Ziegfeld Girls - JESSIE REED BIOGRAPHY

Ziegfeld Girls - JESSIE REED BIOGRAPHY

There were hundreds of Ziegfeld Girls...but I am only going to highlight the ones that really pique my interest. But, I HIGHLY recommend the book Jazz Age Beauties: the lost collection of Ziegfeld photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston by Robert Hudovernik. I need to buy it myself actually, but I have checked it out thousands of times from my work and just look at the beautiful pictures. They are truly breathtaking. You will also see some familiar faces like Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Clara Bow and see some new faces as well. Some aren't even named which is sad because they are just breathtaking.

Two other great books that I just love to look at are The Ziegfeld Touch: the life and times of Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. by Richard Ziegfeld and Ziegfeld Follies by Marjorie Farnsworth.

Anyways, down to business. I introduce you now to Miss Jessie Reed. Another Ziegfeld beauty who was plagued by the Ziegfeld "curse." She had a great career with stardom and rich suitors, but died penniless and alone. I was drawn to her because, well, we share the same name...so I gotta connect with her on that level.

Like Myrna Darby, I don't know much about Jessie's early life, like where she was born, her birth date, etc. first appeared on stage in 1918 when she was discovered by Jake Schubert. She was quickly stolen away by Florenz Ziegfeld who put her in his 1919 edition of the Midnight Frolic...the more "risque" version of the Follies.

She continued to work on the rooftop, but also appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies from 1921 until 1924. Talk about being a busy girl!

Busy girl is right! Jessie soon became more famous (or infamous) for her life OFF the stage. If I may quote the moronic Kanye West..."I ain't sayin' she a gold digger." But...actions speak louder than words. I will give her credit for the fact that she didn't apologize for any of her actions, she knew who she was and what she was doing.

Jessie had her fair share of suitors and husbands for that matter. Her first marriage was to a black face comedian named Oliver de Brow. The two had a daughter named Ann. Apparently the two divorced after Oliver killed a man in a duel, which is a pretty good reason to divorce someone.

Her second "supposed" marriage was to another performer named Lew Reed. I have read conflicting reports as to whether they were actually married or if they were just living together for a time. After that, she married advertisement executive, Bill Young. After him was millionaire Dan Caswell.

Her last husband was named Leonard Reno, who actually visited her in the hospital before she died. He and even his new wife donated blood to try and save Jessie's life. Obviously, none of the marriages lasted. Her ex-husbands found her to be greedy, manic, and too high maintenance.

By 1935, Jessie was alone and broke. She got a few dollars from various theater charities every once in awhile that kept her fed and clothed.

Jessie Reed passed away at age 42. She became a moral lesson to young girls about what happens when you become too spoiled.Apparently she was buried at either Oliver/Olivet Cemetery. I am not sure of the state, but I think it is in New York.

Annie de Brow

Her daughter, Annie de Brow was actually going to audition for the Follies in 1932, but Ziegfeld passed away. She and her mother were not close, in fact Jessie rarely even talked about her. She was sent away as a baby to live with Oliver de Brow's family in Texas. I believe I read that Annie passed away sometime in the 1970s.

Biography:

Beautiful and mercurial Jessie Reed was discovered by Jake Schubert in 1918 and put in the cast of his revue, "The Passing Show." Her dark good looks and graceful dancing captured attention, so Schubert installed her in the Sigmund Romberg musical "Sinbad" where her skill determined Florenz Ziegfeld to steal her for his 1919 Midnight Frolic. She stayed on in Ziegfeld's 1920 rooftop entertainment, "The Girls of 1920," and was featured in the Follies from 1921 to 1924.

Jessie Reed's greatest performances did not take place on the stage of the New Amsterdam Theater. In the 1920s she became famous as one of the most shameless gold-diggers in the country. She married twice for love, to blackface vaudevillian Oliver de Brow and performer Lew Reed, but found passion turned to dispassion all too quickly, so she opted for money, marrying two millionaires and an heir to a fortune. All found her high maintenance and manic.

