The Han Dynasty began in 206B.C and ended in 220A.D. It has close ties with the previous Zhou Dynasty.Participants followed a number of ancient customs as they were married on the shore of Bohai Bay in Caofeidian.Large scale weddings are popular as they save the couple money, while not cheapening the event itself

Dozens of brides and grooms descended on Hebei in northern China over the weekend to be married, along with 131 of their peers in a mass wedding.The first international, large scale wedding in the Hebei area married sixty-six couples in a traditional Han Dynasty ceremony. The ceremony itself dates back thousands of years and in modern times can be performed in about 20 minutes.

The traditional Han wedding includes rites of Woguan Li, which is washing ones hands with flowing water - generally with the help of a bridesmaid and best man - Tonglao, where each person eats one piece of meat and Hejin, where the couple will cross arms with their glasses and drink a bitter wine.

Also included in the ceremony is the rite of Jiefa, or tying the hair. In this, the bride and groom each cut a small lock of head hair and put them together, wrapped with red thread. In some cases, the hair is then placed in to a small pouch and given to the newlyweds as a charm.

The ceremony itself is considered to be quintessential Chinese rite for all, and the rites come from the Zhou Book of Rites - is a series of texts outlining the social forms, administration, and ceremonial rites of the Zhou dynasty as understood in the early Han period.

With stunning views of the Bohai Bay, the couples were dressed in traditional robes as they moved in a procession along the waterside.
