Zaheeda Hussain (born 9 October 1944), commonly known by her mononym Zaheeda, is an Indian former actress. Born in Mumbai, she is daughter of great Akhtar Hussain, who was film producer and the son of director Jaddanbai.[1] Her aunt was actress Nargis Dutt, and her uncle was character actor Anwar Hussain.
Zaheeda is best known for appearing in films such as Anokhi Raat (1968), Gambler (1971), and Prem Pujari (1970). She was originally offered by Dev Anand to appear as Jasbir/Janice in the cult-film Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), however she turned it down as she was reluctant to play the hero’s sister, and wanted to play the of his beloved (played by Mumtaz); the role of Jasbir/ Janice went to Zeenat Aman and she had shot to fame. Meanwhile, Zaheeda continued to play the heroine and majority of her later films flopped, leading her to eventually retire the film industry.[2]
aheeda Hussain was born on October 9, 1944. She is 70 years old. Her father’s name is Akthar Hussain. Her father was a film producer. The famous Bollywood actress Nargis Datt is her aunt. Her uncle Anwar Hussain was also an actor.
Zaheeda married a businessman Kesri Nandan Sahay and got settled, after retiring from the film industry. Zaheeda has two sons and one of her sons is in the film industry, working as a choreographer. He made his entry into the film industry as a choreographer in the movie “Angel” in the year 2011. Zaheeda has acted in a number of Bollywood movies. Some of the movies she has acted are “Anokhi Raat” that was released in the year 1968. In this movie, she appeared along with Sanjeev Kumar, “Prem Pujari” in the year 1970 and “Gambler” in 1971 in which, she acted with Dev Anand. She also acted in a movie called “Call Girl” with Vikram. After this film, she was offered to act as the heroine of the movie “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” in the year 1971. But she rejected the offer because she felt the character might be bold. This role, that was rejected by Zaheeda was later offered to Zeenath Aman and paved way for a great career for Zeenat Aman.
The first movie that Zaheeda actually signed was “Saajan Ki Galiyan”. But for some reason, this movie was never released. Zaheeda lived in a very big joint family in the marine drive area. Because of her family background itself a number of producers wanted to sign Zaheeda in their movies.
Some of the movies that were released later are “Teen Chor” and “Prabhat”, which were huge disappointments. Thereafter, she did not continue in the film industry. In the year 2002, she made her appearance in a Television serial called “Aamarapalli”, which was telecasted by DD 1 Channel.
Personal life[edit]
Zaheeda Hussain later married a businessman, Kesri Nandan Sahay and retired from the film industry.[2] She has two sons, one of which, Nilesh Sahay, made his feature film debut with choreographer Ganesh Acharya's' Angel in 2011.[1]
