A string of cameos later, the actress makes a comeback with a full-fledged role in 'Yathra Thudarunnu'
Lakshmi Gopalaswamy's last few releases saw her in cameo roles. The actress, who has a string of films with Mollywood superstars in her career graph to boast of, hasn't been making an impact with her recent flicks. But Lakshmi is set to break the jinx with a power-packed performance in director Jayan Sivapuram's 'Yathra Thudarunnu,' in which she stars with Irshad.
'I think some people have this feel that I'm a heroine exclusively reserved for the big stars, because it is with them that I have been paired with more often. I hope to break this notion with 'Yathra Thudarunnu,' in which I'm paired with young star Irshad,' Lakshmi explains. 'However, I've never felt the need for an image makeover.'
And it is precisely this, she claims, that has kept her off from playing the main lead. 'Somehow, I've been typecast in mother roles and I've turned down a number of them recently. Not that I have a problem playing a mother. But I don't go for such roles if they have no substance. I've been choosing my roles with caution and that's how I ended up in cameos.'
After her recent cameo in P T Kunju Mohammed's Veeraputhran, the next one will be in Priyadarshan's Arabiyum, Ottakavum, P Madhavan Nairum. Lakshmi is thrilled to do a 'conventional and bold portrayal' of a woman who battles with many a problem after her husband tests HIV +ve in Yathra Thudarunnu. 'I'm looking forward to working with fresh faces, be it actors or directors. I hope this film will set the trend,' says Lakshmi, who is also working on setting up a dance academy in Bangalore.
