Fouzia Azeem (Urdu: فوزیہ عظیم‬‎; 1 March 1990 – 15 July 2016), better known by the name Qandeel Baloch (Urdu: قندیل بلوچ‬‎), was a Pakistani model, actress, and social media celebrity. Baloch rose to prominence due to her videos on social networks discussing her daily routine and various controversial issues.[1]

Baloch first received recognition from the media in 2013, when she auditioned for Pakistan Idol; her audition went viral and she became an Internet celebrity.[2][3] She was one of the top 10 most searched for persons on the internet in Pakistan and both celebrated and criticised for the content of her videos and posts.[4]

During the evening of 15 July 2016, Baloch was asphyxiated while she was asleep in the house where her parents live in Multan.[5] Her brother Waseem Azeem confessed to the murder saying she was "bringing disrepute" to the "family's honour".[6][7][8]

Early life
Baloch was born on 1 March 1990 in Dera Ghazi Khan,[9] Punjab. She hailed from Shah Sadar Din.[9] [10] and an underprivileged family and had six brothers and two sisters. Her first job was as a bus hostess. [11]

Career
Baloch's fame was based on her social media posts – pictures, videos and comments. These were considered bold and outrageous by the largely conservative Pakistani community. Her most popular videos were those of her with her catchphrase "How em luking?"(How am I looking?) and those of her saying "Maire sar mai pain ho raha hai" (I'm getting a headache) in a funny and catchy tone. Her catchphrases became viral and were used by the Pakistani youth in enjoyment. They were also featured of dubbing social media site dubsmash and became widely popular among Indian and Pakistani youth alike.[4] Some international news media compared her to Kim Kardashian;[12] however, local commentators stated that she was more significant than Kardashian, as Baloch "went against the norms of society" and lived life on her own terms.[13] She started to appear on Pakistani talk shows regularly by 2014, either to perform songs or to discuss her rising social media popularity. During her life she served as digital manager at Neptuner Web Solutions[14] in 2016

In June 2016, Baloch met senior cleric Mufti Abdul Qawi in a hotel room to learn more about her faith; the interaction between them brought about mayhem on social media platforms as their photos went viral online.[15][16][17] She also wore a hat with the Mufti's signature.[18] The meeting led to the Mufti being suspended from his position on one of Pakistan's religious committees, and to Baloch being a regular on popular Pakistani current affairs and news programmes. She appeared on various popular Pakistani TV shows with senior anchors such as Mubashir Lucman. She would mostly be on talk shows debating with religious scholars on her western and controversial acts and lifestyle.[19]

A previous stunt which went viral on social media was her promise to strip dance for her followers and to dedicate her dance to cricketer Shahid Afridi if Pakistan won the Twenty20 match against India on 19 March 2016. She released a teaser on social media, which went viral, but Pakistan lost the match.[20] Some Indian media compared her with Poonam Pandey at this point due to her controversial personality.[21][22]

As her media presence grew, Baloch began to use her position to comment on women's position in Pakistani society. The week before she died, she released a music video entitled Ban, which mocked the restrictions placed on women in the country.[19] In an interview with controversial anchor Mubashir Luqman, Baloch named Sunny Leone, Rakhi Sawant and Poonam Pandey as her inspirations.[23] She also said that many organizations, people and media groups were calling her to feature in their shows to increase their own ratings.[24]

Security concerns
Following the June 2016 meeting with Qawi, Baloch kept a press conference and reported that she received death threats both from him and from others, and demanded police protection from the state.[19][25]

At around the same time, Baloch's ex-husband described in the media their brief marriage, revealing intimate details of their relationship. Baloch claimed her husband had been abusive, and cried publicly about the pain of the marriage.[13] Around 14 July 2016, Baloch spoke by phone to a reporter from the Express Tribune paper and stated that she feared for her life.[19] She told the reporter that she had sought protection from the police but on receiving no response, had decided to move abroad with her parents after the Eid al-Fitr holiday as she felt unsafe in Pakistan.[11]

Personal life
Baloch married Aashiq Hussain in 2008, aged 17, and had one son with him.[26][27] Baloch left her husband a year later, saying he was abusive.[11][28] There are reports Baloch was separated from a second marriage.[29]

