Mini Bio (1)

Helen O'Hara was born on November 8, 1922 in Los Angeles, California, USA. She was an actress, known for The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), The Jolson Story (1946) and Night and Day (1946). She died on October 26, 1999 in Orange, California.

Trivia (5)

Daughter of Henry Clive

Married name: Helen O. Patty.

Her father was Australian-born illustrator and magician Henry Clive, who, at the time, worked in the movie industry. Her mother, Helen Cunningham, was a former Ziegfeld follies dancer.

At 6 foot, she was taller than most Hollywood starlets.

Chorus girl, spotted by dance director Leroy Prinz and subsequently signed by Warner Brothers in March 1943.

Back when most actresses were petite and barely reached the shoulders of the leading man, Helen O’Hara was the archetype of a wild and untamed amazon, being over 6 feet tall but still possessing a lean, compact figure. Sadly, all that is out of the norm gets squashed quickly in Hollywood (kudos to the people who were different and managed to maintain both that difference and their careers to the end), and there was no place for a girl of her caliber in the Hollywood hierarchy, leading her to an early career demise.

EARLY LIFE:

Helen Mae Clive O’Hara was born on November 8, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. Her father was the famous illustrator Henry Clive, who was born in Australia, acted as a magician and at the time worked for the movie industry. Her mother, Helen Cunningham, was the former Ziegfeld follies dancer and actress. Her parents divorced prior to 1930s, and she grew up in Los Angeles, in an artistic environment due to her parents. She attended high school there, and was serious about dancing since she was a girl.

Helene went to the East Coast in about 1940 to become a chorus girl. She became quite successful at it too, having stints at the Earl Carroll showroom and at the Florentine gardens. She ended up an movie actress after dance director Leroy Printz spotted her in a restaurant while she was visiting Warner Brothers lot in Hollywood and arranged a specialty role for her in a musical. She won a contract with MGM along with six other tall girls in March 1943.

CAREER:

Helen’s bout of uncredited features is quite predictable and repetitive. If an actress appears in movies in minor roles and thus has no huge impact on the industry in general, at least it would be better if she were to appear in a diverse palette of features cutting though several genres and acting with different brand of actors. That is what I consider to be an impressive extras careers (Bess Flowers, for instance, had a great career for an minor support actress, she acted in all kinds of movies with a huge number of stars). Helen, sadly, did not have one.

glamaHelen started out fine is you like musicals, by appearing in Bathing Beauty , Two Girls and a SailorThank Your Lucky Stars , Thousands Cheer.  She was typecast early in this genre because of her height, as she could only get by as a chorus girl or a dancer.

Helen could have passed the rest of her career playing showgirls in musicals. Then, luckily for her, the direction of the movies she appeared in took a sharp turn. She appeared in two serious, if offbeat dramas, Nob Hill (for which she was lended to 20th century Fox) and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Just as she was to gradate to some more diverse movies, she was again huddled into musicals, and by the end of her career, she made The Jolson StoryNight and Day , Slightly Scandalous, and Ziegfeld Follies.

When we sum it up in the end, Helen does have the honor of appearing in a impressive number of MGM golden age musicals, but it proved to be her undoing, and she left the movies in 1946 after her marriage, obviously not taken seriously by the industry. While her height is to blame partially, Dorothy Ford (another very tall gal) proved that you could be an 6 foot amazon and still have an impressive list of uncredited performances.

PRIVATE LIFE:

Helen’s height was the constant publicity gimmick used in promoting her. Standing about 6 foot 5, Helen was truly an Amazon, and this was always the focal point of whatever article she appeared in, or the fact that her father is the famous illustrator Henry Clive. Her name was over connected to several other Amazon actresses, like Dorothy FordBunny Walters, and so on. There are literary dozens of articles with Helen posing next to a measuring pole to prove she was that tall. She was been called the highest woman under contract in Hollywood at one time in 1943.

$(KGrHqRHJDoFITKLOMCsBSKROUFGpQ~~60_57Helen’s first serious beau was the dancer Paul Pierce, when they were both in the Earl Carroll show, in 1941. The relationship probably ended when she went to Hollywood. She had a short fling with Jimmy Stewart while he was on an army furlong.

