She started out playing heroine roles in Pre-Partition films. She made her debut with Garib and Gawandhi (1942) at around sixteen years of age. Garib was made in Urdu and Gawandhi was made in Punjabi and directed by Mehboob Khan. In Garib, she played the role of Lata and in Gawandhi she played heroine opposite Shyam who played the hero. She became known for her roles in Pre-Partition Hindi and Urdu films. Her early years in films came with films like Najma (1943), Phool (1945), and Humayun (1945). Her last film before the Partition of India was Rajputani (1946) in which she played a supporting role. She decided to remain in India after the partition and she acted through the mid-to-late-1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and early-1980s. She played roles in big films like Halaku (1956), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Taj Mahal (1963) (for which she received the Filmfare's Award for Best Supporting Actress), Do Raaste (1969), and Pakeezah (1972). She retired in 1983 after the release of Razia Sultan (1983) in which she played Empress Shah Turkhan. She died in Bombay in 2004 after 21 years of retirement when she was 78 years old after suffering from a protracted illness. She had appeared in over 70 feature films in a career spanning 41 years (1942 till 1983).

The actress Veena, birth name Tajour Sultana, was born in Quetta, Baluchistan (now in Pakistan), on the same date as another beautiful actress, Naseem Banu, who had a decade over her contemporary. The two actresses were similar in looks and worked around the same period of the 1940s and 1950s. However, Naseem Banu retired from films and later concentrated on guiding her daughter Saira Banu after she made her debut with Junglee (1961).

Veena (also known as Veena Kumari) made her debut at 16 in a Mehboob Khan production, Garib (1942), and continued working until the 1980s when she was a part of Kamal Amrohi’s Razia Sultan (1983) as the empress Shah Turkhan. Her regal bearing and manner meant that she was often cast as royalty or as the daughter in a rich household.

Veena was meant to play Bahar, a court attendant to empress Jodhabai, in K Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam when it was first launched in November 1945. Bahar vies with Anarkali for prince Salim’s affection. When she realizes that the two are already in love, she reports their affair to Salim’s father, the emperor Akbar.

The actress had earlier appeared in K Asif’s Phool (1944) and the director cast her again in his magnum opus. However, the project, which began with Veena, Chandramohan and Nargis, got delayed over the years and was eventually completed and released with Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in 1960. Nigar Sultana stepped in to play Bahar.

VEENA WITH REHMAN IN TAJ MAHAL (1963)

In Taj Mahal (1963), Veena played Malka-e-Alam Noor Jehan, wife of the emperor Jahangir (Rehman), alongside the main pair of Shah Jahan (Pradeep Kumar) and Mumtaz (Bina Rai). Naseem Banu had played the same part of Noor Jehan in Sohrab Modi’s hit Pukar (1939).

Veena appeared quite often opposite Ashok Kumar in a number of films like Najma (1943), BR Chopra’s directorial debut Afsana (1951), and Satyen Bose’s Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). In the comedy caper starring the three real-life brothers Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar, Veena played Kamini, who puts Ashok Kumar's character Brijmohan off love and women altogether by her 'betrayal'.

Another standout role for Veena came in AR Kardar’s Dastan (1950), a remake of Samuel Goldwyn’s Enchantment (1948), with co-stars Raj Kapoor, Al-Nasir and Suraiya. She played Rani, the elder sister of Raj Kapoor and Al-Nasir’s characters. In real life, she had married Al-Nasir in 1947. The two artistes, who worked together in a number of films like Amarsingh Rathaur (1956), had two children and Veena continued acting even after marriage.

Her role in Dastan, as a haughty, vindictive head of the family, got her positive reviews. The Motion Picture magazine wrote in December 1950, “Veena puts over the role of this proud, defiant woman with an ability which really astounded me. She brings into life the spirit of grim, sordid obstinacy verging to hate, which cleaves and slashes its way with relentless persistence, the unbending hauteur, the scorn and the flash of anger and contempt. In Dastan Veena’s was the best work of the picture and the greatest role of her career.”