Death
On 15 July 2016, Qandeel Baloch was drugged and then asphyxiated by her brother M. Waseem Baloch while she was asleep at her parents' home in Multan.[30][11][31] Her death was reported by her father Azeem.[11][32][33] It was first reported as a shooting, but an autopsy report confirmed that Baloch was murdered by asphyxiation while she was asleep,[34] on the night of 15–16 July, around 11:15 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. By the time her body was found she had already been dead for between fifteen and thirty-six hours.[35] Marks on Baloch's body revealed that her mouth and nose were pinned shut to asphyxiate her.[13][36] Police said that they would investigate all sides of the murder including honour killing.[37]

A First Information Report against her brother Waseem and another brother Aslam Shaheen, who allegedly persuaded Waseem to kill their sister, was issued.[38][39] Baloch's father Azeem stated in the FIR that his sons Aslam Shaheen and Waseem were responsible for their sister’s death and had killed her for her money. Her father told the press "my daughter was brave and I will not forget or forgive her brutal murder."[40]

Waseem was arrested on the evening of 16 July. He confessed to murdering his sister, saying "she [Qandeel Baloch] was bringing disrepute to our family's honour and I could not tolerate it any further. I killed her around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night when everyone else had gone to bed. My brother is not involved in the murder."[6]

Murder Case
The state was named as complainant in her murder case, making it impossible for the victim's family to pardon the perpetrator [41][42][43] (see the Pakistani diyaa law). An Islamic cleric, Mufti Abdul Qavi's has been mentioned in the case's First Information Report (FIR) by her father.[44][45][46] The cleric was previously involved[47] and already being investigated by the Multan police at the time of murder.[48]

Reactions

Baloch's murder was widely condemned by media celebrities and people around the globe,[49][50] while some in Pakistan were more inclined to support her murder.[51] Several personalities, including Madonna, Khloé Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Jamie Lee Curtis, Faryal Fatima, Rakhi Sawant, Imran Khan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sharmila Farooqi, Abdul Razaque, Reham Khan, Sanam Baloch, Osman Khalid Butt, Meesha Shafi, Sabz Khan; UK Radio broadcaster on Allfm.org and Published author on Pakistani issues, Nadia Hussain, Ali Zafar,[52] along with many others condemned the incident,[53][54] including filmmaker and activist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who said, "I really feel that no woman is safe in this country, until we start making examples of people, until we start sending men who kill women to jail, unless we literally say there will be no more killing and those who dare will spend the rest of their lives behind bars."[55] She further said, "There is not a single day where you don't pick up a paper and see a woman hasn't been killed... this is an epidemic."[56]

British Prime Minister Theresa May also condemned the murder saying "there is absolutely no honour in so-called honour killings and they should be referred to as acts of terror."[57] May also said it was 'criminal' for women to be murdered by their male relatives on the grounds of defending family 'honour'.[58] The daughter of the Pakistani ex-Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that the government had finalized the draft law against honour killings in the light of negotiations and the final draft will be presented to a committee of joint session of parliament on July 21 for consideration and approval.”[59][60]

Vigils for Baloch were held in Lahore and Karachi.[61] On November 2, 2017, the father of Qandeel Baloch submitted an application to police alleging that his life was in danger from those who planned his daughter's murder.

In popular culture
Baloch's death has drawn mixed reactions from different sections of society in Pakistan. Some called her death an honour killing and some think that the motive was money. An episode in the A-Plus Entertainment series Yeh Junoon was partially based on her life. The series starred Zhalay Sarhadi and Shamoon Abbasi in lead roles. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's untitled documentary film on her life is under production, that will be released in 2017.

On July 27. 2017, Urdu1 started to air a 28-episode biopic television drama titled Baaghi (meaning "Rebel" in Urdu) based on Qandeel's life, where Saba Qamar plays her character. The first episode amassed more than 1,200,000 views on YouTube. [62]

In 2016, Dawn reported that Baloch biography page on Wikipedia was the fourth most read amongst Pakistani personalities in 2016.[63]

In March 2017, The British-Pakistani/Indian-American hip hop group Swet Shop Boys dedicated the track Aaja from their latest album in the memory of Qandeel Baloch. Recorded samples of her voice from her social media content is also used towards the end of the track.[64]

The musical band Bumbu Sauce also released a song on Qandeel Baloch entitled "Vuzzeerrayazam", which gives Qandeel the titles of ‘Prime Minister’ and ‘Qoum ki beti'.

