நூதன் பால் (Nutan Bahl) (நாதன் சமாரத், 4 சூன் 1936 - 21 பெப்ரவரி 1991) என்பவர் ஓர் இந்திய திரைப்பட நடிகையாவார். இவரது திரை வாழ்க்கை கிட்டத்தட்ட நாற்பது ஆண்டுகள் ஆகும். 70 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பாலிவுட் படங்களில் நட்சத்திர நடிகையாகவே தோன்றியுள்ளார்.[1][2] இந்தியத் திரைப்படத்துறை வரலாற்றில் போற்றப்படக் கூடிய ஒரு நடிகையாகவே கருதப்படுகிறார்.[3] பிலிம்பேர் வழங்கிய சிறந்த நடிகைக்கான விருது உட்பட ஐந்து விருதுகளை கொண்டுள்ளார், 30 ஆண்டுகள் திரை வாழ்க்கையில் இவர் பெற்ற விருதுகளை, 2011 இல் இவரது உறவினரான நடிகை கஜோல் சமன் செய்தார்.[4] 1974 ஆம் ஆண்டு, இந்திய அரசு இவருக்கு பத்மஸ்ரீ விருது வழங்கியது.

குமார் சென் சமாரத் மற்றும் சோபனா சமாரத் ஆகியோரின் மகளும், திரைப்பட நடிகையுமான நூதன் தன்னுடைய 14 வது வயதில் நடிக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். அவரது தாயார் இயக்கிய "ஹமாரி பேட்டி" (1950) என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் அறிமுகமாகிய இவர், அதைத் தொடர்ந்து, 1950 இல் "நாகினா" மற்றும் "ஹம் லோக்" போன்ற படங்களில் தோன்ற

ஆரம்பித்தார். 1955 ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த "சீமா" என்ற படத்தில் இவரது பாத்திரம் மிகப் பெரிய வரவேற்பைப் பெற்றது. அது அவருக்கு சிறந்த நடிகைக்கான பிலிம்பேர் விருதினையும் பெற்றுத் தந்தது. 1960 முதல் 1970களின் பிற்பகுதி வரை தொடர்ந்து நடித்து வந்த சுஜாதா (1959), பாந்தினி (1963), மிலன் (1967) மற்றும் மேய்ன் துள்சி தேரே ஆங்கன் கி (1978) போன்ற படங்களில் நடித்ததனால் தொடர்ந்து நான்கு விருதுகளைப் பெற்றுள்ளார். 1980களில் இவர் குணசித்திர வேடங்களில் நடிக்க ஆரம்பித்து அவர் இறக்கும் வரை நடித்து வந்தார். சாஜன் தி சகேலி (1981), மேரி ஜங் (1985) மற்றும் நாம் (1986) போன்ற படங்கள் உட்பட இவர் பெரும்பாலும் தாயார் வேடத்திலேயே நடித்துள்ளார். மேரி ஜங் படத்தில் நடித்ததற்காக சிறந்த துணை நடிகைக்கான ஆறாவது மற்றும் கடைசி பிலிம்பேர் விருது இவருக்கு கிடைத்தது.

நூதன் மார்பகப் புற்றுநோய் காரணமாக 1991 ஆம் ஆண்டு இறந்தார். நூதன் கடற்படை அதிகாரி லெட்டினன்ட் கமாண்டர் ரஜனிஷ் பால் என்பவரை 1959 ஆம் ஆண்டு திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். இவர்களுக்கு மோக்னீஷ் பால் என்ற ஒரு மகனும் உள்ளார். இவர் பின்னர் தொலைக்காட்சியிலும், திரைப்படங்களிலும் நடிகரானார். நூதனின் இறப்பினால் இவர்களது 30 வருட திருமண வாழ்க்கை முடிவுற்றது.

