1974 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 22 ஆம் தேதி சசிகுமார் ராயப்பேட்டை ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார்

சசிகுமார் – தென்னிந்திய திரையுலகில் மறக்க இயலாத ஒரு சிறந்த நடிகர். இவரை திருமலை-தென்குமரி படத்தில் ஏ.பி.நாகராஜன் அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். தொடர்ந்து பணத்துக்காக, அவள், ரோஷக்காரி, வெள்ளிக்கிழமை விரதம், திருடி, தாய்க்கு ஒரு பிள்ளை, தெய்வாம்சம், ராஜபார்ட் ரங்கதுரை, சமர்ப்பணம், மனிதனும் தெய்வமாகலாம், காசேதான் கடவுளடா, வீட்டுக்கு ஒரு பிள்ளை போன்ற பல படங்களில் நடித்தவர். 8.12.1944- இல் கும்பகோணத்தில் பிறந்த இவர் இவ்வுலகில் வாழ்ந்தது மொத்தம் முப்பது ஆண்டுகள் மட்டுமே

சசிகுமார் வீட்டில் சம்பவத்தன்று காலை எண்ணூரில் நடைபெறவிருந்த காங்கிரஸ் பொதுக்கூட்டம் ஒன்றில் கலந்துகொள்வதற்காக புறப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார் சசிகுமார். அப்போது பால் தயார் செய்து தரும்படி மனைவியிடம் கேட்க , அவரும் பம்ப் ஸ்டவ்வைப் பற்ற வைத்தார். அப்போது ஏற்பட்ட தீ இவரது மனைவியின் சேலையில் பற்றிக்கொண்டது. அப்போது எழுந்த கூக்குரலைக் கேட்டு மறு அறையில் நின்றிருந்த சசிகுமார் ஓடோடிச் சென்று விபத்தில் சிக்கிய தன் மனைவி சசிகலாவைக் காப்பாற்ற போராடினார். அப்போது அவர் சந்தனக்கலரில் டெர்லின் சட்டை அணிந்திருந்ததால் தீ அவரையும் எளிதில் பற்றியது

இவர்களது குழந்தைகளுக்கு அப்போது வயது பெண் குழந்தைக்கு ஆறு. இளையவர் விஜயசாரதிக்கு வயது நான்கு. இருவரும் வெளியில் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். கணவனும் மனைவியும் தீவிபத்திற்குப் பின் ராயப்பேட்டை மருத்துவமனை யில் தீவிர சிகிட்சைக்காக சேர்க்கப்பட்டனர். மூன்று நாட்கள் தீவிர சிகிட்சை அளிக்கப்பட்ட பின்னரும் சிகிட்சை பலனின்றி முதலில் சசிகுமாரும்; அடுத்த இரண்டு மணி நேரத்திற்குப் பின் சசிகலாவும் ஒருவர் பின் ஒருவராக மரணத்தைத் தழுவினர்.

1974  ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 22  ஆம் தேதி சசிகுமார் ராயப்பேட்டை ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார் . அவருக்கு சிவாஜி மேல் அளப்பரிய பற்று இருந்தது . தீப்புண் காயங்கள் மிகவும் மோசமான நிலையில் இருந்தது .  JIஎனவே அவரது கடைசி ஆசை சிவாஜியை பார்க்கவேண்டும் என்று மேஜர் சுந்தர்ராஜனிடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார் .

அப்போது தஞ்சாவூரில் சூரக்கோட்டையில் ரெஸ்ட் எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார் சிவாஜி கணேசன் .

மேஜர் சுந்தரராஜன் பலமுறை காலையில் இருந்து மாலைவரை போன் போட்டும்

சிவாஜி வர மறுத்து விட்டார் .ஏனென்றால் சசிகுமார் ஒரு துணை நடிகராகவே தான் இருந்தார் .

ப  த்திரிக்கையாளரை அழைத்து உண்மையை சொல்லிவிடுவேன் என்று மிரட்டியதால் வேண்டா வெறுப்போடு சசிகுமாரை பார்க்க வந்தார் .

இந்த சம்பவத்திலிருந்து சிவாஜியும் ,சுந்தர்ராஜனும் பேசிக்கொள்வதே இல்லை .அப்போதும் சில சில்லறை ஏடுகளில் இந்த சம்பவம் வந்தாலும் ,பெரிய பத்திரிக்கைகளில் வரவில்லை . இந்த சம்பவம் சிவாஜி மேல்நான் வைத்து  இருந்த மதிப்பை குறைத்தது .

அப்புறம் ராஜபாண்டியன் என்ற துணை நடிகர் தற்கொலைக்கு மூல காரணம் சிவாஜி கணேசன் மட்டுமே .இந்த ராஜபாண்டியன் தாலாட்டு படத்தில் கே ஆர் விஜயாவுடன் கதாநாயகனாக நடித்தவர் .