By 1935, she was alone, impoverished, and receiving relief money from theatrical charities. She attempted to support herself as a nightclub hostess in Chicago, but was incapable of keeping regular hours or a civil tongue. She died indigent, at the age of 42. She became in death a favorite moral exemplum of what happens to spoiled beauties. Her daughter, Ann Carroll De Brow, was trying out for the Follies when Ziegfeld died in 1932. David S. Shields/ALS

SILENT MOVIES ACTRESS ARE MORE ZIEGFELD GIRLS

SILENT MOVIES ACTRESS ARE MORE

ZIEGFELD GIRLS

What else do I love besides silent films? The Ziegfeld Follies. The costumes and shows and the girls and the talent...just amazing. I don't think it could be recreated today. I am sure it would have amazing visual effects nowadays, but back then...it was new and state of the art. It was also during a time of gayness, frivolity, and devil-may-care attitudes. I wish I was around for that! If I had been around during that time, I picture being a Ziegfeld Girl, then a silent film actress, and marry Buster Keaton. The end.

Anyways, I love the Ziegfeld Girls. I especially love the pictures taken by Follies photographer, Alfred Cheney Johnston. They are some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen.

I am profiling a few of my favorite girls here. Not all of them were silent film stars, but it was during the same time, so I am adding them. They were beautiful ladies and deserve to be remembered for their involvement in the most spectacular stage show of the century.

Adorable lil Ann Pennington! She packed a lot of energy in her 4'10'' body, and this is one of the reasons why I adore her. I saw a clip of her doing The Black Bottom and it was just amazing. She is also a sad example of how some of these stars ended up unknown and living in poverty later in life.

Ann Pennington was born on December 23, 1893 in Wilmington, Delaware.

She made her stage debut in 1911 and entered the Ziegfeld Follies in 1913. She quickly became a star in the Follies and moved out of just being in the chorus. Because she was so well known on the stage, she was able to appear in both the Follies and George White's Scandals.

Ann appeared in a total of 23 movies, 13 of which were silents. Sadly, most of these films are lost or her part in the film is missing or ended up on the cutting room floor. I also read that there isn't any film left of her doing her signature dance moves, but that is false. Like I stated earlier, I have seen a video clip of her doing The Black Bottom...and it wasn't that long ago.

Ann had a bright and shining personality on stage and often wore revealing costumes. But, offstage she could by shy. But, onstage or off, she loved to have fun.

She lived in both New York and California, depending on what she was working on at the time. In California, she was roommates with friend Fanny Brice.

Ann continued to tour on stage dancing until the 1940s when she retired. One of her last big public appearances was at the 1939 World's Fair.

Ann Pennington passed away on November 4, 1971 in New York City. She had been living alone and penniless for years.

She was buried in Valhallia Cemetery in New York. Her funeral and grave were paid for by the Actors Benevolent Guild. Apparently no one from her family attended her funeral (Ann had a sister named Nellie, but I don't know anything about her).

Ann never married but she did have a few beaus. The closest she ever came to marrying was when she was engaged to boxer Jack Dempsey. She was also rumored to have dated George White, but this was never confirmed because Ann never talked about her personal relationships.

George Gershwin played piano for her during Ziegfeld rehearsals, and also wrote several songs for her.

Her nicknames included "Tiny" and "Penny"

This is a video clip I found of Ann dancing her heart out!

Gibson Girls | Vintage Sex Goddesses 1891 -1910

Gibson Girls | Vintage Sex Goddesses 1891 -1910

Gibson Girls by Charles Dana Gibson

The Gibson Girls of America’s Victorian Age – the late 19th and early 20th century, had a style and sophistication that paved the way to today’s popular Vintage Revival. Long tresses piled high on their heads with sexy tendrils innocently escaping those seemingly impossible coifs, the women of the era possessed an alluring mystique.