ஆரம்ப வாழ்க்கை

மராத்திய சந்திரசேனிய கயாஸ்த பிரபு என்ற குடும்பத்தில் இயக்குநரும் கவிஞருமான குமார் சென் சமார்த் மற்றும் அவரது மனைவியும் நடிகையுமான சோபனா என்பவர்களுக்கு பிறந்த நான்கு குழந்தைகளில் மூத்தவராக 1936 சூன் 4 அன்று நூதன் பிறந்தார். அவரது சிறு வயதில் தன்னுடைய நிறத்தைப் பற்றியும், அழகைப் பற்றியும் ஒரு தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையுடன் வளர்ந்து வந்தார்.[5][6][7] நடிகை தனுஜா மற்றும் சதுரா என்ற இரு சகோதரிகளும், ஜெய்தீப் என்ற சகோதரனும் உண்டு. ஜெய்தீப் பிறப்பிற்கு முன்னரே இவரது பெற்றோர்கள் பிரிந்து விட்டனர். நூதன் பஞ்சாங்கி புனித சூசையப்பர் கான்வென்டில் படித்துள்ளார்.[8] 1953 இல் மேல் படிப்பிற்காக ஸ்விட்சர்லாந்து சென்றார். இவர் நடித்த திரைப்படம் தோல்வி கண்டவுடன் இவரது தாயாரின் கட்டளைப்படி இவர் சென்றதாகவும், அங்கு தான் இருந்த ஒரு வருடம் தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையின் மிக மகிழ்ச்சியான தருணமிது என நூதன் தெரிவித்தார்.[9]

சொந்த வாழ்க்கை

நூதன் கடற்படை அதிகாரி லெட்டினன்ட் கமாண்டர் ரஜனிஷ் பால் என்பவரை 1959 இல் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். இவர்களுக்கு மோக்னீஷ் பால் என்ற ஒரு மகன் பிறந்தார். பின்னர் இவர் தொலைக் காட்சியிலும், திரைப்படங்களிலும் நடிகரானார்.வேட்டையாடுவது இவருக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும்.[10]

இறப்பு

1990 இல் நூதனுக்கு மார்பகப் புற்றுநோய் இருப்பதை அறிந்து அதற்கான சிகிச்சைகளை மேற்கொண்டார்.[11] அவரது உடல் நிலை மோசமானதால் 1991 பிப்ரவரியில், மும்பையில் உள்ள ஒரு தனியார் மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கக் பட்டார். அந்த சமயத்தில் கர்ஜனா மற்றும் இன்சானியாத் போன்ற படங்களில் நடித்து வந்தார். இவர் (இந்திய நேரப்படி) பிப்ரவரி 21, 1991 ஆம் ஆண்டு பிற்பகல் 12.07 மணிக்கு இறந்தார்.[12] அவரது கணவர் தன்னுடைய வீட்டில் ஏற்பட்ட ஒரு தீ விபத்தில் 2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு இறந்தார்.[13]

June Elizabeth Millarde (July 6, 1922 – May 21, 1991), better known as Toni Seven, was an American cover girl and actress.

Early life

Millarde was born in July 1922 in New York City, the only child of actress June Caprice and film director Harry F. Millarde. She was eight years old when her father died and fourteen when her mother died. She was latterly raised by her grandparents, the Peter Lawsons, in Long Island, New York. The June 17, 1949 issue of Time magazine reported she was the heiress to an estimated $3,000,000 fortune.[citation needed]

Actress

In the early 1940s she appeared in minor roles in three films. Her screen debut came in Miss Seventeen, a production of Producers Releasing Corporation. With the advent of World War II, she was one of the many volunteers at the Hollywood Canteen.

She changed her name to Toni Seven in June 1944 so that she could sign her name Toni 7. Publicity man Russ Birdwell conceived the Seven name. Seven was accompanied to Los Angeles Superior Court by attorney Jerry Giesler, when she petitioned that her name be changed. Seven was tested for a contract by film producer Hunt Stromberg and received a large buildup in military service publications. In August 1944 Seven was receiving five hundred letters weekly from fans.

Model

Seven was part of the first pin-up exhibition ever held in the United States. She was joined by screen stars Jane Russell and Martha Tilton in an event which included life-size photos of the actresses. The show, which included autograph sessions and personal appearances, began on November 26, 1944. The locale was the Hollywood U.S.O. at 1531 North Cahuenga Boulevard, Los Angeles, California.

The Society of Photographic Illustrators voted Seven's legs the best among actresses' anatomical features, which when combined, would compose the perfect model. Actresses who were selected in the poll included Miriam Hopkins (lips), Paulette Goddard (bust), and Betty Grable (hips). The cameramen announced their choices in May 1946.

Theater

In 1946, Broadway producer W. Horace Schmidlapp planned a revival of Accent On Youth by Samson Raphaelson. The theatrical presentation was to feature Seven in a leading role. In 1947, Seven sold her Benedict Canyon home and moved to New York City.