Other notable roles were in Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) in which she played Guru Dutt’s character Suresh Sinha's wife Bina, who separates from her filmmaker husband when he grows close to his newest find on the movie set. Another delayed film in which Veena got to essay a role was Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah (1972) in which she played Nawabjaan, sister of Meena Kumari’s Sahibjaan, who raises her lookalike daughter in the brothel.

PAKEEZAH (1972)

Veena retired in early 1983 after another Kamal Amrohi production, Razia Sultan, in which she again took on a royal role as the wife of emperor Iltutmish (Pradeep Kumar), empress Shah Turkhan.

The actress, who stayed on in India after Partition, died in Mumbai on 14 November 2004 after being away from the limelight for over two decades.

For most singers the first half of their career involves extending their repertoire, and the next half, trimming it to suit their ageing voice. B Vasantha, who turned 75 this month, is different. She still sings soulfully.

Like many of her songs, which have been wrongly attributed to her more celebrated contemporaries in the media and other records, her birthday has also been wrongly posted as March 20. “It is actually March 29. Every year my fans and others call and wish me on March 20. I keep quiet as I don’t want to disappoint them. After all the whole ‘vasantha kaalam’ is my birthday, isn’t it?” says Vasantha.

And while Vasantha has sung many memorable songs in Telugu and Tamil, Malayalam remains special to her. This gifted singer who enriched the Malayalam film industry with 166 songs, in a career spanning almost 25 years, has, however, never been given her due. For years she remained forgotten till she made a stunning presence at a music event held as part of the Golden Jubilee of Malayalam film music in Thiruvananthapuram, in 1994.

“I was pleasantly surprised when Devarajan Master, Arjunan Master and AT Ummer came to my house in Chennai one day. It must have been nearly 15 years since I had spoken to Devarajan Master, who had given me some of my best songs in Malayalam. They had come to invite me to sing in this programme, which I gladly accepted.”

On the first day of the three-day programme, Vasantha’s flawless rendering of ‘Thekkumkoor adiyathi…’ from the film Aswamedham was the highpoint. Set to a minimal background score, Vasantha transported the audience to a primitive world of tharavads, sacred groves, snakes, snake charmers and superstitions. The next day, she sang the immortal duet ‘Yavana sundari…’ from the movie Pearl View with KJ Yesudas. With just two instruments as back-up, the song completely depended on her voice.

“‘Thekkumkoor adiyathi…’ was my first song for Devarajan Master. When I reached the studio in the morning, there was nobody there. Then two musicians walked in. I had sung in that studio earlier, backed by a 100-piece orchestra and then in that huge hall, sat two musicians. When Master taught me the song, I realised that it was going to be a challenge. There was no margin for error. I had to be spot on in sruthi, tala, emotion and pronunciation. The recording was ‘okayed’ in the very first take and when I turned to the console, I found that Master had already left. Initially, I thought I must have bungled but the recording assistant told me that it was ‘first class.’ I was disappointed that Master had not waited to congratulate me. But I went on to realise that he was like that and the only way to know if he approved of your singing was when he gave you another song, which he did,” says Vasantha.

Vasantha, who hails from Machilipatanam, Andhra Pradesh, made her playback debut in the film Vagdaanam (1961) for Pendyala Nageswara Rao. “For the audition, I sang one of my favourite Lata Mangeshkar songs. Although I was trained in Carnatic music and in light music, I considered Lataji as my ‘manasa guru.’”

Nageswara Rao was impressed by Vasantha’s singing, especially her ability to reproduce the details in the song, but, in her own style. Vasantha began singing in Telugu and soon offers from the Tamil film industry followed. Her first Tamil song was a duet in the film Konchum Kumari with Yesudas, who was also singing his first Tamil duet. This pair went on to sing some of the best duets in Malayalam. Vasantha sang for stalwarts such as MS Viswanathan and KV Mahadevan before she made her entry into Malayalam films. “Pukazhenthi (Velappan Nair) was assistant music director to Mahadevan sir. When Pukazhenthi got an opportunity to compose for a Malayalam film, he invited me to sing. That’s how I entered the Malayalam industry.” She sang one song in the film Muthalali (1965), ‘Ponnara muthalali…’ along with S Janaki and Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi.

