Vanisri was born as Ratna Kumari in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India in 1948. Her early life was marred with tragic losses: three members of her family, including her father, died of tuberculosis in a span of one month. When her father was dying, he told her mother to give young Ratna and her older sister a good education before marriage. Her mother kept a farm and sold goats milk to support the family. She sent young Ratna and her older sister to Andhra Mahila Sabha in Madras to be educated. While her older sister did well enough to go onto college, Ratna's interest wasn't in her studies, but only in her bharat natyam dancing class. When she was 12 years old, she participated in a dance function at her school. In the audience was a Kannada film director, who thought she resembled actress Savithri Ganesh, then the top female star in South India. He offered Ratna the lead role in his Kannada film, and she took it despite her mother's initial objections. The film became a hit, and she was offered more Kannada and Tamil films. As her visibility grew, Telugu film offers came to but only for small roles. Nevertheless, she took them and acted in her first Telugu film "Bheeshma" (1962). Soon, S.V. Ranga Rao changed her name from Ratna Kumari to Vanisri, an inverse name of his company "Sri Vani Films." She continued with supporting roles and comedy roles in Telugu films, and she finally made an impact in a sister role in "Sukha Dukhalu" (1967), a film written by the important filmmaker K. Balachander. It was a tragedienne role, and she looked beautiful, especially in the song "Idi Mallela velayani." The song became a hit, the film became a hit, and she landed her first heroine role in "Marapurani Katha" (1967). She continued with Tamil and Kannada films and had a hit with the Tamil film "Paal Polave Vaan Meedhile " (1969) and the song "naalai intha velai paarthu" that was picturized on her won a National Award. She was now consistently landing heroine roles in all South Indian films with top leading men. She was confident when she turned down the sister role in "Aatmiyulu" (1969) and opted for the heroine role opposite ANR. The producer and director relented after a couple of months and gave into her, and "Aatmiyulu" became a hit. She became the topmost heroine in the 1970's with more hits like "Dasara bolludu," and Prem Nagar." Around this time, the South Indian film industry was gradually converting from black-and-white to color films, and Vanisri took full advantage of her appearance in color films. She wore bright costumes and applied heavy pancake makeup to cover up her dark complexion. She applied variety of lipsticks and bhindis. She experimented with different hairstyles, and her striking appearance soon caught on and she became the trendy, glamorous star. Even though, she was taken into films because of her facial resemblance to Savitri, she decided she wanted to be a completely different star than her. To do so, she slimmed down, even if the producers had favored a heavier, curvier look. However, her greatest asset was her highly photogenic face, and she was friendly with all her cameramen who made sure she looked her very best onscreen. But, she never sacrificed the substance of her roles for her decorative appearance. She played dramatic roles and title roles, including double roles in "Vani Rani," "Ganga Manga," Iddaru ammayulu" and Secretary. She won acting awards for her superlative performances in "Krishnaveni" and Jeevana Jyothi. Her fame had reached its peak in 1976, when Filmfare magazine decided to do a special feature on the Telugu film industry and put Vanisri on the cover. However, another shift was occurring within the film industry as well as within Vanisri herself. She was working 16 hours a day and working in 14 films a year without any time off. The filmmaker on "Edurelini Manishi" (1975) wanted her to dance and dress more provocatively, and she objected, and although he relented, Vanisri saw the writing on the wall. Newer filmmakers like K. Raghavendra Rao were opting for newer, younger heroines, and he made permanent stars out of three younger heroines: Jaya Prada and Jayasudha in the blockbuster 'Adavi Ramudu' (1977), and 'Sridevi' in "Padaharale Vayausu' (1978). All three were vying for the top spot, the spot that Vanisri had held for nearly a decade. She knew her time was up, and she married her family doctor in 1979 and left films. Even then, she bend society's norms. She was 30, at a time when the average marrying age for a girl was in her early 20's. And she married someone who was slightly younger than her. Nevertheless, it was a lasting marriage, and she gave birth to a daughter Anupama, and son Abinaya Venkatesha Kartik. When she was pregnant with her son, she developed a thyroid problem and gained a lot of weight. Apart from her health problem, she also suffered from a longstanding court battle with her older sister and brother-in-law over property. They had handled her financial affairs when she was in films, and she had no knowledge of how much she earned and how much was spent. After a 12-year battle, the parties all reached a compromise and she and her sister's family reconciled. In 1989, Vanisri returned to films with "Athaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogodu," where she had a supporting role as an arrogant mother-in-law. The film became a hit, and the audience welcomed her in more senior roles. Although, she continued with such roles, she kept her children away from films, and they both became doctors. Vanisri used her name and money for humanitarian causes, such as contributing to schools and setting up senior center. She is also involved in politics.