With decorated necklines and tiny corseted waists, Gibson Girls were quite the rage in their day; incredibly sexy, despite their turn of the century moral standards.

When I say, “Gibson Girls” I refer to the fair creations depicted in the wildly popular drawings of American artist Charles Dana Gibson. These clever young women were considered “hot” when the word “hot” still referred to the state of your porridge.

Before I get down to the suggestions on how you too can become a modern-day Gibson Girl goddess, I feel compelled to offer a brief glimpse into the era in which Charles Dana Gibson became so popular.

Victorianism in America

American Victorianism was trendy chiefly in the New England states from roughly 1875 to 1910. During these puritanical times, sex was never discussed in polite company. Even the word “leg” dare not be mentioned for fear that gentlemen overhearing such conversation might lose control of their bodily functions.

Sexual feelings and non-marital “relations” were barely acknowledged by people of good breeding, save for one or two goateed Viennese psychoanalysts. That’s not to say people of the day were asexual; quite the opposite. Brothels flourished and were widely frequented by gentlemen (mostly) from all walks of society both in Europe and the U.S., while thousands of pornographic pamphlets, photos and novels were fervently snatched up by a sexually repressed populace.

The talented New York art student, Charles Dana Gibson got a career break in the fall of 1886 when he managed to sell a drawing of a dog chained to his doghouse to a little publication called Life Magazine. He continued to produce drawings for Life for the next 30 years and became a veritable media superstar of his day. The dog had nothing to do with it.

Gibson's illustration “The Weaker Sex”

It was Gibson’s representation of the ideal woman that made him famous. Soon labeled “The Gibson Girl”, this innocent sex goddess was to the printed page, what Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot would later be to the silver screen.

In Victorian times, it was the illustrators of popular magazines that influenced people’s esthetic values.

Life magazine’s Gibson Girls were spirited, well bred, independent and utterly feminine, yet underneath it all, there was that Scarlet O’Hara flash of mischief in their eyes.

That naughty characteristic was what made the Gibson Girl so alluring. Coy, mischievous, intelligent; those sexy attributes of the Victorian era are still sexy today.

Gibson Girls on TV

If you’ve been enjoying some of the popular turn-of-the-century genre programs on television, such as Public Broadcasting’s “Downton Abbey”, and “Mr. Selfridge”, you may also have been lusting after the vintage fashions featured within those series such as the decorative mesh handbags, the alluring lingerie and the choker necklaces.

How to Become a Modern Day Gibson Girl – Here Are My Savvy Suggestions:

Hillary Miles as a Gibson Girl

Here I am with a Gibson Girl hairdo I created using the stuffed pantyhose method. I was a professional actor at the time.

We need to sport more Gibson Girl hairstyles. Curling irons, flat irons, hair rollers and the like are as cumbersome as corsets. Just let your hair do its thing and pile it on top of your head. If a few tendrils escape, all the better.

If your hair lacks volume, there are two ways to create the Gibson Girl look.

1- Buy a handful of synthetic hair from a beauty supply store and pin it behind your front hairline.

2- Lift all your hair, (natural and synthetic) loosely on top of your head. Swirl the ends into a bun and secure it with bobby pins.

For a Fuller, More Constructed Gibson Hairdo Effect….

1- Cut off the leg of an old panty hose.

2- Fill it with cotton or any soft material. Make it the same length as the circumference of your head and sew the ends together to form a big, soft donut.

3- Now comb the front of your hair down from the top of your head, with bangs or long front hair hanging over your eyes. The rest of your hair hangs down over your ears and neck.

4- Slide the donut over your head but don’t go past your ears or forehead.

5- Lift all your hanging hair over the donut and tie it into a pony tail on the top of your head.

6- Wrap the tail into a bun. If your hair isn't long enough to tie, just pin it and secure a fake bun on the top of your head.

7- Pull out some hair tendrils from the roll, in front of your ears and down your neck. That’s it!