On June 2017, a documentary film Undercover Asia S4: In The Name Of Honour premiered on Channel NewsAsia. Produced by MAKE Productions, it tells how Baloch's bold and sexy videos challenged convention and shocked a nation which later led to fatal consequences.[65]

Mata Hari was a professional dancer and mistress who became a spy for France during World War I. Suspected of being a double agent, she was executed in 1917.

Synopsis

Born on August 7, 1876, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, Mata Hari was a professional dancer and mistress who accepted an assignment to spy for France in 1916. 

Hired by army captain Georges Ladoux, agreeing to pass military information gleaned from her conquests to the French government. Not long after, however, 

Mata Hari was accused of being a German spy. She was executed by firing squad on October 15, 1917, 
after French authorities learned of her alleged double agency.

Early Life

Mata Hari was born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, on August 7, 1876, to father Adam Zelle, a hat merchant who went bankrupt due to bad investments, and mother Antje Zelle, who fell ill and died when Mata Hari was 15 years old.

 Following her mother's death, Mata Hari and her three brothers were split up and sent to live with various relatives.

At an early age, Mata Hari decided that sexuality was her ticket in life. In the mid-1890s, she boldly answered a newspaper ad seeking a bride for Rudolf MacLeod, a bald, mustachioed military captain based in the Dutch East Indies. 

She sent a striking photo of herself, raven-haired and olive-skinned, to entice him. Despite a 21-year age difference, they wed on July 11, 1895, when Mata Hari was just shy of 19. 

During their rocky, nine-year marriage—
marred by MacLeod's heavy drinking and frequent rages over the attention his wife garnered from other officers
—Mata Hari gave birth to two children, a daughter and a son. (The couple's son died in 1899 after a household worker in the Indies poisoned him for reasons that remain a mystery.)

By the early 1900s, Mata Hari's marriage had deteriorated. Her husband fled with their daughter, and Mata Hari moved to Paris. 

At that time she consulted CHEIRO ,the famous astrologer about her fortune. He replied you are in danger at the time 1917

There, she became the mistress of a French diplomat who helped her hatch the idea of supporting herself as a dancer.

Exotic Dancer and Mistress

All things "Oriental" were the fad in the Paris of 1905. The time seemed ripe for Mata Hari's exotic looks and the "temple dance" 

she created by drawing on cultural and religious symbolism and that she had picked up in the Indies. With characteristic confidence, she siezed the moment.

 She billed herself as a Hindu artist, draped in veils—which she artfully dropped from her body. In one memorable garden performance,

 Mata Hari appeared nearly naked on a white horse. 

Although she daringly bared her buttocks—

then considered the most tittilating part of the anatomy—
she was modest about her breasts, generally keeping them covered with brassiere-styled beads. 

Completing her dramatic transformation from military wife to siren of the East, she coined her stage name, "Mata Hari," which means "eye of the day" in Indonesian dialect.

Mata Hari took the Paris saloons by storm, then moved on to the bright lights of other cities. Along the way, she helped turn the striptease into an  art form and captivated critics. 

A reporter in Vienna described Mata Hari as
 "slender and tall with the flexible grace of a wild animal, 
and with blue-black hair." 

Her face, he wrote, "makes a strange foreign impression." Another enthralled newspaper 
writer called her "so feline,

 extremely feminine, majestically tragic, the thousand curves and movements of her body trembling in a thousand rhythms."

Within a few years, however, Mata Hari's cachet had faded.

 As younger dancers took the stage, her bookings became sporadic. 

She supplemented her income by seducing government and military men; sex became strictly a financial practicality for her. Despite the growing tension in Europe in the years leading up to World War I, 

Mata Hari foolishly knew no borders with her lovers, 
who included German officers.

 As war swept the continent, she had some freedom of movement as a citizen of neutral Holland and took full advantage of it, country-hopping with trunks of clothing in tow. 

Before long, however, Mata Hari's cavalier travels and liaisons attracted attention from British and French intelligence, who put her under surveillance.

Spy for France

Now nearing 40, 
plumpish and with her dancing days clearly behind her, Mata Hari fell in love with a 21-year-old Russian captain, Vladimir de Masloff, in 1916. 