Trivia (7)
She established a school, where 400 students have passed and have gone on to become doctors and engineers. She also planned to construct an old age home for senior citizens in the Telugu film industry called Adharana and own a mobile theatre to spot talent from various places in Andhra Pradesh. She is also involved in politics.
She retired from films as a heroine in the late 1970s, because she objected to heroines being asked to dress more provocatively and act and dance like vamps. She then married her family physician and has two children with him, who also became doctors. In 1989, she returned to films and television serials, playing supporting roles as mothers, aunts, and mother-in-laws.
During her peak period as heroine, she starred in 14 films a year and worked 16 hours a day.
S.V. Ranga Rao gave her the professional name of Vanisri.
She said that the most challenging roles of her career were in the Telugu films Iddaru Ammayilu (1972) and Krishnaveni (1974).
Of all her Telugu films, the three films that she hated the most are: Debbaku tha dongala Mutha (1971), Vintha Katha (1973), and Bombayi Priyudu (1996).
There are two phases of career. One as a youthful heroine where she reached the top. The other is a shrewish mother-type roles where she again excelled.
Personal Quotes (8)
[on whether any leading man proposed marriage to her] Never, all the heroes got married, the existing ones probably didn't have the courage, but I always wanted to marry someone outside the industry and someone who is not already married once. I have seen many actresses who didn't succeed with second marriages and the characters we played helped us to study society.
I was averse to the same hair style, knotted bun and a plait with flowers. I bought in novelty by stitching two sarees, putting polka dots on it and wearing black outdoors, would have constant arguments with the art and camera department because they thought it would look gawdy.
I would read a lot of novels and the description of the heroine influenced me and I evolved my own style in dressing and make up. I was the first one to try on different shades of lipsticks, bindis, nail colours that would match the sarees and preferred bright colours. . .
I never knew how I would look without make up. While others had a professional and personal life, my reel life was my real life. Even the jewellery or sarees I bought was worn during shootings because there was no occasion to dress up. I was such a novice, would sign a cheque but never knew how it would be encashed in the bank.
Whatever a person learns before turning 27, stays with him till his death helping him to sustain his living. I want to provide a platform for those budding youngsters. The industry has given me so much, I want to do something for it.
[on why she didn't want her only daughter, Anupama, to become an actress, who instead became a doctor] The span of a heroine here is only 3 years. Soundarya was the last actress who worked for a longer time. Why should I put my daughter to so much torture, sending her to acting school, etc., and asking her to make movies the aim of her life.
I have no godfathers. The name and fame, whatever I got is because of my struggle and perseverance.
[on why she remained a top star during the 1970s] The existing heroines had announced their retirement, Savitri became overweight, T. Kirshna Kumari and Jamuna were married and around that time, I got great roles with God's blessing. Also with every film turning out to be a success, there was no looking back. Kanchana was there, but she did her own genre.

KALPANA KARTHIK ,HINDI ACTRESS , BECAME MISTRESS OF DEV ANAND BY SECRET MARRIAGE BORN 1931 SEPTEMBER 19

KALPANA KARTHIK ,HINDI ACTRESS ,
BECAME MISTRESS OF DEV ANAND BY SECRET MARRIAGE  BORN 1931 SEPTEMBER 19

Kalpana Kartik (born Mona Singha) is a retired Hindi film actress. She starred in six films in the 1950s. She is the wife of Hindi film actor and film maker Late Dev Anand.[2]

Mona Singha was a beauty queen while studying at St. Bede's College, Shimla. She was introduced to films by Chetan Anand of Navketan Films with the film Baazi in 1951. She co-starred with Dev Anand, whom she worked with in all her subsequent films. Her screen name - Kalpana Kartik - was given to her by Chetan Anand during this period.[3]

Her other films were Aandhiyan (1952), Humsafar (1953), Taxi Driver (1954), House No. 44 (1954) and Nau Do Gyaraah (1957)
Career

Mona Singha, aka Kalpana Kartik, was born in a Punjabi Christian family in Lahore.[4] Her father was a Tehsildar of Batala in Gurdaspur District, and she was the youngest of five brothers and two sisters. After the partition, her family moved to Shimla. She was a student of the prestigious St. Bede's College, Shimla. In her graduation year, she won the Ms. Shimla contest and was noticed by Chetan Anand, a film-maker from Bombay. He was there with his wife Uma Anand, whose mother is Mona's cousin.[5] He convinced her family to allow her to join his fledgling film company, Navketan Films, as a leading lady. Thus, Mona Singha was re-christened Kalpana Kartik and she moved to Bombay (now known as Mumbai). Her first film Baazi was a huge success and went on to become a landmark in Indian cinema. Baazi was a gamble that defined the destinies of many luminaries all of whom got a career boost from the film.[citation needed]