More suggestions for a Gibson Girl Revival:

Gibson Girls at the beach

1- Design and market a Gibson Girl swim suit complete with black stockings. I’m sure Gortex has some newfangled material that keeps you cool in 90 degree temperatures. When you’ve developed it, let me know and I’ll advertise it on this page.

gibson girl plays golf2- Wear a shirtwaist blouse with a sexy bustier, or camisole. Sport a flowing skirt with just a hint of a bustle. If you’re natural bustle is already built in, more power to you.

3- Buy some vintage silk lingerie. There is nothing sexier.

4- Carry a vintage handbag. It's all the rage right now, and the mesh, beaded and tapestry bags are becoming great collectible items.

5- Continue to trust your feminine intuition. It will help you screen out deadbeat suitors.

6- Don’t be afraid to be “mischievous”. It worked for the Gibson Girl and it will work for you. Just don’t get arrested.

6- Read Victorian sex novels. They're the real thing and your partner will thank you for it.

If you’re interested in a steamy, sophisticated Victorian book by a modern day author, check out “The Crimson Petal and the White” (offered below). It's a brilliantly conceived, funny, erotic and satisfying novel by Michael Faber. The book explores England’s Victorian society including “preening socialites, drunken journalists,.. and whores of all types and persuasions”. His brilliant heroine is in many ways, the Gib

Forget about Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney. At the turn of the twentieth century, it was all about Evelyn, Camille, and Irene, the original "Gibson Girls" and the models for the drawings that changed the way America thought about women.

Though the 1890s may seem buttoned up by modern standards, they were anything but. Independent, well-read, and urbane, a new class of woman was emerging in America's cities. This "New Woman" did not care to be chaperoned in public. She was athletic and free-spirited. Above all, she was educated, taking advantage of new access to secondary school and college.

She was also scary. By the 1890s, the reform fervor of suffragists and their sisters had ceased to be cute and started to be all too real. The status quo was being challenged by Progressive politics, new divorce laws, and women who chose to work outside the home. Charles Dana Gibson, a popular illustrator, looked down on reform zeal in women. And so he created "the Gibson girl," a catch-all representation of a kinder, gentler New Woman—one who rode bikes, wore casual clothing, and flaunted her attitude, but was above all beautiful and anonymous. By the 1910s, to visit Gibson's office was to push your way through hundreds of gorgeous models with big hair and small waists, each vying for a go as one of Gibson's girls.

Wikimedia Commons

If ever there was a figure that expressed ambiguity about its subject, it was the Gibson Girl. Gibson's creations poked men with pins and looked at them under magnifying glasses, towered over infatuated suitors, and even played golf—all while rocking gigantic pompadours and chignons, crisp shirtwaists and impeccably corseted hips. You wouldn't see her at a settlement house or a suffrage rally, but you might spot her by the Ouija board or by the sea, working her hose and bathing costume with all of the self-conscious hauteur of a Kim K. selfie.

"Wear a blank expression/and a monumental curl/And walk with a bend in your back/Then they will call you a Gibson Girl." Camille Clifford, a Belgian songbird, sang this tune with great irony in 1907, long after she won an international magazine contest in search of the woman who best embodied Gibson's girl. Known for her 18-inch waist and her signature walk, she took the theatrical world by storm without benefit of acting skills or much more than the rumor that she had eloped with a British lord. She can also be blamed for the high-maintenance fashion craze that was the S-curve, an overtly sensuous look achieved by a corset laced nearly to the knees.

Wikimedia Commons

Evelyn Nesbit, another one of Gibson's models, boasted of a career that started as the first supermodel and ended with the first "trial of the century" of the 1900s. Like many others, Gibson was entranced by her luxurious, over-the-top hair, which he molded into a question mark for one of the most famous Gibson Girl drawings, entitled "Woman: The Eternal Question." A recent book claims that a photograph of Evelyn even inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery to write Anne of Green Gables.

