JILTED singletons have made a desperate plea to police after 100 mail-order brides did a runner after a ‘party’.

Due to the huge gender imbalance in China, bachelors have to go to extreme measures to find themselves a wife.

Mail-order brides have become a popular phenomenon and the frantic men can cough up £120,000 to secure a match.

It’s no surprise that matchmaking has become a lucrative business, but not all cupids have good intentions.

Police are hunting Wu Meiyu who is accused of committing mass fraud after helping brides escape from their new husbands. It’s believed that the matchmaker pocketed the grooms’ cash before allowing around 100 wives from the Hebei province, near Beijing, to make their escapes.

Officials are finding it extremely difficult to trace the brides, as many of the men don’t even know their names.

Li Guichen told the Financial Times that he “didn’t even get to know (his new bride) before she left”.