Personal life

In January 1949 newspapers linked her romantically with U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson. The Washington senator was forty-three years old and described as the most eligible bachelor in the United States Capitol.[1] Seven was pursued in Paris, France by Peruvian playboy Alfredo Carreo, in 1949. She reassumed the name June Millarde in 1959. That year she planned a June wedding to Eric Stanley of Washington, D.C..

Seven died on May 21, 1991 at the age of 68.[2][3]

Toni Seven is proof that a girl who lands in Hollywood, has money to burn, a great press agent and more than enough beauty, can still end up a complete unknown. Toni tried to attain stardom several times, and the second time, an extensive campaign to catapult her to stardom was coined by PR guru Russell Birdwell, but she just crashed and burned pretty soon. What a waste! Toni truly was a beautiful woman and probably had some talent in her. Too bad too much publicity killer her.

EARLY LIFE

June Elizabeth Millarde was born on July 6, 1922, in New York City, to Henry F. Millarde and Helen Elizabeth Lawson. Her mother was professionally known as June Caprice, an actress of major prominence in Hollywood, and her father was an successful movie director. His most famous movie was If Winter comes, from 1916. By the time she was born, her parents had amassed quite a fortune and retired from active movie work. June grew up in Long Island, and attended school at Great Neck, Long Island.

On November 2, 1931, June’s father died from a heart attack, aged only 45. June was raised by her mother form them on, but sadly the elder June succumbed to a heart attack while fighting cancer in 1936. The 14 year old June was left in the care of her maternal grandparents in Long Island.

While June was materially well of, as a heiress of a considerable fortune (rumored to have been 3 million dollars), she wanted to act not for the fortune but for the fame. She moved to the West Coast after graduating from high school, and undertook extensive dramatic training before deciding to crash movies.

June signed with MGM in 1941, owning of course to her late parents friendship with producer Bob Leonard. Unfortunately, she left Metro after just a month, unhappy how they only posed her to leg art. She signed with Warner Bros and started her career anew.

CAREER

Pretty slim! Toni appeared in only five movies, although I have to say they are 5 decent movies at least! Her first movie was We Were Dancing, based on a Noel Coward play. When i say based on a Noel Coward play, it means it’s a witty, sparkling, lightweight fare. And this movie is just that. don’t look for deeper, hidden meanings and something profound. Norma Shearer is delightful int he leading role. Coward + Norma = a good combo. Some people would disagree with me, but heck, Norma was perfect for sophisticated, drawing room comedies. Here she is ably supported by Mervyn Douglas, Gail Patrick and Lee Bowman.

She then followed it with Yankee Doodle Dandy, one of the best musicals to come out of her 1940s. Jimmy Cagney, what more do you need? Toni’s last movie under her Warner Bros contract was Wings for the Eagle, a love triangle set amidst  Southern California aircraft production in WWII. The lovers? Ann Sheridan, Denis Morgan and Jack Carson. What ca I say, I’m a sucker for Ann, she was such a luminous actress, but I am not a fan of either Crason or Morgan, so for me, it’s a skip.

Aware that her career went nowhere fast, Toni hired Russel Birdwell and tried anew (again!). The result were only two movies – Ladies Courageous and Once Upon a Time. While not the bottom of the waist basket quality, they are far from good solid movies that Toni needed to build a career. Ladies courageous is a weird, weird, anti feminist movie (despite the more than a decent cast – ). Once upon a time is one of the lesser Cary Grant movies – it’s a movie with a strange kind of charm, unusual story (A cash-strapped theater producer promotes a nine-year-old boy’s dancing caterpillar) and features the stunning Janet Blair as Cary’s leading lady, but it’s not top tier movie making and it did little favors to anyone involved.

Toni gave up her career and publicity campaign and settled in Washington DC after this.  

PRIVATE LIFE

This is where Toni shines. If she is at all remembered today, it is because of her private life, not her slim movie career.

Toni was 5 feet, four and a half inched tall, weighted about 108 lbs, was a great horsewoman who rode frequently, and was also a good swimmer and tennis player. She disliked gossipy women, bad movies and prize fights.