From then on, till 1988, Vasantha breathed life into nearly 4,000 songs in seven languages. She also composed music for several albums and for a Kannada and Tamil film in which S Janaki, PB Sreenivas, SP Balasubramanyam and others sang. She also has the unique honour of having sung for almost all the leading music directors of the time.

“In Malayalam I must have sung for more than 20 music directors. So many hit songs…,” says Vasantha as she begins singing the first lines of ‘Melemanathe nilipulayikku….’ (Kootukudumbam). When Vasantha speaks there is a pronounced Telugu twang. She mixes it up with snatches of Tamil and Malayalam. But when she sings, reading from the lyrics written in Telugu, her Malayalam is near flawless. How does that happen?

“I really don’t know. Those days you had to learn, rehearse and record a song as quickly as possible. No one had the time to explain the meaning of the lyrics. I used to watch the music director closely as he sang, picked up the parts that needed stress, noticed the rhythm in which he was singing and internalised it. Devarajan Master and Yesudas would often wait for me to make a mistake in pronunciation but were not able to find many,” says Vasantha, with a laugh.

Apart from the duets she has sung in Malayalam, Vasantha’s amazing skill in humming tunes has also been used effectively by composers.

MS Viswanathan used Vasantha’s humming to stunning effect in the duet ‘Pottu vaitha mugamo…’. from the film Sumathi En Sundari, while Devarajan did it in ‘Chandranudikkunna dikkil…’ (Othenante Makan), MS Baburaj in ‘Nadikalil sundari Yamuna…’(Anarkali) and MK Arjunan in ‘Sukhamoru bindu…’ (Ithu Manushyano?).

Despite giving a string of hits, somewhere down the line, Vasantha was abandoned. “I think it happened when Devarajan Master told me that he would not be able to give me songs, as there was a singer who was well-versed in Malayalam. The coming of P Madhuri hit my chances. But I don’t understand why other music directors chose not to call me.”

Vasantha, however, continued to do what she loved most, singing. She took every chance that came her way and turned it into a golden hit. She was conferred the Kalaimamani Award and Ugadi Award instituted by the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh governments respectively. The singer is disappointed that Kerala has not recognised her.

“I have won many awards instituted by institutions and fans, but the Kerala government, despite my having sung in many of the programmes organised under the auspices of the State, has never given me an official State honour. Somewhere, this hurts though I realise how much the people in Kerala love my songs.”

There are many who have told Vasantha that she did not know how to ‘market’ her talent. Looking back, she feels that this is true. “But then singing was not my first priority. I’m a homemaker, a mother to three children who are now settled in life. I never ran after offers. I know many singers who have achieved fame and popularity but have also lost out in life. I’m thankful to everything I have been able to achieve.”

Vasantha and her husband, Sudhakar, still travel a lot and she still sings at programmes, especially across Kerala.

“My daughter, who is constantly flying from one city to the other, advised me to take it easy. I asked her about her hectic schedule. She told me that it was because she loved her work. And so, I told her that singing was my work and that nothing gives me more joy than seeing the audiences enjoying with me.”

For Vasantha, singing is life itself.

பி.வசந்தா [பின்னணிப் பாடகி]
மாடர்ன் தியேட்டர்ஸ் அதிபர் ரி.ஆர்.சுந்தரம் தயாரித்த கடைசிப் படமான “கொஞ்சும் குமரி”யில் [1963] கே.ஜே.யேசுதாசுடன் ‘ஆசை வந்த பின்னே’ என்ற இனிமையான பாடலை இனிமையாக டூயட் பாடலாக பாடினார் வசந்தா. இருவருக்கும் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் இதுதான் முதல் டூயட்.