சசிகுமார் – தென்னிந்திய திரையுலகில் மறக்க இயலாத ஒரு சிறந்த நடிகர். இவரை திருமலை-தென்குமரி படத்தில் ஏ.பி.நாகராஜன் அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். தொடர்ந்து பணத்துக்காக, அவள், ரோஷக்காரி, வெள்ளிக்கிழமை விரதம், திருடி, தாய்க்கு ஒரு பிள்ளை, தெய்வாம்சம், ராஜபார்ட் ரங்கதுரை, சமர்ப்பணம், மனிதனும் தெய்வமாகலாம், காசேதான் கடவுளடா, வீட்டுக்கு ஒரு பிள்ளை போன்ற பல படங்களில் நடித்தவர். 8.12.1944- இல் கும்பகோணத்தில் பிறந்த இவர் இவ்வுலகில் வாழ்ந்தது மொத்தம் முப்பது ஆண்டுகள் மட்டுமே.சசிகுமார், இந்திய விமானப்படையில் பணியாற்றியவராதலால் கேப்டன் சசிகுமார் என்ற பெயரும் உண்டு. இவரது பெற்றோர் பெயர் ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் – சாவித்திரி. இவருக்கு குடும்பத்தினரால் சூட்டப்பட்ட பெயர் விஜய்குமார். இவரது தந்தை பெரியாரின் தீவிர ஆதரவாளர் ஆதலால் வெற்றி செல்வன் என்ற பெயரும் இடப்பட்டது. இந்திய ராணுவத்தில் பணியாற்றிய போதும் இவரது பெயர் வெற்றி செல்வன் மட்டுமே. திரைப்படங்களில் நடிக்கத் தொடங்கிய போது மாற்றி வைக்கப்பட்ட பெயர்தான் சசிகுமார். (இதே போல ‘நீலமலைத்திருடன்’ படத்தில் நடித்த ரஞ்சன், விமான பைலட்டாகப் பணியாற்றியதால் அவருக்கும் கேப்டன் ரஞ்சன் என்ற பெயர் உண்டு. இவர்களெல்லாம் ‘ஒரிஜினல் கேப்டன்கள்’).

சசிகுமார் வீட்டில் சம்பவத்தன்று காலை எண்ணூரில் நடைபெறவிருந்த காங்கிரஸ் பொதுக்கூட்டம் ஒன்றில் கலந்துகொள்வதற்காக புறப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார் சசிகுமார். அப்போது பால் தயார் செய்து தரும்படி மனைவியிடம் கேட்க , அவரும் பம்ப் ஸ்டவ்வைப் பற்ற வைத்தார். அப்போது ஏற்பட்ட  தீ இவரது மனைவியின் சேலையில் பற்றிக்கொண்டது. அப்போது எழுந்த  கூக்குரலைக் கேட்டு மறு அறையில் நின்றிருந்த சசிகுமார் ஓடோடிச் சென்று விபத்தில் சிக்கிய தன் மனைவி சசிகலாவைக் காப்பாற்ற போராடினார். இவர்களது குழந்தைகளுக்கு அப்போது வயது பெண் குழந்தைக்கு ஆறு. இளையவர் விஜயசாரதிக்கு வயது  நான்கு. இருவரும் வெளியில் விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். கணவனும் மனைவியும் தீவிபத்திற்குப் பின் ராயப்பேட்டை மருத்துவமனையில் தீவிர சிகிட்சைக்காக சேர்க்கப்பட்டனர். மூன்று நாட்கள் தீவிர சிகிட்சை அளிக்கப்பட்ட பின்னரும் சிகிட்சை பலனின்றி முதலில் சசிகுமாரும்; அடுத்த இரண்டு மணி நேரத்திற்குப் பின் சசிகலாவும் ஒருவர் பின் ஒருவராக மரணத்தைத் தழுவினர்.

சசிகுமாரைக் காண்பதற்காக எம்.ஜி.ஆர்., சிவாஜிகணேசன், ஜெமினி கணேசன், மேஜர் சுந்தரராஜன் ஆகியோரிடம் மருத்துவர்களிடம் காப்பாற்றுவதற்காக எவ்வளவோ பேசினர். பலத்த தீக்காயங்களுடன் மூன்று நாட்கள் போராடியபோது, வாழை இலையில் கிடத்தப்பட்டு, நடிகை கே.ஆர்.விஜயாவின் செலவிலும், ஏவி.எம். சரவணனின் ஏற்பாட்டின் பேரிலும்  ஒரே அறையில் ஆறு ஏர்-கூலர்கள் பொருத்தப்பட்டு சிகிச்சையளிக்கப்பட்டும் பலனின்றி 24-8-1974 அன்று அடுத்தடுத்து இருவரும் உயிரிழந்தனர். பெருந்தலைவர் காமராஜர் இறுதி அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினார். இவர்களது இறுதிச் சடங்குகள் இராணுவ மரியாதையுடன் கண்ணம்மா பேட்டை இடுகாட்டில் நடத்தப்பட்டன.

அந்நேரம் சின்னஞ்சிறுவனாக இருந்த அவர்களின் ஒரே மகன் விஜயசாரதி-யும் அவரது அக்காவும் அப்போதைய நடிகர் சங்கத் தலைவராக இருந்த நடிகர் திலகம், செயலாளர் மேஜர், பொருளாளர் வி.கே.ஆர். ஆகியோரின் பராமரிப்பில் வளர்க்கப்பட்டார்கள்.  இவர்களது பாட்டி பெரும் சிரமங்களின் மத்தியிலேயே இவர்களை வளர்த்து ஆளாக்கினார்.

