BISWAJIT ,BENGALI-HINDI ACTRESS BORN 1936 DECEMBER 14

BISWAJIT ,BENGALI-HINDI ACTRESS
BORN 1936 DECEMBER 14

Biswajit (full name Biswajit Ranjitkumar Chatterjee, Bengali: বিশ্বজিৎ চ্যাটার্জী, Hindi: बिस्वजित चॅटर्जी) is a Bengali/Hindi actor. He was born in Calcutta, West Bengal and later went to Bombay to do Hindi films.
Early career[edit source]
After films in Calcutta including Mayamrigo (1960) and Dui Bhai (1961), Biswajit relocated to Bombay. In 1962, he performed in the film Bees Saal Baad, which was followed by Kohraa, Bin Badal Barsat, Majboor, Kaise Kahoon and Paisa Ya Pyaar.

His filmography includes Mere Sanam (1965), Shehnai, Aasra (1964), Night in London, Yeh Raat Phir Naa Aaygi (1966), April Fool (1964), Kismat (1968), Do Kaliyan (1968), Ishq Par Zor Nahin and Sharaarat (1972). He was mostly paired with notable actresses such as Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Mumtaz, Mala Sinha and Rajshree.

Biswajit appeared in Rekha's debut film Anjana Safar (1969) (later re-titled Do Shikaari). Though Anjana Safar was blocked by the censors and not released until 10 years later, a scene from the film which shows him kissing Rekha appeared on the pages of the Asian edition of Life magazine.[1] Rekha had complained that during filming of one of the romantic scenes, Biswajit unexpectedly smooched her for 5 minutes against her will, and the entire crew started cheering and whistling while she was in tears. [2]

How Biswajeet brought on India's Kissing Crisis
.

The story goes like this: During the shooting of a film called Anjana Safar (1969) a newcomer named Rekha was slyly kissed by Biswajeet. The scene was captured on camera The film ran into censor troubles, took almost ten years to complete and was finally released as Do Shikari (1979). Meanwhile, the 'kiss scene' was apparently already famous because it made it to the cover of year 1969 Asian edition of Life Magazine, probably for the story 'India's Kissing Crisis' based on hysteria brought forth by release of Khosla Committee Report that claimed "kissing or nudity can't be banned unless a court of law judges it obscene." [Outlook article from 2001].

“No court of law will hold that a kiss by itself, irrespective of the circumstances in which it takes place or the individuals between whom it is exchanged, is indecent or immoral. In the same way, nudity of the human form may or may not be indecent. If there is, for instance, a brief shot of a woman undressing and entering a bathing pool, as in the film The Visit, no suspicion of indecency or immorality attaches to the shot which is relevant to the story. On the other hand, there are many scenes of cabaret performances or striptease sequences in Indian as well as foreign film which are obviously introduced in order to titillate the senses and thus make the film commercially saleable.
Many of these scenes would be declared obscene even by the most liberal-minded judges."~ the report as cited by A.G. Noorani in essay Cesorship and State. Sep. 10-23, 2011, Frontline. The references in the report, 'The Visit', cabaret, already seem a bit dated and as extract seems a distortion, word 'suspicion' and 'obviously' stand out sore.

Between acting in Bollywood movies, Biswajit has returned to Calcutta to act in Bengali films as well. Notable ones among them include Chowringhee (1968) and Garh Nasimpur with Uttam Kumar and Kuheli and much later, Srimaan Prithviraj (1973), Jai Baba Taraknath (1977) and Amar Geeti (1983).

Apart from being an actor, Biswajeet is also a singer and performs in concerts. In the 1970s, he cut a disc of two Bengali modern numbers [" Tomar chokher kajole..." and " Jay jay din..."], composed by Salil Choudhury.

Later career[edit source]
In 1975, Biswajit produced and directed his own film, Kahte Hai Mujhko Raja. He also acted in the film with stars such as Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, and Rekha (reteaming with her after Anjana Safar). R.D. Burman did the music. Later he went back to acting. He will be making a film on netaji subash chandra bose life(will be in Hindi English and Bengali)and also continuing with acting in a new untitled Hindi film (murder mystery) with his younger daughter actress Pryma Chatterji.

Songs[edit source]
The veteran actor is very famous because of his unforgettable and heart touching love songs.

List of his some songs :

Aa gale lag ja mere sapne mere apne
Aankhon me qayaamat ke kaajal, honthon pe gazab kii laali hai
Aao huzur tumko, sitaron me le chaluun
Aap se maine meri jaan mohabbat ki hai
Ae janeman, ae janeman, le gya dil ko wo tera bholapan
Akela hoon main humsafar dhundhta hoon
April fool bnaya, to unko gussa aaya
Bahosh-o-hwaas me diwana
Bam bam bam lahiri lehar lehar nadiya gehri
Bequarar karke hamen yun na jaaiye