In march 1943, she was just one of the many girls that dated Errol Flynn. She also banked heavily on her parents’ fame. A quote from a newspaper:

“Director Al Hall is giving June Millarde a break in “My Client Curly,” the Cary Grant-Janet Blair . The person who gave Al his first acting role role was Harry Millarde, June’s ‘ father, who was king bee on the old ‘Fox lot and frequently directing June Caprice (June’s mother). As time went by Al gave up his acting ambitions and became a director, but he never forgot the Millardes. So when their ‘ daughter June was up for a role in ; “Curly,” Al directed the test and saw she got the best cameraman at Columbia.”

In 1944, Toni hired Russell Birdwell to become her press agent. Birdwell was a wildly oscillating guy. While he had major success with Jane Russell (and her bust and bra) and the search for Scarlett O’Hara (he was the brain behind this superb publicity stunt) most of his other “finds” ended up complete unknowns after a period of intense publicity frenzy. And he really tried with Toni, he really did. It just didn’t pay. For instance, Toni posed with a mama cat that gave birth to a litter of kitten with 7 toes on their paws. She also posed with a man’s black shirt, claiming she uses them as nightgowns. On the right ear she wears nothing; on the left, a large gold loop, and in the center of it, a cut out 7! She made bread with exactly 7 ingredients. She wore earrings with 7 precious stones dangling from them. Her phone number ended in 7. You get the picture…

She was supposed to star in a revue by Fort Ord, but nothing came out of it. She was very active in the war effort, going to rallies, signing pictures. Birdwell sent thousands of her pictures to the GI-as around the world – she was named the most popular pin up for the boys in the European Theater in 1945. Her photos could be found on obscure Pacific islands where there was literary nothing else!

Toni Seven has bought herself a little house in Benedict canyon. By her own admission, she knows nothing about antiques, yet is furnishing it exclusively in early American stuff.

In March 1945, Toni and five other starlets staged a strip poker session at the United National Clothing Drive. The other starlets were Ann Miller, Evelyn Ankers, Nina Foch and Renee de Marco. They all had better careers than Toni (even De Marco, who did not have a great movie career). She was also good friend with starlet Frances Vorne, who also posed for Yank. They often threw big dinner parties for their swains.

In early 1946, Toni went back to her old moniker, but still remained an active pin up girl – her legs were claimed to have been “perfect” by a lieu of eminent photographers.

By 1948, June was out of Hollywood, out of movies, and living of her inheritance. She entered a hospital in October 1948 for a serious operation, and was recuperating in November 1948 in Hollywood.

Then, she was again back in the newspaper fold. How? Love! In January 1949, a certain senator Warren Magnuson, the famous lothario of Washington and a very sought after bachelor, missed the opening of Congress. Why? Because he was allegedly with Toni! There was much press furor re over the fact. His friend kindly noted to the press that Warren had been doing the Seattle nightspots with Toni for some time now. However, in September 1949 she sailed for Europe, and was beaued by Peruvian playboy, Alfredo Carreo.

More about Warren, who ended one of the most meaningful men in Toni’s life. He was born on April 12, 1905, in Minnesota, and was adopted by the Magnuson family (due to his surname, he was known as Maggie to friends). He attended college in Seattle, Washington, and settled there permanently. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a U.S. Representative (1937–1944) and a U.S. Senator from 1944. In 1928, he was married to Eleanor Peggy “Peggins” Maddieux, but they divorced in 1935. Warren dated all around the States from then on, escorting women like actress Carole Parker and Austine McDonnell.

Toni and the senator dated on off from 1948 until 1953, although some papers pin them together in 1955. It is known that the senator married in 1964 to a Seattle widow, Jermaine Peralta, and thus he obviously never married Toni. Toni gave up her career (which is not saying much) to cater to Warren. She acted as his hostess at social functions, they traveled around a great deal, often visiting Hawaii. Warren’s close friends said that Toni was absolutely loyal to Warren, but liked to drink to much. Warren also had a weakness for vodka – it seems they were well matched here (sadly!).

I sympathize with Toni on this one. She obviously wanted to get married and talked constantly to the press about her upcoming nuptials, but the senator  rebuffed her every time, until they were done. I have no idea why they broke up – but I can only guess. Maybe Toni had had enough? Maybe Warren passed onto another woman? He later romanced Monique van Vooren, another luscious starlet. He died on May 20, 1989 in Seattle, Washington. His wife died in 2011.

In 1952, Toni was seen with Hank Fisher, of the “Joe Palooka” fame.

