ALWAYS SIMPLE PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI BORN 1950 SEPTEMBER 17

ALWAYS SIMPLE
PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI
BORN 1950 SEPTEMBER 17

Narendra Damodardas Modi  born 17 September 1950) is the 14th and current Prime Minister of India, in office since 26 May 2014.[1][2] Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament from Varanasi. He led the BJP in the 2014 general election, which gave the party a majority in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament), for the first time since 1984 general elections.[3]

Since Modi's taking office as Prime Minister, his administration has focused on reforming and modernising India's infrastructure and government,[4] reducing bureaucracy, encouraging increased foreign direct investment,[5] improving national standards of health and sanitation and improving foreign relations.[6][7][8] Earlier, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi's economic policies (credited with encouraging economic growth in Gujarat) have been praised,[9] although his administration has been criticised for failing to significantly improve the human development in the state and for failing to prevent the 2002 Gujarat riots.[10][11][12] A Hindu nationalist and member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi remains a controversial figure domestically and

Early life and education

Modi was born on 17 September 1950, to a family of grocers in Vadnagar, Mehsana district, Bombay State (present-day Gujarat).[19][20] He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi (1915–1989) and Heeraben Modi (b. c. 1920).[21][22][23] Modi's family belonged to the Modh-Ghanchi-Teli (oil-presser) community,[24][25][26] which is categorised as an Other Backward Class by the Indian government.[27][28][29]

As a child, Modi helped his father sell tea at the Vadnagar railway station, and later ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus.[30][31] Modi completed his higher secondary education in Vadnagar in 1967, where a teacher described him as an average student and a keen debater, with an interest in theatre.[30] Modi had an early gift for rhetoric in debates, and this was noted by his teachers and students.[32] Modi preferred playing larger-than-life characters in theatrical productions, which has influenced his political image.[33][34]

At age eight, Modi discovered the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and began attending its local shakhas (training sessions). There, Modi met Lakshmanrao Inamdar, popularly known as Vakil Saheb, who inducted him as a balswayamsevak (junior cadet) for RSS and became his political mentor.[35] While Modi was training with the RSS, he also met Vasant Gajendragadkar and Nathalal Jaghda, Bharatiya Jana Sangh leaders who were founding members of the BJP's Gujarat unit in 1980.[36][37][38][39]

Engaged while still a child to a local girl, Jashodaben Narendrabhai Modi, Modi rejected the arranged marriage at the same time he graduated from high school.[40] The resulting familial tensions contributed to his decision to leave home in 1967.[41]

Modi spent the ensuing two years travelling across Northern and North-eastern India, though few details of where he went have emerged.[42] In interviews, Modi has described visiting Hindu ashrams founded by Swami Vivekananda: the Belur Math near Kolkata, followed by the Advaita Ashrama in Almora and the Ramakrishna Mission in Rajkot. Modi remained only a short time at each, since he lacked the required college education.[43][44][45]

Reaching the Belur Math in the early summer of 1968 and being turned away, Modi wandered through Calcutta, West Bengal and Assam, stopping by Siliguri and Guwahati.[46] Modi then went to the Ramakrishna Ashram in Almora, where he was again rejected, before travelling back to Gujarat via Delhi and Rajasthan in 1968-69.[47] Sometime in late 1969 or early 1970, Modi returned to Vadnagar for a brief visit before leaving again for Ahmedabad.[48] There, Modi lived with his uncle, working in the latter's canteen at the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation.[49][50]

In Ahmedabad, Modi renewed his acquaintance with Inamdar, who was based at Hedgewar Bhavan (RSS headquarters) in the city.[36][37][51] After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, he stopped working for his uncle and became a full-time pracharak (campaigner) for the RSS.[50] In 1978, Modi became an RSS sambhag pracharak (regional organiser), and received a degree in Political Science after a distance-education course from Delhi University.[52][53] Recently, the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed that Delhi University has blocked an RTI query seeking details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BA degree.[54] Five years later, he received a Master of Arts degree in political science from Gujarat University in 1982

Early political career, 1975–2001

On 26 June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in India which lasted until 1977. During this period, many of her political opponents were jailed and opposition groups (including the RSS) were banned.[57][58] As pracharak in-charge of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, Modi was forced to go underground in Gujarat and frequently traveled in disguise to avoid arrest. He became involved in printing pamphlets opposing the government, sending them to Delhi and organising demonstrations.[30][59][60][61] During this period, Modi wrote a book in Gujarati, Sangharsh ma Gujarat (The Struggles of Gujarat), describing events during the Emergency.[62][63]

