Sanjjanaa Galrani (know known as Mahira) is an film actress & a philanthropist and who made her film debut in the Telugu movie Soggadu (2005). She is known for her controversial role in the Kannada film Ganda Hendathi (2006). She played a supporting role in the 2008 Telugu film Bujjigadu.^[1][2] In 2017, she played Chandri in the Kannada crime drama Dandupalya 2.^[3

Early years and personal life[edit]

Brought up in Bangalore, Sanjjanaa is of Hindu Sindhi origin.^[4] When she was doing her PUC, she received her first modelling offer. She continued her studies while working as a part-time model.^[5] She appeared in over 60 television advertisements,^[5] the most notable being a Fastrack advertisement with John Abraham.^[4] She has a sister, Nikki Galrani, who is also an actress.^[6]

Debut (2005)[edit]

After appearing in advertisements and as child artist in roles in the films Soggadu and Panduranga Vittala,^[7] she got her first starring role in Ganda Hendathi.^[5]

Her first release, however, was the Tamil documentary feature film, Oru Kadhal Seiveer. S R Ashok Kumar of The Hindu noted that Sanjjanaa, then credited under her birth name, was "very beautiful but has to work on her acting".^[8]

Ganda Hendathi, a Kannada remake of the Hindi film Murder (2004), itself an adaptation of the Hollywood film Unfaithful (2002).^[9][10][11] The film was released in Telugu as Mogudu Pellam O Boy Friend. A reviewer from nowrunning.com criticised her performance in emotional sequences,^[12] while Sify wrote, "Sanjjanaa has made a decent debut and she is extremely daring and does justice to her role".^[9]

In 2008, she made her official Telugu film debut in Puri Jagannadh's Bujjigadu, in which she played the role of Kangana alongside Prabhas and Trisha Krishnan. Although this was a supporting role, it gained her considerable attention and popularity.^[4][13] In 2010, she was seen in the Telugu film Police Police, which was followed by a cameo role in Huduga Hudugi. Her final release of that year was Mylari with Shivrajkumar, in which she played a journalist and was featured in a special song opposite Shivrajkumar. The film's success gained her offers in Kannada cinema. She won the Bangalore Times Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role Female in 2012 for I Am Sorry Mathe Banni Preethsona.^[14][15]

In January 2012, she played one of the lead female roles in Casanova, her maiden Malayalam venture. Reportedly the costliest Malayalam production of all time,^[4] and co-starring Mohanlal and Shriya Saran, the film saw Sanjjanaa portray a salsa dancer.^[16] Director Rosshan Andrrews signed her for the particular role, since she was trained in salsa.^[4] Her last release is her second Malayalam film, the Shaji Kailas directed The King & the Commissioner, co-starring Mammooty and Suresh Gopi. Later in 2012 she appeared in films including Narasimha, Ondu Kshanadalli, Sagar, all of which being Kannada projects, and Yamaho Yama.

In 2013 she appeared in Jagan Nirdoshi in Telugu which was made under Padmalaya Films and in Mahanadhi in Kannada, which was her first heroine-centric film. She was then seen in Nenem…Chinna Pillana?^[17] She is currently filming for a Telugu film, Saradha, directed by RP Patnaik.^[18][19]

Drug Case[edit]

Sanjjanaa Galrani was arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Karnataka Police on 8th September 2020 in connection with the investigation into the drug racket involving the Kannada film industry. Sanjjanaa is the second actor to be arrested by the CCB after Ragini Dwivedi.^[20][21] Her bail application was denied several times by the courts, with the CCB claiming that she has admitted to being part of the drug racket.^[22][23][24] She was later granted bail after spending 3 months in jail.^[25]

Sanjjanaa Galrani Forcibly Converted To Islam: Lawyer

Sandalwood actress Sanjana Galrani who was in jail for three months in connection with her involvement in a drug racket case is currently out on bail. But the actor is caught up in one more tangle. A lawyer from Bangalore city has lodged a complaint alleging that Sanjana Galrani was forcibly converted to Islam. A lawyer by name Amruthesh has lodged a complaint against a moulvi by name Darul Ulam Shavalilulla of tannery road, at the Cotton pet police station.

According to the complaint, actress Sanjana was converted from Hindu religion to Islam on 9th of October 2018, and was renamed as "Maheera'. As evidence, the renamed certificate has also been produced. In FIR, it is indicated that the actor was converted against her wish. The Cottonpet police have sought legal opinion in this connection and have decided to go ahead with further proceedings. A few days ago, some photos of the actress with a cardiologist named Dr Ajeej had gone viral on social media wherein it was stated that the two had got married and it was also said that records were found which proved the change of her name. Meanwhile. We hear that Sanjana who has come out of the jail is resting at a resort near Yelahanka township on the outskirts of Bangalore.

Bengaluru: In a serious setback to Sandalwood actresses Sanjana Galrani and Ragini Dwivedi, the Bengaluru police, probing the alleged drug abuse in the Kannada film industry, on Tuesday said the Central Forensic Science Laboratory report confirmed that the two were consuming substances.

Apart from the two actresses, party organiser Viren Khanna, former minister late Jeevaraj Alva's son Aditya Alva were among those arrested in the drugs case by the Bengaluru police. ADVERTISEMENT "I am proud to announce that our Bengaluru police had worked swiftly and impartially in investigating the cases. There is a good development in the case filed last year in September," Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant told reporters here. He said the inquiry by the CCB and the evidences gathered by the team painstakingly resulted in a positive report from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Hyderabad. Pant further said, "We have filed a charge sheet in the court, so I cannot say anything at this juncture but the FSL report has clearly proved that some people used to take drugs."

Hair samples of the accused were collected and sent to Hyderabad for tests and the report received now has established that they were doing drugs. According to police, the report will help during the trial of the case to prove the point that those arrested were drug users as well. Hailing the CCB for leading a speedy, fair and impartial investigation, Pant said this case was a lesson for the police officers because they were not sure whether they will be able to prove because this was never done so scientifically in the past.
