1926 AUGUST 16 - 2008 FEBRUARY 1

Remembering yesteryear Hindi film actress Manorama on her birth anniversary.

Born Erin Issac Daniel to an Irish mother and an Indian Christian father in Lahore, the actress was given the name Manorama after she played a character by that name in the 1941 film, Khazanchi. She often played a tyrannical aunt or mother with a frown for a face and an angry rant up her sleeve.

The woman with exaggerated eyelashes and expressions was popularly known for roles like the comical tyrant aunt in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Ek Phool Do Maali’, ‘Do Kaliyan’ and ‘Caravan’. Some of her other memorable films include Half Ticket, Dus Lakh, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Sharda, Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong, Mujhe Jeene Do, Mehboob ki Menhdi, Bombay to Goa and Lawaaris. In the 90s she did a cameo in Mahesh Bhat’s Junoon (1992). Her last movie was Deepa Mehta’s Water (2005). The actress also acted in a few television serials later. Through her career, she acted in over 150 films.

She was married to Rajan Haksar, also an actor, and after the partition of India in 1947 the couple shifted to Mumbai, where Raja became a producer, while Manorama reestablished her acting career.