Kalpana Kartik, became a part of Navketan when it was beginning to spread its wings. She was associated with the film company during its most momentous years. She started with Baazi, the debut of Guru Dutt and ended with Nau Do Gyarah, the debut film of Vijay Anand. Between these two films came Taxi Driver, which was the 'coming of age' film of the Navketan banner. It was Navketan's first super-success and also the film on whose sets Dev Anand secretly married Kalpana Kartik during a lunch break. Kalpana's time in Navketan saw four different directors take reign - Guru Dutt, Chetan Anand, Mandi Burman and Vijay Anand.

Kalpana Kartik worked as an associate producer for Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), Shareef Budmaash (1973), Heera Panna (1973), and Jaaneman (1976). Dev Anand played the lead role in these movies.

Personal life
In 1954, Mona and Dev Anand got married secretly while on a break during the shooting of Taxi Driver.[6] They became parents in 1956 when Suneil Anand was born. They also have a daughter named Devina. After Nau Do Gyarah, Kalpana quit films to become a home maker. Suneil has also acted in films.[7]

When Dev Anand played the role of the suave poet in Teen Devian in 1965, he left women audiences literally swooning due to his amazingly crisp looks and smooth dialogue delivery. He was after all the most handsome actor of his generation, who in his five decades in showbiz, had given the ‘big break’ to some of the big-name actresses of today, including Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim and in more recent times, Tabu. But he had his big break with the one woman he couldn’t get. This is the story of Dev Anand’s marriage, and his love life.
In spite of decades of being a heartthrob to millions, and the undying love he had for Suraiya, Anand stayed espoused to one woman, Kalpana Kartik, for all his life. However, the one failed relationship with actress Suraiya precedes Dev Anand’s marriage. Post-marriage though he was involved once with the actress Zeenat Aman but that was not for very long, and the matter fizzled out soon.

If Raj Kapoor was the showman of Indian cinema, Dev Anand was the show-stopper who could transfix your attention, by what his brother Chetan Anand described as, ‘those smiling eyes.’ We take a closer look at the love life and more of the legendary Dev Anand.
In 1947, the relatively unknown Dev Anand was offered the leading role opposite the much popular actress Suraiya. Suraiya was born Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh in 1929, and was a playback singer and actress- adept at singing and acting, and the first in the league of established singer-actors like Kishore Kumar, Sulakshana Pandit, and Farhan Akhtar of the post-independence era.

The first film of Dev Anand and Suraiya was Vidya in the year 1948, and it happened so that during the shooting of a song on a river, Anand and Suraiya’s boat capsized. Suraiya did not know how to swim, fortunately Anand did, and he swam holding Suraiya to the bank thus saving her life. Needless to say Suraiya felt indebted to Anand, and the two soon became friends. Their film Vidya was a success, and the Anand-Suraiya pair became the hit formula for producers to make the cash registers ring. The two were signed together time after time; at one point for three films at a row, which eventually led them to spend a lot of time in each other’s company.

By their fourth film, Jeet (1949), their love had blossomed and Anand finally proposed to Suraiya with a diamond ring. It was now clear that the duo were ready to take their relationship to the next level. Since they belonged to different faiths, they knew their families would never concede to their relationship. Therefore, during the making of the film Jeet they decided to slip out of the shooting with help of some friendly co-actors and crew members, and later eloped to get married. The plan for Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage would have worked, but apparently, the news reached the ears of an assistant director, who swiftly informed Suraiya’s grandmother, the family chieftess, Badshah Begum, who immediately rushed to the sets and dragged Suraiya home.