Getty Images

Evelyn appeared on magazine covers, pouted as a "Florodora girl," and was eventually seduced by notorious womanizer Stanford White, who infamously placed her on a red velvet swing in his apartment so he could admire her before deflowering her. Eventually, she married millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw, who shot White to death after spotting him at Madison Square Garden. The trial that ensued put O.J. Simpson's to shame, with wall-to-wall tabloid coverage and a deadlocked jury. After her husband was convicted, Evelyn went on to work in silent films, burlesque, and even operated her own Prohibition-era speakeasy.

Ironically, the least famous of the Gibson Girls was probably the original, and Irene Langhorne Gibson was far closer to the independent New Woman than her husband liked to admit. Known for her supermodel looks and her Virginia fortune, Irene fended off plenty of proposals before falling in love with Gibson. But though her tall stature and haughty, almost arrogant looks inspired her husband, Irene was far more noteworthy for her passion for Progressive politics. Her philanthropic efforts helped troubled women and children, and her ability to use her society connections effected real change. While Gibson turned women back into Girls, Irene quietly and tirelessly showed just what a woman could achieve.

800 YOUNG GIRLS SOLD BY FATHER CYRIAC OF KERALA

800 YOUNG GIRLS SOLD BY

FATHER CYRIAC OF KERALA

“exporting” more than 800 young Catholic girls from Kerala to Germany ON SALE
Nearly half a century ago, Father Cyriac Puthenpurackal, who was in charge of an independent diocese in Ettumanoor in Kottayam district, was accused of “exporting” more than 800 young Catholic girls from Kerala to Germany in what came to be known as the “nun-running” scandal of the 1960s and early 70s. The girls, who mostly came from poor families, were apparently under the impression that they were going to be trained as nurses or teachers; but they actually landed up doing domestic work in the convents of Germany.
In the 1960s, the German convents were finding it difficult to maintain the huge nunneries which were built at a time when many local girls were willing to take their vows. In Kerala, on the other hand, large Catholic families were still eager to dedicate some of their children to the Church. Father Puthenpurackal and his associates exploited this situation and recruited young catholic girls from the backwoods of Kerala, and sent them to Germany, promising them that they would be given vocational training.
By the mid-1960s, the export of these girls was at its peak. Each of the many convents in Kerala got at least a dozen new recruits every year. There was no shortage of nuns in Kerala. But the girls who were sent to Germany were not necessarily ones who were intending to become nuns. Only after they reached Germany did they realise they had been lured under false pretenses, and that the German convents had actually paid money to get them over to do manual work. The money went into the pockets of the priests, and the families did not even know they had sold their daughters.
A foreign newspaper broke the story of these girls who were being used as bonded labour in the convents. Soon, there was an uproar in India. The Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala and the Catholic Church in Germany were found to be involved in the transactions.
Many papers both in India and abroad carried articles about these girls. But not too much effort was made to trace them and bring them back. In 1983, when the old scandal was almost forgotten, the name of Father Puthenpurackal re-surfaced. He was at his old game again, and this time the girls were being sent to Italy.