In 1959, it was reported that June was to marry Eric Stanley, prominent in the art circles, that June. I could not find any information that proved this as a fact. She then completely falls of the radar.

June Elizabeth Millarde died in 1991.

The film, which became her maiden Tamil release, was panned by critics and went completely unnoticed,[7][8] while Amala's role was being labelled as 'minimal',[7] and she later cited that she regretted doing the film and many of her scenes were edited out.[6] Amala then went on to work in Samy's controversial Sindhu Samaveli (2010), portraying the role of Sundari, who has an illicit relationship with her father-in-law. 

The director of the film had previously drawn criticism for his depictions of illicit romances as well as for assaulting his previous lead actress in a film, but Amala played down the issue citing that she had no problem with the director.[6] She was approached after the major portions of her next release, Mynaa were ready and signed on before listening to the entirety of the story, claiming that she was shocked but not upset with the controversial scenes which she heard later.[6] Upon release, the film met with contrasting reviews, whilst some critics refused to give the film a rating, declaring their disgust at the film's plot.[9][10] Amala's performance won her critical acclaim. However her success was marred with extreme reactions from the public, with Amala claiming she received death threats from anonymous callers and was publicly scolded by women at a cinema hall in Chennai.[11]

2010s[edit source]

Amala's next release, the romantic drama film Mynaa (2010) by Prabhu Solomon, made her a recognised actress in the industry. The film had garnered much anticipation prior to release, with noted distributors Udhayanidhi Stalin and Kalpathi S. Aghoram purchasing the rights of the film after being impressed with it.[12] Amala played the village belle Mynaa, attaining unanimous praise from critics for her portrayal; a critic labelled her work as "outstanding" and that she put in a "riveting performance",[13] while other reviews claimed she had "immense talent" and scores in "every instance" in the title role.[14] The film, which also saw her gain recognition from noted actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, subsequently became a large commercial success at the box-office.[12] Amala gained recognition from several award committees and notably secured the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress, while also gaining nominations in the Best Actress category at the Filmfare Awards and the Vijay Awards.

Following the success of Mynaa, Amala became touted as the "new top star of 2011" as she subsequently signed on to several prominent projects.[5] Her first release of 2011 was in a supporting role in the Malayalam drama film, Ithu Nammude Katha, a remake of the successful Tamil film Naadodigal and the second was meant to be her launch in Tamil films, the coming-to-age tale of five friends Vikadakavi with the film opening to limited screens. Both films opened to limited screens due to the moderate budget of the projects, with her performance in the latter being described as "full of potential".[15] She went on to sign three big budget films with established production houses, with the drama Deiva Thirumagal directed by Vijay, featuring her opposite Vikram and alongside Anushka,[16] becoming her next release. Her portrayal of school correspondent Shwetha Rajendran won critical acclaim with a reviewer citing that her "expressive eyes help her leave a mark in a small but important role" whilst another critic claimed she "acquits herself well".[17][18] Her final release of 2011 was Ram Gopal Varma's Bejawada which marked her début in Telugu language films. The film saw her portray college girl, Geetanjali, and featured her opposite Naga Chaitanya, but the film opened to negative reviews and became a surprise box office failure.[19]

Amala's first release of 2012 was in Linguswamy's multi-starring action entertainer, Vettai, alongside Arya, Madhavan and Sameera Reddy.[16] The film opened to critical and commercial acclaim with The New York Times claiming the film "entertains without breaking any new ground, though it can also surprise".[20] Amala won mixed feedback for her performance; while the critic from Sify mentioned she "is lovely to look at and her feisty performance proves that a star is born",[21] Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff cited she "struts, pouts and hams to the hilt".[22] The actress had three films released on the Valentine's Day weekend of 2012, with Balaji Mohan's bilingual Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi and Love Failure becoming critical and commercial successes. The film, made in Tamil and Telugu, featured her alongside Siddharth and portrayed as her college girl, Parvathi, showing her romantic skills. About the Tamil version, a reviewer from The Hindu wrote: "Amala Paul, after coming across as convincing in her last few movies, looks finally set as a leading lady", while another critic labelled that she "comes across as natural" and "it is a pleasure to see her in a role and costumes that suit her age as compared to her recent movies".[23][24] Rediff.com called the Telugu version of the film "refreshing", highlighting that the lead pair's on-screen chemistry "sparkles".[25] The romantic thriller Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal opposite Adharvaa, also released on the same day in which she played Charulatha, a modern girl based in Bangalore. The film won mixed reviews, though the lead pair's on-screen chemistry was praised by critics, while another reviewer noted that "Amala renders an effortless act".[26][27] She played a notable role in renowned director Dr. Biju's Aakashathinte Niram, which was her first art-house film. The film was screened at the competition section for the Golden Goblet Award in the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival. She paired with veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal in the film Run Babby Run in which she played the role of a senior news channel editor. The film was a big commercial success[28] and her performance as well as her chemistry with Mohanlal were highly appreciated.[29]