(விஜயசாரதி இப்போது தொலைக்காட்சித் துறையில் நடிகர் மற்றும் அறிவிப்பாளராக புகழ்பெற்று விளங்குகிறார்). இப்போதும் சசிகுமாரின் திரைப்படங்களோ அல்லது பாடல் காட்சிகளோ ஏதேனும் ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சியில் அன்றாடம் ஒளிபரப்பாகிக் கொண்டேயிருக்கிறது.

Today, when we hear the name Sasikumar, we’ll immediately think of Sasikumar of the film ‘Naadodigal’. But there was a Sasikumar of yesteryears, who had found a permanent place in the hearts of the cine-goers … some interesting titbits about the hero of yesterday …

Sasikumar was an army man before entering the celluloid world. He was born on 8-12-1944 to the couple Radhakrishnan – Savithri in Kumpakonam. Radhakrishnan had worked as a Hindi professor in Trichy National College. From his early years, Sasikumar displayed staunch loyalty and love to the nation, Tamil Nadu and fine arts. After completing B. Sc., he joined the army, served for ten years and rose to the rank of captain. He won medals for his gallantry during the war with China in the year 1962 and with Pakistan in 1965. After these wars, he resigned from the army and founded a drama troupe of his own and started acting in his own stage plays. Director A. P. Nagarajan, who happened to watch one of his plays, introduced him to cinema through his film ‘Thirumalai thenkumari’. Then followed ‘Arangetram’, ‘Punnakai’, ‘Aval’, ‘Malai naattu mangai’, ‘Vellikkizhamai viratham’, ‘Bharatha vilas’, ‘Kaasethaan katavulataa’, ‘Kalyaanamaam kalyaanam’, ‘Samarpanam’, ‘Pirayachitham’, ‘Suriyakaanthi’, ‘Thirutan’, ‘Rajapart Rangadurai’ etc. he was dear to all in the industry.

He used to visit his parents and relatives at Kumpakonam. My native place is also Kumpakonam and I wanted to meet Sasikumar there during one of his visits. I was studying in the 11th Std. (SSLC) and I met Sasikumar with the help of his relatives. He was happy when I reviewed his films. But when he noticed my school-books and notebooks, he understood that I came to see him during my class hours. He advised me very strongly that it was not correct to sacrifice classes for the sake of seeing film people or watching movies and that education should be the first priority. I met him again at the premises of Nadigar Sangam in Chennai. When I reminded him about the Kumpakonam incident, he repeated his advice in a warm tone. When I asked him for some details about his personal life and career, he asked me whether I had joined any cinema magazine. I told him that after finishing my studies, I intended joining the print media Excerpts from his talk:

“My given name is Vijaykumar. My father is a staunch follower of ‘Thanthai’ Periyar. Periyar named me ‘Vetriselvan’. When I was in the army, my name was ‘Vetriselvan’ only. I changed my name to Sasikumar when I entered cinema. I am a patriot and I am a member of the Congress Party. I’ll strive hard for the welfare of the party as well as for the nation till my end. I don’t expect anything in return. Cinema is the live-wire of my life. I’ll not leave cinema till my last breath.”

When I met his son Vijayasarathi recently, I recalled these words of his father with excitement. When I asked him whether he remembered the incident in which both his parents died of fire accident, he started crying and narrated the incident in between sobs. “My father was preparing to attend the Congress Party’s public meeting at Ennore. He wanted to take milk before leaving for the meeting. When my mother lit the pump stove to warm the milk for all of us, the stove exploded. My mother’s sari caught fire. My sister and I, who were playing outside the house rushed into the house on hearing the noise. I was just four and my sister was six at that time. When my father rushed to the kitchen and tried to put down the fire by hugging my mother tightly, the fire caught hold of him also. Both rushed to the bathroom and opened the shower to douse the fire.

Both were admitted to the hospital with the help of our neighbors. My father signaled to me and Nandini to tell that they would be back safely. They were admitted to the Royapettah Hospital. Leading actors including MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and Major Sunderrajan came and spoke to the doctors. K. R. Vijaya madam and AVM Saravanan both brought air-coolers and kept them in the room of my parents. Many helped by donating blood. Intense treatment was given for three days. My father requested everyone to sing ‘Janaganamana’ and chant ‘Vande matharam’ during his last hours. On 24-8-1974, both died, not responding to the treatment. My mother died two hours after my father died. The last rites were performed at Kannammapet with military honors. Kamaraj Aiyah paid his last homage. The entire film industry was present. Sivaji Ganesan raised the slogan “Jai Hind” with others accompanying him.

Our grandmother brought us up amid great difficulties. Almost daily, some channel or other will be telecasting one of my father’s films. Whenever I watch them, my eyes well up with tears of joy. “

Sasikumar’s attractive personality and distinct talent will always remain fresh in our hearts!