‘Escape’ from Italy
Mercy and Jessy who had “escaped” from an Italian convent and returned home with the help of a relative who lived in Italy, spoke to me then as I was doing a story on this issue. They had been told they would be trained as nurses, they said, but instead as soon as they reached Rome, they were made to dress as probationers in nuns’ clothing.
The girls came from a village in Kottayam and had hardly stepped out of their own district before. Their families were poor and illiterate. They trusted the Father implicitly when he said they would be trained abroad, and would get good jobs when they returned. But instead, they said, they ended up cleaning the long corridors, large windows and huge bathrooms of the convent.Their passports were confiscated when they landed, and like the couple of other nuns from Kerala who were in the convent, they, too, were treated like bonded labour. The Church had paid Rs 15,000 per head for them, they said. They finally escaped with the help of a relative of one of the girls who lived in Italy.
Recently, a journalist and filmmaker tried to trace some of the women who had been sent to Germany with the help of old newspaper reports which specified which convents they had gone to. They could trace only a few of them. Some were in good positions in the German convents, others had died, and some had returned to India. Maybe many had also escaped.
But all that is history.
Today Kerala is also facing a shortage of nuns. Families have shrunk, educated girls seek other career opportunities and the number of girls having a true “vocation” has dwindled to three or four per year. Kerala which has one of the oldest Christian communities in the country was once the largest producer of nuns. Today, there are hardly any young nuns in the convents. More girls from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and the North East seem to be taking the veil.
Nuns in Kerala are not treated on par with the priests. When they enter the convent as brides of Jesus, they are expected to pay a dowry to the church. The churches therefore would prefer to get girls from well-off families who might even bring a share of their ancestral property with them. Many of them work as teachers or nurses in the institutions run by the church. The salaries they get are confiscated by the Motherhouse. While their living expenses are taken care of, they have no spending money, and many of them depend on their visiting relatives to give them a little extra money. If they leave the convent, they are supposed to get back the amount they paid and some compensation, so that they can survive on their own in the outside world; but often they have to fight for this and settle for a lesser amount.
The convent, therefore, has a kind of stranglehold on the nuns as years of living inside the cloister makes them unprepared to face the outside world. Also, since the discipline of obedience is drilled into them, they cannot escape the clutches of powerful Bishops, Priests and Mother Superiors who could turn out to be predatory.
Even when a nun is murdered inside the convent, the murderers may never be brought to justice. Take the case of 19-year-old Sister Abhaya. In 1993, her body was found floating in a well inside the premises of her convent. Twenty five years later, the case against her alleged murderers is still going on. At first her death was deemed to be a suicide, further investigation over several years finally zeroed in on three suspects: a nun and two priests whom Sister Abhaya might have found in a compromising position when she went at 4 am to get some water from the kitchen. The three were arrested only 15 years later in 2008 and were out on bail in January 2009. Two years later, they filed a discharge plea. And, seven years later in 2018, one of the priests, who was the third accused, was acquitted. Will Sister Abhaya’s family ever get the justice they seek?
Inside the convent
It is not as if the convent is a cosy, serene haven for the nuns. In 2009, Sister Jesme, who had spent more than 30 years as a nun, left the convent after she took VRS when she was the principal of a school. After she came out, she wrote a scathingly critical book called “Amen”, about the oppression nuns face within the convent. Writing from her own personal experiences, she described sexual misconduct on the part of priests as well nuns. She said she was sexually harassed by a Mother Superior of a convent who told her that this was the best kind of sexual relationship they could have as there was no danger of pregnancy. She described how senior priests preyed on novices. She also wrote of a respected priest who took her to his room when she was in Bengaluru. He stripped and ordered her to do the same and touch him. All the while, he was telling her about senior priests and bishops and the relationships they were in.
Sister Jesme’s book caused a furore and senior Church officials dismissed it as a “book of trivialities.” Even her family abandoned her as they did not want to be rejected by their society. The convent turned her out without any money though she had served them for thirty years. She was labelled a prostitute by some Church officials. Today, almost a decade later, Sister Jesme looks happier for having taken that decision to leave the convent. She has now come out with another book, this time in the form of a novel.
The alleged rape of a nun by Bishop Franco has brought all these problems to the fore again. Only this time it is a bit different. The nuns are now learning to speak for themselves and ask for justice.
To those who ask why she allowed herself to be raped repeatedly and why did she not leave the convent immediately after the first time, the answer becomes self-evident. The Bishop was the powerful one, the man she had been taught to trust and obey. Obviously, complaining to her superiors about him did not help. If she had left the convent, she would have not only been penniless she would have also have been socially ostracised.
The rise of her fellow nuns in her support is an act of great bravery. Hopefully the Church as well as society and the government will give them protection and enable them to fight for the justice they deserve.
Views expressed are the author's own.

(My grandpa had an elephant and other stories.)