In 2013, Amala achieved her first commercial success in Telugu cinema. Her first release in 2013, V. V. Vinayak's directorial Naayak, opposite Ram Charan Teja, went on to be one of the biggest critical as well as commercial success of the year.[30] Her next film was Puri Jagannadh's romantic comedy Iddarammayilatho opposite Allu Arjun. Upon release, Amala's performance was appreciated by the critics. Sangeetha Devi Dundroo of The Hindu commented "Amala Paul manages to pull off a character that traverses a thin line between being naïve and downright silly. We wish we saw more of her."[31] Another reviewer, Sasidhar AS from The Times of India commented "Amala Paul's characterisation is a delight, and she plays Komali so effectively that you'll be left wondering who else could have done the role better than her. She was a perfect choice to play a traditional Telugu girl."[32] She was later seen in A. L. Vijay's action entertainer,Thalaivaa opposite Vijay, as a police officer.[33] Her last release of the year was the Malayalam film Oru Indian Pranayakatha.[34] The film was a blockbuster at the Kerala box office and she received several awards for her character Irena including the SIIMA Award for Best Actress – Malayalam consecutively for two years.

In 2014, her first release was Samuthirakani's Nimirndhu Nil opposite Jayam Ravi,[35] which was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Janda Pai Kapiraju, in which Nani reprised the role of Jayam Ravi.[36] Her next release Velaiyilla Pattathari opposite Dhanush was a success in Tamil Nadu and her performance was appreciated.

In 2015, she appeared in Rajesh Pillai's Mili playing the titular role. Her performance in the film was critically acclaimed. She then went on to act with Mohanlal for the second time in Lailaa O Lailaa. Even though it was a big budget film, it didn't perform well in theatres. In 2016, she signed four Malayalam films – 2 Penkuttikal, Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum, Ore Mugham and Thoppil Joppan but left the later two projects due to conflicting schedule. Amala also appeared in a Tamil film Amma Kanakku playing the mother of a 15-year old. She will be making her Kannada debut in the film Hebbulli opposite Sudeep.Hebbuli became a great success in karnataka box office. Later she acted in Malayalam film achayans with Jayaram which is released in 2017 may and became an average success at box office.Now 6 movies of Amala is going to release in 2017-2018 which includes 2 Malayalam films and 4 Tamil films.

Personal life[edit source]

Amala was born in a Christian family[37][38] at Ernakulam, Kerala to Paul Varghese and Annice Paul.[39] Her brother Abijith Paul, also appeared in films following Amala's entry into the film industry. After completing her schooling from Nirmala Higher Secondary School Aluva.[40][41] She took a sabbatical to begin a career in films, but has since joined St. Teresa's College in Kochi, to pursue a B.A. degree in English.[16][42] Her father had been strictly against Amala pursuing an acting career, but was forced to accept her decision with her brother, Abijith Paul, strongly backing her ambition.[16] She later claimed she had performing arts in her, revealing that her mother was a singer and her dad was into theatre in college.[43] Amala had changed her on-screen name to Anakha, on director Samy's insistence, who cited that another actress, Amala had already made her name popular. However, after the failure of her 2011 movie Sindhu Samaveli, she reverted to her birth name since she felt that the replacement had brought her bad luck.[16]

As early as 2011, when Amala was working on Deiva Thirumagal, she was romantically linked to director A. L. Vijay but denied that the pair were dating.[44] The pair subsequently fell in love and announced in early 2014, that they were set to get married by mid 2014. On 7 June 2014 she got engaged to Vijay at Aluva in Kochi.[45] The couple got married on 12 June 2014 at Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar Hall, Chennai.[46][47] In 2016, Amala and Vijay filed for a divorce after her in laws did not agree.[48][49] They were granted divorce on February 2017.