During their courtship, Masloff was sent to the Front, where an injury left him blind in one eye. Determined to earn money to support him, 

Mata Hari accepted a lucrative assignment to spy for France from Georges Ladoux, an army captain who assumed her courtesan contacts would be of use to French intelligence.

Mata Hari later insisted that she planned to use her connections to seduce her way into the German high command, get secrets and hand them over to the French—but she never got that far. She met a German attaché and began tossing him bits of gossip, hoping to get some valuable information in return. Instead, she got named as a German spy in communiqués he sent to Berlin—which were promptly intercepted by the French.

 Some historians believe that the Germans suspected Mata Hari was a French spy and subsequently set her up, deliberately sending a message falsely labeling her as a German spy—which they knew would be easily decoded by the French. 

Others, of course, believe that she was in fact a German double agent. 

In any case, the French authorities arrested Mata Hari for espionage in Paris on February 13, 1917. They threw her in a rat-infested cell at the Prison Saint-Lazare, where she was allowed to see only her elderly lawyer—who happened to be a former lover.

During lengthy interrogations by Captain Pierre Bouchardon, a military prosecutor, Mata Hari—who had long lived a fabricated life, embellishing both rearing and resume—bungled and facts about her whereabouts and activities. 

Eventually, she dropped a bombshell confession:
 A German diplomat had once paid her 20,000 francs to gather intelligence on her frequent trips to Paris. But she swore to investigators that she never actually fulfilled the bargain and always remained faithful to France.

 She told them she simply viewed the money as compensation for furs and luggage that had once disappeared on a departing train while German border guards hassled her. 

"A courtesan, I admit it. A spy, never!" she defiantly told her interrogators. "I have always lived for love and pleasure."


Trial for Espionage

Mata Hari's trial came at a time when the Allies were failing to beat back German advances. 

Real or imagined spies were convenient scapegoats for explaining military losses, and Mata Hari's arrest was one of many. Her chief foil, Captain Georges Ladoux, made sure the evidence against her was constructed in the most damning way—by some accounts even tampering with it to implicate her more deeply.

So when Mata Hari admitted that a German officer paid her for sexual favors, prosecutors depicted it as espionage money. 

Additionally, currency she claimed was a regular stipend from a Dutch baron was portrayed in court as coming from German spymasters. That amorous Dutch baron, who could have shed light on the truth, was never called to testify. Nor was Mata Hari's maid, who acted as an intermediary for the baron's payments. 

Mata Hari's morals conspired against her, as well. "Without scruples, accustomed to make use of men, she is the type of woman who is born to be a spy," concluded Bouchardon, whose relentless interviews were the blueprint for the prosecution.

The military tribunal deliberated for less than 45 minutes before returning a guilty verdict. "It's impossible, it's impossible," Mata Hari exclaimed, upon hearing the decision.

Death and Legacy

Mata Hari was executed by firing squad on October 15, 1917. Dressed in a blue coat accented by a tri-corner hat, she had arrived at the Paris execution site with a minister and two nuns and, after bidding them farewell, walked briskly to the designated spot. 

She then turned to face the firing squad, waved away her blindfold and blew the soldiers a kiss. 
She was killed in an instant when their multiple gunshots exploded as one.

It was an improbable end for the exotic dancer and courtesan, whose name became a metaphor for the siren spy who coaxes secrets from her paramours. Her execution merited a scant four paragraphs inside The New York Times, which called her

 "a woman of great attractiveness and with a romantic history."

Mystery continues to surround Mata Hari's life and alleged double agency, and her story has become a legend that still piques curiosity. 

Her life has spawned numerous biographies and cinematic portrayals, including, most famously, the 1931 film Mata Hari, 

starring Greta Garbo as the courtesan-dancer and Ramon Novarro as Lieutenant Alexis Rosanoff.