It was an emotional drama as usual. Suraiya’s grandmother Badshah Begum threatened to end her life if Suraiya tied the knot with Dev Anand, who belonged to a different faith. Many people say the old lady had a covert reason for opposing Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage, the fact that Suraiya was the highest earning member of the large family. Suraiya’s parents though were supportive but their opinion was harshly overridden by Suraiya’s maternal grandmother. Either way the relationship could not culminate into a wedlock, and Suraiya and Anand worked for one last time with the film Do Sitare in 1951. It is said after the completion of the film, the two met at Suriaya’s apartment, in presence of Anand’s elder brother Chetan Anand one last time. The doleful lovers sobbed throughout their last conversation, and later Suraiya threw Anand’s proposal ring into the sea. It was a sad end of a sweet love story, and needless to say the pair was shattered. The sweet dream of Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage was sent to it’s end.
Dev Anand was deeply depressed by his breakup with Suraiya, and it is said he almost decided to quit films. It was only when his elder brother Chetan Anand counselled him that he pulled up his socks and decided to to focus on his career. It was in 1951, that he decided to come out with his second home-production film Baazi, which was to be directed by filmmaker and Anand’s good friend Guru Dutt. Chetan Anand, who actually handled the production work at Navketan films, was looking for a fresh face for the part of the female protagonist. It is when he learnt about a 20-year old beauty queen from Shimla called Mona Singha, who happened to be in Mumbai around those days. Chetan Anand approached Mona with the offer for the film to which she obliged, and she was immediately bestowed the screen name Kalpana Kartik. Kalpana made her debut with Baazi (1951), which went on to become a massive hit.

It was deja vu for Anand, excpet this was to be a happy ending, with Dev Anand’s marriage. Just like it happened with him and Suraiya, Anand and Kalpana were offered numerous films together mainly owing to the success the pair brought to the box office. The pair went on to do six films together, and just how Anand fell in love with Suraiya by his fourth film together, he happened to develop amorous feelings for Kalpana during the making of their fourth film together Taxi Driver (1954). This time Anand did not waste any time, and gave out his feelings without hesitation, and surprisingly Kalpana reciprocated the same sentiment about him. Anand had the support of his elder brother, Chetan Anand. and it is said that Kalpana’s parents also assented their daughter’s decision, in spite of the fact that Anand and Kalpana came from different faiths (Kalpana was a Christian).

At the stroke of midnight, during the making of their film Taxi Driver, Dev Anand’s marriage to Kalpana Kartik was officiated at a quiet private ceremony. The sorrows and wounds of Dev Anand were finally healed, and he finally found his true soul-mate. Anand and Kalpana were blessed with a son, Suneil Anand, in 1956 in Zurich, where they were attending a film festival. They later had a daughter too, Devina Anand, thus completing their picture perfect family.
In 1971, Dev Anand discovered Zeenat Aman, an actress, who after a string of flops was all set to leave the country forever. Anand approached her for the role of his hippie sister in what would go on to be the cult classic called Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971). Zeenat Aman decided to give it a shot and the film met a huge success mainly due to Aman’s true to life performance. It marked the beginning of yet another pair, and Anand went on to work with Aman in four more films.

Apparently, Anand soon started feeling enticed towards Aman by the end of their fifth film together Kalabaaz in 1977. But the progress of their alleged affair was broken by none other than the filmmaker Raj Kapoor, with Dev Anand’s marriage still going on. The story goes (and you need to have it with a pinch of salt) that Anand was all set to propose to Aman on one night, but before the date Aman had to attend a party. She asked Anand to accompany her, and he willingly tagged along. It was at this party that Zeenat happened to meet Raj Kapoor, who in his inebriated state, began flirting with Zeenat Aman in a raunchy manner. What shocked Anand next was the sight of Aman reciprocating Kapoor’s every racy move with equal zeal and excitement. Needless to say, Anand soon called-off the date, and the two moved away to their respective paths since then. Since then he was never linked-up with any other actress ever, and Dev Anand’s marriage to Kalpana was his only one.
Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik remained espoused till his death in the year 2011. Anand surely left a lasting legacy, and his wife happens to be the only living member of the original Navketan films team, which gave some of the finest hits of the 1950s and 1960s. Kalpana Kartik now lives with her children and grandchildren in Mumbai, and in a rare 2015 interview she shared the following poignant words about her husband, the legendary Dev Anand.

“He was a really caring husband and father. People feel we separated, but that is absolutely false. Dev is very much in my heart even today, smiling and guiding me as only he can. I just cannot believe that he is no more. To me he is always Dev Anand my husband, right from our midnight marriage on the sets of Taxi Driver in 1954.”

TAMIL ACTOR Karthik Muthuraman born 13 September 1960

TAMIL ACTOR Karthik Muthuraman
born 13 September 1960

Karthik Muthuraman (born 13 September 1960), best known by stage name Karthik, is an Indian film actor, playback singer and politician. He is the son of actor R. Muthuraman.
He was first introduced by Bharathiraja in the film Alaigal Oivathillai. He has primarily appeared in lead roles in Tamil films. He has also appeared in some Telugu films. Karthik has been the recipient of the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and the Nandi Award. He has won four Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Tamil.