He was assigned by the RSS to the BJP in 1985.[38] In 1988, Modi was elected organising secretary of the party's Gujarat unit, marking his entrance into electoral politics.[52][64] He rose within the party, helping organise L. K. Advani's 1990 Ayodhya Rath Yatra in 1990 and Murli Manohar Joshi's 1991–92 Ekta Yatra (Journey for Unity).[30][65] As party secretary, Modi's electoral strategy was considered central to BJP victory in the 1995 state assembly elections.[38][66][67] In November of that year Modi was elected BJP national secretary and transferred to New Delhi, where he assumed responsibility for party activities in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.[66][68] The following year, Shankersinh Vaghela (one of the most prominent BJP leaders in Gujarat) defected to the INC after losing his parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha elections.[30] Modi, on the selection committee for the 1998 Assembly elections in Gujarat, favoured supporters of BJP leader Keshubhai Patel over those supporting Vaghela to end factional division in the party. His strategy was credited as key to the BJP winning an overall majority in the 1998 elections,[66][69] and Modi was promoted to BJP general secretary (organisation) in May of that year.

Chief Minister of Gujarat (2001–14)

In 2001, Keshubhai Patel's health was failing and the BJP had lost seats in the by-elections. Allegations of abuse of power, corruption and poor administration were made, and Patel's standing had been damaged by his administration's handling of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake.[66][71][72] The BJP national leadership sought a new candidate for chief minister, and Modi (who had expressed misgivings about Patel's administration) was chosen as a replacement.[30] Although senior BJP leader L. K. Advani did not want to ostracise Patel and was concerned about Modi's lack of experience in government,

Modi declined an offer to be Patel's deputy chief minister and told Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee he was "going to be fully responsible for Gujarat or not at all". On 3 October 2001 he replaced Patel as Chief Minister of Gujarat, with the responsibility of preparing the BJP for the December 2002 elections.[73][74] As Chief Minister, Modi favoured privatisation and small government; this was at odds with political commentator Aditi Phadnis' description of the RSS as anti-privatisation and anti-globalisation.[71]

On 31 March 2013 Modi was appointed to the BJP parliamentary board, the highest decision-making body in the party,[181][182] and at the party's 9 June national executive meeting he was appointed chair of the BJP's central election campaign committee for the 2014 general election.[183] Senior leader and founding member Lal Krishna Advani resigned his party posts after the appointment in protest of leaders who were "concerned with their personal agendas". His resignation, which was described by The Times of India as "a protest against Narendra Modi's elevation as the chairman of the party's election committee", was withdrawn the following day at the urging of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.[184] In September 2013, the BJP announced that the chief minister would be their candidate for prime minister in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.[185]

Modi was a candidate in two constituencies: Varanasi and Vadodara.[186] During the campaign, he pledged to speed up government decision-making and remove bureaucratic hurdles which slowed development.[187] He won in both constituencies, defeating Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal in Varanasi and Madhusudan Mistry of the INC in Vadodara by 570,128 votes.[188]
The BJP-led NDA won the general election overall and the INC experienced its worst-ever defeat.[189][190][191] Modi, who was unanimously elected leader of the BJP after his party's victory, was appointed prime minister by India's president.[192][193] To comply with the law that an MP cannot represent more than one constituency, he vacated the Vadodara seat.[194] In what CNN described as "India's first social media election", Modi used Twitter, Facebook, Google Hangouts and holographic projections for campaign appearances. His victory tweet was the most re-tweeted tweet in India.[19

Prime Minister (2014–present)

Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He became the first Prime Minister born after India's independence from the United Kingdom.[196] He was the first to invite all South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation leaders to attend his swearing-in ceremony.[197]

His first cabinet consisted of 45 ministers, 25 fewer than the previous UPA government.[198] He started a monthly radio program titled "Mann ki Baat" on 3 October 2014.[199] He repealed 1,159 obsolete laws in first two years as compared to 1,301 such laws repealed by his preceding governments over a span of 64 years.[200][201] As of May 2016, more than 1.04 crore people have been trained under Skill India Mission launched by him in 2015.[2

