Nita Dalal Mukesh Ambani (born 1 November 1963) is the chairperson and founder of Reliance Foundation[3] and a non-executive director of Reliance Industries.[4] With a family fortune estimated in excess of US$20 billion, she is reportedly India's wealthiest woman.[5] She is married to Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani.[6] She is also an art collector[7][5] and owner of the Mumbai Indians cricket team.[8] Nita is also Founder & Chairperson of Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai. [9]
Ambani has received numerous honors including a place in the 2016 edition of both the most influential women business leaders in Asia list by Forbes[10] and the fifty high and mighty Indians list by India Today.[11] She is the first Indian woman to become a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).[12]
Ambani was honoured by the Metropolitan Museum in New York for her work in philanthropy, education and promoting the arts.[13][14][15]

Nita Ambani (nee Dalal)[16] was born on November 1, 1963 in Mumbai[17] to Ravindrabhai Dalal and Purnima Dalal.[18] She completed her bachelor's degree in Commerce from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. She studied Bharata Natyam, and performed frequently.[19]

Ambani started out as the founder and chairperson of Reliance Foundation,[20] the CSR arm of Reliance Industries. She is also the owner of Mumbai Indians.[21] In 2014, she was elected to the board of Reliance Industries.[22]
Jamnagar Township Project[edit source]
In 1997, Nita Ambani was involved in the project of building a company township for the employees of Reliance’s mega-refinery at Jamnagar. The project involved setting up a well-planned, tree-lined and an environment friendly colony that would house more than 17000 residents. Today, the Jamnagar complex has one of the largest orchards with nearly 100,000 mango trees that is also home to a variety of birds.[23]
Reliance Foundation

Nita Ambani runs Reliance Foundation. The Foundation is an Indian philanthropic initiative which was founded in 2010 by Nita Ambani. It is affiliated with Reliance Industries Limited and is one of the largest private foundations in the country. [24] Foundation's initiatives especially in the areas of education, sports, healthcare, rural transformation, urban renewal, disaster response, women's empowerment and promotion of the arts and preservation of India's rich cultural heritage have been noticed by many. [25][26] Reliance Foundation is in the forefront of disaster management, relief & rescue operations and rehabilitation efforts during natural calamities in various parts of India including Gujarat, Chennai and Kashmir floods, Kedarnath tragedy, Marathwada drought etc. [27] [28] [29] [30]

Mumbai Indians[edit source]

Ambani is also the co-owner of Indian Premier League team, Mumbai Indians [31] who won the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013[32] and, the Indian Premier League in 2013, 2015 and 2017.[33][34]
She has also led the ‘Education for All’ (EFA) initiative as part of Mumbai Indians' way of giving back to society.[35] EFA has reached over 70,000 underprivileged children and created awareness for education using various media and digital platforms.[36][37][38]
Dhirubhai Ambani International School

Mrs Ambani is the Founder & Chairperson of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai. DAIS has been consistently ranked as one of India’s best schools by various publications.[39] It has been ranked India's top international School for the last four consecutive years by Education World. [40][41] [42] Media houses including NDTV and the Hindustan Times have ranked DAIS as the No 1 school in Mumbai four times in the last five years. [43] [44] [45][46]
IOC membership[edit source]
On 3 June 2016, Ambani was among eight candidates nominated for membership in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by the Swiss-based panel.[47][48][49] The election of these new members was held during the 129th IOC Session in the first week of August 2016.[50][51] Ambani was elected as a member of the IOC on 4 August 2016,[52] its first Indian woman member.[53]
Personal life[edit source]

Nita is the daughter of Ravindrabhai Dalal and Purnima Dalal.[54] She has a sister, Mamta Dalal, who works as a school teacher.[55] Ambani grew up in a middle-class environment in suburban Mumbai. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer.[56]
She met Mukesh Ambani as school teacher. She married Mukesh Ambani, the son of the Indian business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani, in 1985. After marriage, she worked as a teacher for a few years.[57]
They have two sons and a daughter together. Twins Akash and Isha Ambani are the eldest, and Anant Ambani the youngest. Akash Ambani, an economics graduate from Brown University, is now chief of strategy at Reliance Jio Infocomm.[58] Isha Ambani, a graduate in psychology from Yale University, is now a director at Reliance Jio Infocomm and Reliance Retail.
Awards[edit source]

For her initiatives on grassroot sports, Nita Ambani received the 'Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award 2017' from the President of India. She received the award on behalf of Reliance Foundation as its Chairperson.[59] [60]