In September 1943, she was engaged to Maurice Hill, then an army private and former Broadway dancer. He flew in from New York, proposed to her, and she accepted. For undisclosed reasons, the wedding never took place.

In 1945, Helen went to the opening of Copacabana in Rio de Janero, Brazil, and stayed there for several months, having a very good time.

Helen’s first husband was Willis Goldbeck, screenwriter and former journalist whose claims to fame was the Dr. Kildare series of movies for MGM. He also dabbled as a director and sometime producer. Willis’ former flame was the stunning but ultimately tragic Garbo wannabe, Gwili Andre, whom he dated for years in 1930s.

Her own father married another starlet, Burnu Acquanetta, in 1951. It was his sixth and last marriage. He died in 1960 at age 79.

Helen retired from he movies after the wedding, and was active in the civic culture around Los Angeles, giving speeches and lectures. She and Goldbeck divorced in July 1955, with Helen getting 12,000$ dollars in settlement and their car.

Helen’s second husband was Henry Thompson, whom she married secretly on April 14, 1956. I could not find any records of the union nor who Thompson was. Their children were Christopher Clive Thompson born January 15, 1957 and Diana Hayner Thompson born October 16, 1961. Helen and Henry divorced in the early 1970’s.

Helen married Frank L. Patty, born in 1907, on March 17, 1975, in Los Angeles. Patty was born on February 1, 1908 in South Carolina, but has been a Los Angeles resident from the 1930s. He was married before to Joy Patty, who died in November 1973. The couple lived in Santa Monica.

Frank Patty died on November 1, 1994. Helen remained in Santa Monica and didn’t remarry.

Helen O’Hara Patty died on October 26, 1999, days prior to her 77th birthday, in Santa Monica.

SAKTHI T.K.KRISHNASAMY BORN 1913 MARCH 11- 1987 NOVEMBER 8

SAKTHI T.K.KRISHNASAMY BORN

1913 MARCH 11- 1987 NOVEMBER 8

QING DYNASTY-QIU JIN - Chinese feminist & revolutionary martyr BORN NOVEMBER 8,1875 - 1907 JULY 15

QING DYNASTY-QIU JIN - Chinese feminist & revolutionary martyr

BORN NOVEMBER 8,1875 - 1907 JULY 15

Qiu Jin (1875–1907) was a Chinese writer & poet, a strong-willed feminist who is considered a national hero in China. Also called “Jianhu Nüxia” (Woman Knight of Mirror Lake”), she was executed after participating in a failed uprising against the Qing Dynasty.

Qiu Jin was born in 1875 to a family of the gentry, and received an excellent education as was typical for a young woman of her position. She always loved to write, and in this period of her life she wrote many joyful poems on subjects ranging from flowers and the four seasons to visiting historical places and domestic activities. She also wrote about female heroes and warriors from Chinese history, in inspiring poems about their strength, courage, and beauty. One of her poems begins “Don’t tell me women / are not the stuff of heroes”. Her poetry reflected her self-confidence and desire to become an excellent female writer as valued by traditional Chinese culture.

When Qiu Jin was 19, she obeyed her father and married the son of a wealthy merchant, against her own wishes. Qiu became extremely unhappy in her marriage. She wrote of her husband, “That person’s behavior is worse than an animal’s….He treats me as less than nothing.” and “When I think of him my hair bristles with anger, it’s absolutely unbearable.” Her previous self-confidence was shaken and her dreams of becoming a recognized poet were abandoned. Her poetry from this period of her life was full of self-doubt and loneliness.

During this period Qiu also began writing poetry about current events and the fate of China. After hearing of events such as the Boxer Rebellion and occupation of Beijing, she used her poetry, with literary allusion to heroines of the past, to express her conern about the fate of China and Chinese women. Qiu longed to serve her country but realized that that wasn’t possible as long as she was trapped in a conventional married life. Her marriage was an important catalyst in her development as a feminist and revolutionary.

In 1903, Qiu Jin moved with her husband to Beijing where he had purchased an official post. In Beijing, Qiu started reading feminist writings and became interested in women’s education.