International diplomacy

Modi visited Nepal on 8 August 2014,[250][251] and began a five-day trip to Japan on 30 August.[252] On 17 September 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India; financial memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements between the countries were signed,[253] which Modi called a new chapter in their economic relationship.[254] The prime minister had a successful visit to the United States in the last week of September, which led to an improvement in relations between India and the US.[255] In a 27 September 2014 address to the United Nations General Assembly Modi asked for the adoption of 21 June as International Yoga Day,[256] and a resolution doing so was approved by the 193-member body.[citation needed] He celebrated the same by doing Yoga in Delhi in 2015 and in Chandigarh in 2016.[257][258]

He announced an International Solar Alliance (ISA) at the CoP21 Climate Conference on 30 November 2015.[259] India became a member of Missile Technology Control Regime in June 2016.[260]

As of July 2016, Modi has completed 51 foreign trips as Prime Minister of India across 42 countries to strengthen Indian diplomatic relations with them.[261][262]

Personal life

In accordance with Ghanchi tradition, Modi's marriage was arranged by his parents when he was a child. He was engaged at age 13 to Jashodaben, marrying her when he was 18. They spent little time together and grew apart when Modi began two years of travel, including visits to Hindu ashrams.[30][263]
Reportedly, their marriage was never consummated and he kept it a secret because otherwise he could not have become a 'pracharak' in the puritan Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).[264][52] Although Modi kept his marriage secret for most of his career, he acknowledged his wife when he filed his nomination for a parliamentary seat in the 2014 general elections.[265][266

Awards and recognition

Modi was named Best Chief Minister in a 2007 nationwide survey by India Today.[292] In March 2012, he appeared on the cover of the Asian edition of Time, one of the few Indian politicians to have done so,[293] and made the 2014 Time 100 list of the world's most influential people.[294]

Forbes Magazine ranked him the 15th-most-powerful person in the world in 2014 and the 9th-most-powerful person in the world in 2015.[295][296][297]

In 2015, Modi was one of Time's "30 most influential people on the internet" as the second-most-followed politician on Twitter and Facebook.[298]

In 2015, Modi was ranked fifth on Fortune magazine's second annual list of 'World's Greatest Leaders',[299] which showed numerous changes from its first publication in 2014 because of its requirement that people who had been previously named had to "requalify with new achievements in the past 12 months".[300]

In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ranked 8th in the TIME magazine’s Person of the Year.[301] In 2016, his statue featured in the Madame Tussauds wax museum at London alongside other world leaders such as Barack Obama, David Cameron and Angela Merkel.[302]

She made her debut 18 years later in "Anurodh" co starring with her then brother-in- law, Rajesh Khanna.

The film was however a terrible flop due to the poor scenario but very unjustly, all the blame was put on her, an 18 year old girl...terribly unjust, because Simple did really well in that film and was a naturally talented actress.

Critics bombarded her with very negative comments. Any other actress, especially so young, would have given up...but not Simple Kapadia.

She did a minor role in "Ahsaas" and then showed in 1981, her talent in "Shaaka" where she was the leading lady. She played the role of the sweetest & sexiest thief ever and exposed her array of acting talents.

Several scenes on her in that movie are unforgettable. She acted in several movies after that and she did a wide range of roles- although these were secondary ones, most of the time she eclipsed the other actresses due to her beauty and talent.

Jeevan Dhara",
"Dulha Bikta Hai" where she did a remarkable Kawali dance,
"Tumhare Bina" where she was a sexy dancer in the song"Sweet Seventeen".

"Lootmaar" is another landmark in her acting career.
She played a vamp and her performance in the song"
Jab chayye Mera jadu" was so astounding and breathtaking that
she has remained in every bollywood lover's mind until today.

Despite several offers and after more than 20 movies, she decided to end her acting career in 1987 after performing in an item song for the movie Parakh.

Her resourcefulness being infinite, she decided to start a career as a Costume Designer. At first, she was doing costumes for her sister Dimple. Slowly, her reputation grew as a costume designer and it culminated in 1994 when she won a National Award for her costume design in Rudaali.

Later, she distinguished herself in movies such as Shaheed which made her one of the most sought designers of Bollywood.

Simple Kapadia was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. Despite this, she was still designing costumes for movies. After four years of very courageously battling cancer, she died peacefully in a hospital in Andheri, Mumbai on 10 November 2009.