இவர் 18  வயதில்  மெக்லியோட் , ஸ்காட்லாந்தை சேர்ந்த , டச்சு   படைதலைவரை 1895  ஜூலை 11  இல் மணம்  புரிந்தார் .. திருமணத்திற்கு பின் அழகிய வீட்டில் வசித்தார்.இந்நிலையில் ஜாவா தீவுக்கு மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்ட நிலையில் . கணவருடன் சென்றார் ஒன்பது வருட தாம்பத்தியத்தில் கணவர் குடிகாரன் ஆகி விட , பிற ஆடவர்களுடன் கூடி மகிழ்ந்தார் .இவர்களுக்கு ஒரு பையனும் ,பெண்ணும் பிறந்தனர் , 1899  இல் பையன் மூன்று வயதில் விஷமிட்டு கொல்லப்பட்டான் . 1900  களில் மகளை தன் பொறுப்பில் தூக்கி கொண்டு கணவன் ஓடிவிட்டான் .இவ்வாறாக தாம்பத்தியம் முடிவுக்கு வந்தது   ஆனால்  விலக்கு பெற்றுக்கொண்டு ஜாவாவிலிருந்து ஹாலந்து திரும்பினார் . 1903  ஆம் ஆண்டு பாரிஸ் வந்தடைந்தார் .அங்கே நடனம் ,மற்றும் மாடலிங் வேலை செய்தார் . சுமார் 9 வருடங்களில் அவருடைய புகழ் பாரிஸ்,பெர்லின் ,வியன்னா ,ரோம் ,லண்டன் முழுவதும் பரவியி ருந்தது . செக்ஸ் மற்றும் நிர்வாண நடனமே இப் புகழுக்கு காரணம் .

 விரசமான   நடனத்தை ஆடி  பார்வையாளர்களை கவர்ந்தார் .

மட ஹரி மேடையில் வெள்ளை  குதிரையில் 90  சதவீத நிர்வாணத்தில் தோன்றுவார் .மூடப்படாத பின்புறமும் , பிரா அணியாத நட்டு போன்ற 

ஆபரணத்தை மார்பிலும் , கால்களின் இடைப்பகுதி துருத்தி இருக்குமாறு தோன்றுவார் .

செய்ய பிரான்ஸ் அரசாங்கத்தால் நியமிக்கப்பட்டாள்.  மட ஹரி ஜெர்மன் படை தலைவர்களை வளைத்து அவர்களிடம் இருந்து தகவல்களை பிரான்சிற்கு தெரியப்படுத்த நியமிக்கப்பட்டார் .மாறாக பிரெஞ்சு ரகசியங்களை  ஜெர்மனிக்கு கசியவிட்டது தெரிய வந்தது . ஆனால் உண்மையில் இவர் ஜெர்மனிக்கு தான் விசுவாசமாக இருந்து பிரான்சுக்கு தவறான தகவல் கொடுத்தார் .

செயின்ட் லசர் ஜெயிலில் அடைக்கப்பட்டு விசாரிக்கப்பட்டனர் .படைத்தலைவர் பியரி போச்சார் டான்  விசாரித்தார் .இவர் பாரிஸ் வாழ்கை நன்கு அலசப்பட்டது .இறுதியாக ஜெர்மனியில் இருந்து 20000  மார்க்  பெற்றதை ஒப்புக்கொண்டாலும் ,அவை களவு போன பொருளுக்கு கிடைத்த நஷ்ட ஈடு என்றும் , தான் உளவாளி அல்ல ,வெறும் டான்சர் தான் என்று கூறியதை எவரும் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை . மட ஹரி பெற்ற பணம் அனைத்தும் ஜெர்மன் எம்பசியால் தரப்பட்டவை என்றும் ,செக்ஸ் சேவைக்கு தரப்பட்டதாகவோ இதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளமுடியாது என்று அரசாங்க தரப்பு வாதிட்டது . இவ்வாறு 45  நிமிடத்துக்குள் விசாரணை முடிவுற்றது . என்றாலும் இந்த குற்றத்தை இறுதி வரை ஒப்புக்கொள்ள மறுத்து விட்டார்    

இறப்பு 

மட ஹரி நீலநிற கோட் , மற்றும் மும்முனை தொப்பி அணிந்திருந்தார் .மரண இடத்திற்கு ஒரு மந்திரியும் இரண்டு கன்னியாஸ்திரிகளுடன் வந்திருந்தார் .இவர்கள் மரண ஜெபம் ஜெபித்து முடித்தவுடன் மரண இடத்திற்கு சென்றார் . அவர் ஒரு எல்லைகளில் கட்டப்பட்டார் .
அவர்பி ன்னர் சுட்டுக்கொள்பவர்க்கு நன்றி சொல்லும் விதமாக பறக்கும் முத்தத்தை விடுத்தார் .இருவர் அவரை சுட்டனர் .அவர் தலை தொங்கியது
