தை நட்சத்திரமாக (குழந்தை சுமதி) தமிழ் திரைப்படங்களில் தனது திரைப்பட வாழ்க்கையைத் தொடங்கினார். அவர் பல குழந்தைகள் திரைப்படங்களில் தோன்றினார். அவர் இரட்டை வேடங்களில் நடித்தார் மற்றும் சில திரைப்படங்களில் சிறுவனாக நடித்தார். விரைவில் அவர் தெலுங்கு மற்றும் மலையாள படங்களுக்கு சென்றார், அங்கு அவர் பல படங்களில் நடித்தார்.

குழந்தை சுமதி வளர வளர, அவர் மாடலிங் செய்து பல தயாரிப்புகளுக்கு ஒப்புதல் அளிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அவர் குழந்தையாக பல நந்தி மற்றும் பிலிம்பேர் விருதுகளை வென்றுள்ளார். அவர் தனது மூன்றாவது மூத்த சகோதரர் மாஸ்டர் பிரபாகர் மற்றும் இரண்டாவது தம்பி குமார் ஆகியோருடன் பல படங்களில் நடித்தார். அவளுடைய சகோதரர்கள் திரைப்படத் துறையில் நுழைந்தவுடன், அவளுடைய பெரும்பாலான குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் ஒரே வரிசையில் செல்ல ஆர்வம் காட்டினர். சுமதியின் உறவினர் நன்கு அறியப்பட்ட நடிகை, அவர் பல்வேறு தமிழ் படங்களில் வெற்றி பெற்றார். சுமதியின் மற்ற உறவினர்கள் ஒளிப்பதிவு மற்றும் உதவி இயக்குனர்கள். சுமதி கடந்த காலங்களில் பல நடிகைகளுக்கு பல மொழிகளில் டப்பிங் செய்தார்.

அவரது நடிப்பு வாழ்க்கையில், அவர் அடிக்கடி பக்கத்து வீட்டுப் பெண்ணாக ஒரே மாதிரியாக இருந்தார். எம்.ஜி.ராமச்சந்திரன், சிவாஜி கணேசன், ஜெமினி கணேசன், ஜெயா பச்சன், மனோரமா, நாகேஷ், ரஜினிகாந்த், ஜெயலலிதா, அம்பிகா மற்றும் பாக்யராஜ் போன்ற பல நட்சத்திரங்களுடன் அவர் நடித்தார். அவரது முதல் படம், கதாநாயகியாக, பாக்யராஜின் இயக்கத்தில் அறிமுகமானது; சுவரில்லாத சித்திரங்கள் (1979) தமிழில். அவர் 1989 இல் திருமணத்திற்குப் பிறகு தனது நடிப்புத் தொழிலை அமெரிக்காவுக்குக் கைவிட்டார்.