நடிகர் திலகத்திற்கு எஸ்.பி.பாலசுப்பிரமணியம் பாடிய முதல் பாடல் ‘சுமதி என் சுந்தரி’யில் ‘பொட்டு வைத்த முகமோ’ [1971]. இந்தப் பாடலில் பி.வசந்தாவின் ஹம்மிங் குரல் அற்புதமாக இழைந்தது. இந்தப் பாடலில் தனக்கு பி.வசந்தா பின்னணிப் பாடினார் என்பதை நினைவில் வைத்துக்கொண்டு அவருக்குப் பின்னாளில் கலைமாமணி விருதை வழங்கினார் ஜெயலலிதா.

மிகப் பெரிய நட்சத்திரப் பாடகியாக பரிணமிக்கவிட்டாலும் பல மொழிகளில் பல நல்ல பாடல்களைப் பாடியிருக்கும் பி.வசந்தா, பழைய பின்னணிப் பாடகிகளிலிருந்து ஓரிரு விடையங்களில் வித்தியாசமானவர். கல்லூரியில் பட்டப்படிப்பு படித்தவர். பின்னணிப் பாடகிகளுக்கு நல்ல மணவாழ்க்கை அமையாது என்ற பழைய விதிக்கு மாறாக, நிறைவான குடும்பத்தலைவியாக இருப்பவர்.

ஆந்திரப் பிரதேசத்தின், கடலோர நகரமான மசூலிப்பட்டணத்தில் பிறந்து, குண்டூர் ஜில்லாவில் வளர்ந்தார்.

அப்பா ரவீந்திரநாத், ‘பலே பெல்லி’ என்ற தெலுங்குப் படத்தில் கதாநாயகனாக நடித்தவர். பி.வசந்தாவிற்கு மூன்று தங்கைகள். ஒரு தம்பி.

மெல்லிசை நிகழ்ச்சிகளிலும், மேடை நாடகங்களிலும் பாடி வந்த வசந்தாவிற்கு சங்கீதப் பயிற்சியேதும் இல்லையென்றாலும், எதையும் கேட்டவுடனே பிடித்துப் பாடிவிடும் ஆற்றலிருந்தது. இசையமைப்பாளர் பெண்டியாலா நாகேஷ்வர ராவ் பிரபல தெலுங்குப் பாடலாசிரியர் ஆத்ரேயா எழுதித் தயாரித்த படமான ‘வாக்தான’த்தில், வசந்தாவிற்கு வாய்ப்பளித்தார். அந்தப் பாடல் ‘மா கிட்டய்யா புட்டின தினமு’. பீதாபுரம் நாகேஷ்வர ராவ்,எஸ்.ஜானகியுடன் இணைந்து இந்தப் பாடலைப் பாடினார்.

முதுபெரும் இயக்குநர் பி.என்.ரெட்டி வானொலியில் பி.வசந்தா பாடியதைக் கேட்டுவிட்டு, தன்னுடைய ‘பூஜாபலமு’ படத்தில் ஸோலோ பாடல் கொடுத்தார். நடிகை ராஜஸ்ரீ பாடுவதாக அமைந்த ‘வஸ்தாவு போதாவு’ பாடலை தனது இனிய குரலில் பாடினார்.இதெல்லாம் நடக்கும்போது பி.வசந்தாவிற்கு இருபது வயதுகூட ஆகவில்லை. சென்னை, வாணி மஹால் அருகே லட்சுமி காலனியில் ஒரு வாடகை வீட்டில் இருந்தார். எஸ்.ஜானகி இவருடைய குடும்ப நண்பர். பாடல் பதிவு இல்லாத நேரமெல்லாம் வசந்தாவின் வீட்டிற்கு வந்து செல்வார் ஜானகி.  

கவியரசு கண்ணதாசன் பாடல்கள் எழுதி ஆர்.எம்.கண்ணப்பன் தயாரித்த ‘தாயே உனக்காக’வில் பாடும் வாய்ப்பு ஒரு சில ஆண்டுகளில் [1966] வந்தது. அந்தப் பாடல் பிரபலமான தருணத்தில் மலையாளத் திரைப்படங்களில் அதிகமாகப் பாடும் வாய்ப்புகளும் வசந்தாவிற்கு வந்துகொண்டிருந்தது.