Qiu Jin finally left her husband in 1903, leaving to study in Japan. She became vocal in her support for women’s rights, pressed for improved access to education for women in her journals and speech, and spoke out against the practice of foot-binding. Returning to China in 1905, she joined the Triads, an underground society who advocated for the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty, and other anti-Qing societies both Chinese and Japanese. She admired the Japanese for their disciplined military spirit and thought that it played an important role in the modernization of Japan.

“With all my heart I beseech and beg my two hundred million female compatriots to assume their responsibility as citizens. Arise! Arise! Chinese women, arise!”

In 1906 Qiu founded her own journal, “Zhongguo nubao” (Chinese women’s journal), which featured nationalist and feminist writings. Unlike traditional and other nationalist views that held women’s place as mothers and educators in a traditional family role, Qiu Jin saw the traditional family as oppressive to women.

Qiu was appointed head of the Datong school in the city of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, in 1907. The school was supposedly for sport teachers, but was actually used for the military training of revolutionaries. In the final years of her life, she frequently cross-dressed, wearing western-style men’s clothing, and practiced military drills and training with her students. She became well-known as a chivalrous woman for helping the poor and weak.

At this time, Qiu was working with her cousin Xu Xilin to unite and train fellow revolutionaries who also believed that China needed a western-style government. On July 6, 1907, Xu was caught and tortured for information before an uprising they had scheduled in Anqing in Angui Province. He was executed the next day.

Qiu Jin learned about her cousin’s death and the failed uprising a few days later. She was warned that officials would be coming for her at the Datong school, but she stayed anyway, writing to her sword sister Xu Yunhua that she was determined to die for the cause. On July 13, Qiu was arrested. Even after being tortured she refused to talk about her involvement in the scheduled uprising, but incriminating evidence was found at the school. On July 15, 1907, Qiu Jin was beheaded publicly in her home village of Shanyin, at the age of 31.

Shocked by the brutal execution of a woman, many Chinese were strengthened in their resentment of the Qing dynasty. Qiu Jin immediately became a national hero, and was the subject of poetry, drama, and numerous works of fiction. Much of her writing, including her poetry and letters to family and friends, was published after her death.

To this day, Qiu Jin is a symbol of women’s independence in China. She is now buried by Xī Hú (West Lake) in Hangzhou, where a statue of her marks her tomb.

MUNAWAR SULTANA HINDI ACTRESS 1924 NOVEMBER 8- 2007 SEPTEMBER 15

MUNAWAR SULTANA HINDI ACTRESS 1924 NOVEMBER 8- 2007 SEPTEMBER 15

Munawar Sultana (NOV 8,1924–SEP,15,2007) (her name in all her films opening credits), also written as Munnawar Sultana,[1] or Munawar Sultana[2] was an Indian cinema actress, who acted in Hindi/Hindustani films. She is cited as one of the "popular" actresses of the late 1940s to early 1950s period, along with Noor Jehan, Swarnalata and Ragini.[3] Her specialty was playing the role of a selfless woman, enduring the rough treatment meted by her husband and family, but who eventually "brought her erring husband back home".[4]

She came into prominence with Mazhar Khan's Pehli Nazar (1945), her first film in a leading role. A discovery of actor-producer-director Mazhar Khan, she became inundated with film offers, becoming one of the busiest actresses by 1949, along with other leading ladies such as Suraiya and Nargis.[5] Some of her successful films were Pehli Nazar, Dard (1947), Elaan (1947) Kaneez (1947), and Babul (1950).

Early life

Munawar Sultana was born on 8 November 1924, in Lahore, British India, into a strict Punjabi Muslim family.[4] According to an interview with son Sarfaraz and daughter Shaheen, conducted by Shishir Krishna Sharma, Munawwar's father was a radio announcer. Munawwar wanted to become a doctor, but was side-tracked by an offer in films. This was a small role in the film, Dalsukh Pancholi's Khazanchi (1941), where she played a barmaid, and had a song, "Peene Ke Din Aaye" picturised on her.[6] She went by the screen name Asha for this period.[4] According to Patel, Munawwar came to Bombay from Lahore, courtesy of the actor-director Mazhar Khan in 1945. She became popular with her film Pehli Nazar, a role she stated was one of her favourites.[7]

Career
In 1945, she was visited in Lahore by producer-actor-director Mazhar Khan, who contracted her on a monthly fee of Rs. 4000 plus an apartment, and brought her to Bombay. Munawwar's first film with Mazhar was Pehli Nazar, where she was cast opposite actor Motilal. In the popular song "Dil Jalta Hai Toh Jalne Do" (Let the Aflame Heart Burn) playbacked by singer Mukesh for Motilal, Khan focused on Munawwar's close-ups during the picturisation.

