MADURAI MANI IYER BIOGRAPHY 1912 OCTOBER 25 -JUNE 8,1968

மதுரை மணி ஐயர் (அக்டோபர் 25, 1912 - ஜூன் 8, 1968) கருநாடக இசையுலகில் புகழ்பெற்ற ஒரு இசைக்கலைஞர். சுவரம் பாடுவதில் வல்லுநராகக் கருதப்பட்டார்.

வாழ்க்கைக் குறிப்பு[தொகு]

இவரின் இயற்பெயர் சுப்பிரமணியன், காலப்போக்கில் இது சுருங்கி மணி ஆனது. மதுரையில் எம். எஸ். இராமசுவாமி ஐயர், சுப்புலக்சுமி ஆகியோருக்குப் பிறந்தவர். தகப்பனார் இராமசுவாமி ஐயர், அக்காலத்தில் பிரபலமான இசைக்கலைஞரான வித்துவான் புஷ்பவனத்தின் சகோதரர்.

சிறு வயதிலேயே கருநாடக இசையை முறையாகக் கற்றுக் கொண்டார். இவரது முதலாவது ஆசிரியர் ஸ்ரீ ராகம் பாகவதர். ராகம் பாகவதர் எட்டயபுரம் ராமச்சந்திர பாகவதருடைய மாணவர். அரிகேசநல்லூர் முத்தையா பாகவதருடன் தொடர்பு ஏற்பட்டு அவரது மதுரை தியாகராஜ சங்கீத வித்தியாலயத்தில் மாணவராகச் சேர்ந்தார்.

மணி ஐயர் தம் பெருநோய் காரணமாகத் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ளவில்லை.

ஆங்கிலக் கல்வியில் தீவிரமான ஈடுபாடு கொண்டவர் மணி அய்யர். ஆங்கில இலக்கியத்தை விரிவாக வாசித்தவர். தமிழிலக்கியத்தில் தி. ஜானகிராமன், சுந்தர ராமசாமி போன்றவர்களுடன் நெருக்கமான உறவுள்ளவராக இருந்தார்.

சுவரம் பாடுவதில் நிகரற்று விளங்கிய மதுரை மணி, ராக ஆலாபனைகளை தேவையானபோது விஸ்தாரமாகப் பாடுவார். அந்தந்த கிருதிக்குத் தக்கவாறு சுருக்கமாகவோ, நடுத்தரமாகவோ, விவரித்தோ பாடும் திறன் மணியின் சிறப்பு. அவரால் பிரபலம் அடைந்த கீர்த்தனைகள் ஏராளம். நளினகாந்தி போன்ற அப்போது அபூர்வமாக இருந்த ராகங்களை சர்வ சாதாரணமாக பாடும் திறன் கொண்டவர்.

Madurai Mani Iyer was undeniably one of the greatest exponents of Carnatic music. In fact, it wouldn’t be out of place to declare him among the best musicians India has ever produced. Tales of overflowing audience held in trance during his concerts which often spilled over midnight, or Ricksha-wallahs refusing any passengers until the end of his concert bear testimony to this statement.

Mani Iyer was both a people’s and a pundit’s musician. His music could effortlessly sway a music scholar and a novice at the same time. In his time, he was largely responsible for bringing Carnatic music to the masses, and his ability to attract uninitiated listeners of Carnatic music is unsurpassed and remains undiminished, even 48 years after his demise.

Words such as “Genius” and “inimitable” are usually used to describe his music. However, confining his music to an adjective really does not do justice to it. His music is something divine, it’s a bridge which connects to a place that is otherwise inaccessible to us mortals. It’s an experience.