மலையாள சினிமாவில் முன்னணி இசையமைப்பாளர் பரவூர் ஜி.தேவராஜன் உள்ளிட்ட பல இசையமைப்பாளர்கள் வசந்தாவிற்குப் பாடல்கள் கொடுத்தார்கள்.

ஜி.தேவராஜன் இசையமைப்பில் தமிழிலும் வந்த ‘’துலாபாரம்’ படத்தில் ‘வாடி தோழி கதாநாயகி மனதிற்கு சுகந்தானா’ என்று வசந்தா பி.சுசீலாவுடன் பாடிய பாடல் பிரபலமானது.

1970-களில் இவர் பாடிய 2 பாடல்களை மீண்டும் பாட வைப்பதற்காக, முப்பது வருடங்களுக்குப் பின் ஒருநாள் ஒரு நாள், மூன்று இசையமைப்பாளர்களுடன் ஜி.தேவராஜன் வசந்தாவின் வீட்டிற்கே வந்து, திருவனந்தபுரத்தில் நடக்கப் போகிற ’50 வருட மலையாள திரை இசை விழா’விற்கு வசந்தா வந்து ‘திக்கும்கூர் அடியாத்தி’ பாடலையும், ‘பாள் வியு’ [Pearl View] என்ற படத்தில் கே.ஜே.யேசுதாசுடன் பாடிய ‘யவன சுந்தரி’ பாடலையும் பாடவேண்டும் என்று கேட்டபொழுது பேசவே செய்யாத வசிஷ்டரின் வாயிலிருந்து பிரம்மரிஷி பட்டம் கிடைத்த மகிழ்ச்சி இவருக்கு.

தமிழில் வசந்தாவை ‘ஹம்மிங் ராணி’யாகப் பயன்படுத்தும் ஒரு போக்கை மெல்லிசை மன்னர் விஸ்வநாதன் ஆரம்பித்து அதையே வசந்தாவின் முத்திரையாகக் கெட்டியாகப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டார். அது ‘பொட்டு வைத்த முகமோ’வின் மகத்தான வெற்றியுடன் தொடங்கியது. ‘வீட்டுக்கு ஒரு பிள்ளை’ யில் ‘இன்று முதல் செல்வமிது’, என்று தொடர்ந்தது. ‘லாலலா லலாலலா’ என்று வசந்தா இந்தப் பாடலில் இசைத்தது மிகவும் இனிமையாகவும் கவர்ச்சியாகவும் விளங்கியது. ‘ராஜா’ என்ற படத்திலும் [இரண்டில் ஒன்று நீ என்னிடம் சொல்லு], ‘ராமன் தேடிய சீதை’ யிலும் [திருவளர்ச் செல்வியோ நீ தேடிய’], ’பொன்னூஞ்ச’லிலும் [முத்துச்சரம் சூடிவரும் சின்னப் பொண்ணுக்கு’] வசந்தாவிற்கான ஹம்மிங் அத்தியாயம் தொடர்ந்தது. ஆண் பாடகர்களுக்குத்தான் வசந்தா இப்படி பாடவைக்கப்பட்டார் என்பதில்லை. ‘தாய் பிறந்தாள்’ என்ற படத்தில், ‘மாதுளை முத்துக்கள்’ என்று பி.பானுமதி பாடிய போது, அவருக்கும் ஒரு தாலாட்டு ஹம்மிங் கொடுத்தார்.