1940s
Following Pehli Nazar, she was kept busy through 1947 to 1949 working in several films. Baburao Patel wrote in the cine-mag Filmindia 1949, about her being one of the most over-worked actresses along with Suraiya and Nargis.[5]

In 1947, Munawar acted in four films Dard, Elaan, Andhon Ki Duniya and Naiyya. Dard was directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar under Kardar Productions. In spite of no big stars being in the film, it turned out to be a surprise "musical hit" at the box office.[8] The hero of the film was Kardar's brother Nusrat (Kardar),[9] while Suraiya played the second lead, with Munawwar Sultana as the main heroine.[10] Munawwar lip-synced three songs voiced for her by Uma Devi, a Naushad discovery. The song "Afsana Likh Rahin Hoon" became a big success.[11] Elaan garnered positive reviews for Munawwar. A Muslim social, the film was praised for its "progressive attitude" towards the need of education. It was directed by Mehboob Khan and had Surendra as the male lead. [12]

1948 saw Munawar in four more films. Parai Aag was produced by Great India Pictures and directed by Najam Naqvi. The film starred Munawar with Madhubala and Ulhas. Sona (Gold) was another Mazhar Khan-directed film for his Mazhar Arts Production. Majboor was a Bombay Talkies production, under the direction of Nazir Ajmeri. It had Shyam opposite Munawwar with music by Ghulam Haider. Bombay Talkies had gone through several changes following Himanshu Rai's death, and Devika Rani's partnership with S. Mukherjee had produced several box office hits. With first, Mukherjee, and then Devika Rani leaving as head of production of Bombay Talkies, Ashok Kumar and S. Vacha returned to Bombay Talkies and took over control. Their first film was Majboor. The story was an "inter-communal" love story, with a Muslim boy falling for a Hindu girl.[13] Munawwar formed a "hit-pairing" with Shyam in this film, while Lata Mangeshkar came into prominence under the music direction of Ghulam Haider.[14] Meri Kahani was directed by cameraman Keki Mistry and produced by Sharaf for Super Team Federal Productions (Bombay). The film co-starred Munawwar and Madhubala with Surendra. A comedy of errors, it has the hero in a double role leading to mistaken identities.[15]

1949 was Munawar's busiest year with seven releases. Dil Ki Duniya was directed by Mazhar Khan for his Noble Arts Production. It co-starred Geeta Bali and Mazhar with Munawar. The film was praised for its "versatility" and "well-balanced production values", along with good performances by Munawwar, Mazhar and Geeta Bali. The film was claimed to have done "well" at the box office.[16] Her standout film that year was Kaneez, directed by Krishna Kumar for Caravan Pictures. A Muslim social, it had Munawwar with Shyam, and Kuldeep Kaur. She played a suffering woman married to a wayward husband, who eventually returns to her. It was described as one of her best roles.[2]

1950s
Out of her four films released in 1950, Munawar's most notable film was Babul (Father's House). She acted opposite Dilip Kumar and Nargis in this love triangle. Directed by S. U. Sunny, the music was composed by Naushad.[17] The film became a major success at the box office. She acted in a few more films till 1956, with Jallad being her last appearance.[citation needed]

Personal life
From 1950, Munawar's career slowed down, and she acted in fewer films. She met her husband Sharif Ali Bhagat, a businessman, on the sets of a movie for which he provided furniture. He produced two films with Munawar in the lead, Meri Kahani (1948) and Pyar Ki Manzil (1950).[4] Following the sudden death of her husband in 1966, Munawar managed her family of four sons and three daughters.[6]

Death
In the last eight years of her life, Munawar suffered from Alzheimer's disease. She died on 15 September 2007, at her home in Ambedkar Road. Pali Hill, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.[6][18]