Dhani chunari pahen, saj ke ban k dulhan
Dil ne pyar kiya hai ek bewafa se
Diwana keh ke logon ne
Ek baar zaraa phir kah do, mujhe sharmaake tum diwana
Haan ji haan ji haan ji are haan ji baba
Hamdam mere, maan bhi jao
Hamne to dil ko aapke kadmon pe rakh diya
Hue hain tumpe aashiq ham, bhala maano buraa maano
Huzurevala, jo ho ijaazat, to ham ye saare, jahaan se kah den
Jaaiye aap kahan jaayenge, ye nazar laut ke fir aayegi
Jab jaag uthe araman, to kaise neend aaye
Kahin deep jale, kahin dil
Kahin karti hogi, vo mera, intazar
Kajara muhabbat vala, ankhiyon me aisaa dala
Kal rat sapne me aaye the tum, mere mehboob, mere mehboob
Kanto me phansa aanchal, julfo me phansa ye dil
Keh do keh do, jahan se keh do
Laakhon hain yahan dilvale, aur pyaar nahin milta
Main shayad tumhare liye ajnabi hoon
Mera pyar wo hai ki mar ke bhi tumko
Meri muhabbat, pak muhabbat
Mil le, mil le, mil le, mujhe choo nhi waise hi mil le
Mizaj e garami, dua hai aapki
Na jhatko julf se pani, ye moti phut jayenge
Na ye jamin thi, na aasman tha
Najar na lag jaye kisi ki rahon me
Panchhi re wo panchhi, ud ja re wo panchhi
Phir miloge kabhi is baat kaa vada karlo
Pukarta chala hun main
Qamar patli, najar bijali
Roka kai baar maine dil ki umang ko
Rokna hai agar, rok lije magar, chand chhupane se phle chli jaungi
Sadiyon purani apni kahani
Sapane suhaane ladakapan ke
Sara mora kajra chhuraya tune
Sun ye bhar-e-husn mujhe tumse pyar hai
Tere chehre se hate aankh to duniya dekhun
Tere jaisa kaun hai, tere jaisa koi nahi
Tujhe pyar krte hain krte rhenge
Tukade hain mere dil ke, ai yaar tere aansu
Tumhara chahne wala, khuda ki duniya me
Tumhaari nazar kyon khafa ho gai
Tumhen jo bhi dekh lega, kisi ka na ho sakega
Ye hai reshami, zulfon ka andhera na ghabaraiye
Yehi woh jagah hai, yehi woh fizayen
Ye meri jindagi, tu nahi ajanbi
Ye nayan dare dare, ye jaam bhare bhare, zara pine do
Ye parwaton ke dayre, ye sham ka dhuan
Ye samaa ye rut ye nazaare dil mera machalane laga
Zara nazaron se kah do ji nishana chhut na jaaye
Zindagi kitani khubasurat hai, aiye apaki zarurat hai

Kolkata, October 28, 2015 (Washington Bangla Radio): Veteran actor Biswajit Chatterji has been celebrating Durga Puja at their house in Mumbai for over a decade. The Chatterjee family Durga Puja is one of the most prominent and most visited Pujas of Mumbai.

This is the 12th year of this Puja. In spite of  having a very busy schedule, the “ chocolate boy hero "of  the silver screen of 1960-70s , had a candid chat with Washington Bangla Radio and shared his thoughts about his Puja.

Biswajit said “This year our Puja has stepped into 12th year. ‘ Twelve ‘ is a number which is spiritually very auspicious and this makes it more special to us. Also Twelve years is regarded by many as one yug (age). So having completed twelve years ,  now I can say that I have been doing Durga Puja for one yug.”
“This year Durga ma in our Puja has a calm and peaceful look , contrary to the aggressive image that we see in most of  the Pujas.  I had specifically requested Amit Pal, our idol artist to design Durga ma in such a way and he has done a wonderful job.  People often opt for aggressive aura in the Durga idols as Durga ma is seen as the epitome of ‘narishakti’ (Divine feminine power) and a force that can subdue evil. She is the Mahishasur mardini. But I feel peace has more power than any offensive force.“ added Biswajit.

When asked about the cultural programs they had this year, the actor said, “This year our Puja was devoid of any entertainment programs because those  programs act as a distraction from the Puja itself. Also the crowd that gathers to watch the programs often becomes unmanageable and creates a lot of noise and havoc. So we stuck to traditional dhak only. But there were a lot of stalls at our pandal and they had brought  the flavors of  Bengal. There were food stalls many of which served traditional Bengali cuisine. Bengali snacks like 'Shingara', different types of 'chops' and other things were also there and our guests had a good time savoring all those. We played Chandipath and Rabindra Sangeet during the festival which further added Bengali taste into our Puja. We wanted our guests to enjoy our Puja in a relaxed environment which would  give them a break from their busy life. So we avoided  anything that was on the louder side. I believe we can create festive mood even without being loud.”

We were also told that a number of
celebrities visited the Puja which included Vidya Balan, Rakesh Roshan, Tina Dutta along with a number of television stars.

Biswajit was spotted having a great time as his son Prosenjit Chatterjee, presently the biggest star of  the Bengali film industry, joined in the festivities of  his house. Biswajit’s daughter Pallabi who is also  a  fine actor, joined the Puja celebrations.

On being asked if he misses the Durga Puja of Kolkata, Biswajit said that he sorely misses the Durga puja of Kolkata and he used to miss it more in his early days  in Mumbai.

The actor also informed happily that his youngest daughter Pryma Chatterji had been helping him day and night in arranging the Puja. He specifically mentioned that the decoration of the Mandap was entirely conceptualized and handled by Pryma which added a new dimension to the aesthetics of the Puja environment.

op actor of yesteryear Biswajit is not in a very good financial state today. Supposedly his son, Prasenjit, who has been the number one star of Bengali cinema for more than a decade now, is not there to help him.
Biswajit and Prasenjit never got along after Biswajit separated from Prasenjit's mother Ratna.
The flashpoint in the father-son relationship was reached when Prasenjit parted ways with his first wife, Aparna Guhathakurta.Later he went on to marry famous Bengali actress Debashree Roy; their marriage was not a happy one. Today, Prasenjit lives in Kolkata with his third wife, Arpita Pal and their son Trishanjit.
While Biswajit and Prasenjit remained unavailable for comment, a source close to them confirmed the story saying, "Yes, this is true.
It's been very long since Biswajit and Prasenjit cut off all ties with each other. It will be a miracle if they ever even speak to each other again."
Incidentally Prasenjit lives in Kolkata with his third wife Arpita Pal and their son Trishanjit.