Early life and background[edit]

Karthik was born in Chennai to R. Muthuraman,[1] a popular Tamil actor. He is the fourth and youngest child of "Navarasa Thilagam" R.Muthuraman. He studied in St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai and at New College, Chennai and received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Film career[edit]

Karthik was first introduced by Bharathiraja in the film Alaigal Oivathillai. He received the Best New Face Award from the Tamil Nadu Government in 1980. His film "Vanna Kanavugal" was a super hit at the box office and K.Balachander praised his performance in the film. He collaborated with leading film directors like Mani Ratnam, K. Balachander, Bharathiraja, Visu, R. Sundarrajan, Ameerjan, R. V. Udayakumar, Priyadarshan, Fazil, Vikraman, Agathiyan, Sundar C., K. S. Ravikumar, P. Vasu and K. V. Anand.

During earlier stages of his career, Karthik worked three times with R. V. Udaya Kumar and enjoyed great success in all their ventures. Later, he formed a partnership with Goundamani in many comedy movies. He was also well received by Tamil audience for his performance in "Nallavanukku Nallavan" in a challenging role against Rajinikanth. His pairing with Rambha was a hit with audience as the pair provided good hits in the 1990s.

Karthik received another breakthrough in his career by portraying a full-length comedy role in Sundar C's Ullathai Allitha (1996) alongside Rambha and Goundamani, then collaborated with the director again in another profitable venture, Mettukudi. He went on to win critical acclaim for his role in Gokulathil Seethai, and turned appeared in K. S. Ravikumar's Pistha, which also won good reviews.

Karthik carried on his good streak at the box office in 1998, while also winning accolades for his performances in Vikraman's Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen, Cheyyar Ravi's Harichandra and Selva's Pooveli, and won a Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Actor.[2][3] He became one of the busiest actors in the industry during the turn of the decade by featuring in several medium-budget comedy films, notably in four further Sundar C ventures including the successful Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga (1999).

His career as a lead actor subsequently began to peter out in the early 2000s, with several of his ventures opening with little publicity or being delayed after financial troubles.[4] Towards the nadir in 2005, he signed on to appear in a negative role in Sathyaraj's Sivalingam IPS, but the film was shelved.[5]

Karthik opted to make a comeback into acting in 2010 and chose to appear in supporting rather than leading roles, much like his contemporaries Prabhu and Sathyaraj. He was first seen portraying a caring police officer in Maanja Velu, before winning positive reviews for his small role as a forest guard in Mani Ratnam's Raavanan.[6] He subsequently went on to play roles in P. Vasu's Puli Vesham (2011) and the Telugu film Om 3D, both of which failed at the box office. He also acted in a negative role in K. V. Anand's Anegan, where he appears alongside Dhanush.[7]

Political career[edit]

Karthik entered politics ahead of the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. He joined the All India Forward Bloc, and was appointed as the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu state unit of the party.
He led the party during its electoral campaign on 24 September 2006. He later started his own party Ahila India Naadalum Makkal Katchi in 2009 before the Lok Sabha Elections. He contested from Virudhunagar constituency and got only 15000 votes.

Personal life[edit]
Relationships[edit]
Karthik married actress Ragini his co-star in the film Solaikuyil in 1989 and the couple has two sons, actor Gautham Karthik and Ghayn Karthik.

Later he also married Ragini's sister, Rathi, in 1992 and the couple have a son, Thiran Karthik.[13][14][15]

Break from films[edit]

During the early 2000s, Karthik experienced a difficult period as he began to lose his popularity at the box office and new actors began to emerge in the Tamil film industry. He subsequently signed on to appear in several films,
which were either dropped, shelved or indefinitely postponed during the period. Films including Prabhu Nepal's Kadhale Swasam alongside Meena, Sundar C's Kadhal Solla Vandhen with Isha Koppikar and Gowri Manohar's Kashmir with Priyanka Trivedi, had audio release events but failed to have a theatrical release.[16][17]

Likewise, other ventures including Mahesh's Manathil alongside Kausalya, Soundarrajan's Click co-starring Prabhu and Selva's Kai Korthu Vaa progressed before being halted.[18][19]

Similarly, other projects in the early 2000s such as Gurudeva with Rimjim, Muthalaam Santhippil with Kausalya again and Enrum Unnai Naesippaen were dropped soon after filming had began.[20]

[21][22] During the nadir in 2002, Karthik was signed on by producer Keyaar to make a film titled Enna Peyar Veikalaam directed by Vincent Selva. Despite travelling to Pollachi for the shoot, the actor refused to emerge from his hotel room, and following an extended period of confusion, the film was called off and the Nadigar Sangam began legal proceedings against the actor.[23][24]