மெல்லிசை மன்னர் போட்ட பாதையில் ஷியாமும் [நேற்று வரை விண்ணிலிருந்தாயோ… ‘கருந்தேழ் கண்ணாயிரம்’], விஜயபாஸ்கரும் [’மணி விளக்கே மாந்தளிரே….’ ‘உன்னைத்தான் தம்பி’] நடந்தார்கள். அப்படியில்லாத பாடல்களை ‘இருளும் ஒளியும்’ படத்திலும், ‘ஒரு கிண்ணத்தை ஏந்துகிறேன்’…. [’வசந்த மாளிகை’] கே.வி.மகாதேவன் கொடுத்தார். பி.பானுமதி தயாரித்து, இயக்கி, நடித்து, இசையும் அமைத்த ‘இப்படியும் ஒரு பெண்’ படத்தில் ‘பொங்குதே புன்னகை’ என்ற பாடல், எழுச்சியும், குளிர்ச்சியும், இனிமையும் நிறைந்த பாடலாக வசந்தாவிற்கு அமைந்தது.

இளையராஜா இசையில் ‘புதிய வார்ப்புகள்’ படத்தில் ஜென்சியுடன் தந்தனனம் என தாளம் வரும்’ என்ற பாடலை ஜென்சியுடன் இணைந்து பாடினார். அந்தப் பாடல் வெற்றியடைந்தாலும் ‘நீ நல்லா பாடுறே, நல்லா பாடுறே’ என்று சொன்னதோடு சரி, இளையராஜா அதன்பின் ஒரு பாடலைக்கூட இவருக்குக் கொடுக்கவில்லை.

ஐந்து முறை அமெரிக்கா சென்று தனது பாடல்களால் ரசிகர்களை மகிழ்வித்திருக்கிறார் வசந்தா.




B.Vasantha

Boddupalli Bala Vasantha (born Mar 29, 1944) is an Indian female playback singer. She has sung in many Indian languages, most frequently in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Tulu, Simhala, Sanskrit and Hindi. With a career of more than three decades, she has sung over 4,000 songs and has won two National film awards.




Early life

B.Vasantha was born in Machilipatnam, Krishna Dist, in Andhra Pradesh to Kanaka durga and Ravindranath. She began singing from a very young age and had an uncanny skill of being able to reproduce the style in which other singers sang. Despite the insistence of Kanakadurga, her mother, who was an accomplished vainika, Vasantha did not take up classical music lessons seriously.

Career

In 1954, at the age of 10, Vasantha sang a devotional song in the presence of Prime minister Sri Jawaharlal Nehru in Nagarjuna Sagar inaguraion function.

Her father, a kind of all- rounder, had his contacts in the film industry too. That was how she was called for an audition. She sang one of her favourite Lata Mangeshkar songs and music director Pendyala Nageswara Rao was impressed. He said that although all the details of the song were there, it was not an imitation. Vasantha went on to sing in a couple of Tamil films for stalwarts like K. V. Mahadevan and M. S. Viswanathan before making her presence felt in Malayalam.

Vasantha’s first song in Tamil films was a duet. The song ‘Aasai vantha pinne….’ (‘Konchum Kumari) was with K.J. Yesudas who was also making his debut in Tamil. This pair then went on to sing some of the best duets in Malayalam.

“Pukazhenthi was assistant music director to Mahadevan Sir. It was through him that she got her first Malayalam film. The film ‘Muthalali’ (1965) also marked Pukazhenthi’s debut in Malayalam,” Vasantha remembers.

From then on, till 1997, Vasantha breathed life into innumerable songs. She also composed music for a one Kannada, one Tamil and four Telugu films. But they have not released.

When Vasantha talks there is a pronounced Telugu twang to it. She mixes it up with snatches of Tamil and Malayalam. But when she sings, her Malayalam is flawless. The song that made people sit up and notice her voice was ‘Karthikavilakku kandu…’ (‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’). Then followed the classic duet ‘Nadikallil sundari Yamuna…’ (‘Anarkali’). And Vasantha’s stock went soaring.

She said, “For me Malayalam is special. It is always Malayalam songs that I keep humming at home. My only prayer is to remember me when you think of programmes on old songs, or when you think of honouring some of us old timers,” says Vasantha with that warm smile of hers.

Personal life


B.Vasantha was married to Sudhakar. They have two daughters and a son named Surekha, Suchitra and Sarath.
