Zubeen Garg (born Zubeen Borthakur; 18 November 1971)[1] is an Indian playback singer, music director, composer, songwriter, music producer, film director, film producer, actor and philanthropist.[2] His contributions are mostly attributed in Assamese, Bengali and Bollywood films and music.[3] Besides, his songs in Assamese, Garg has sung many songs in other languages and dialects, including Bishnupriya Manipuri, Bodo, English, Goalparia, Kannada, Karbi, Khasi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Tamil, Telugu and Tiwa. He is also an instrumentalist and plays dhol, guitar, mandolin, keyboard and various percussion instruments

Personal life
Garg hails from Jorhat, Assam but was born in Tura, Meghalaya. He was named after the composer Zubin Mehta and uses his gotra name, Garg, as his surname. His father Mohini Borthakur is also a poet and lyricist writing under the name Kapil Thakur. His mother Ily Borthakur was a dancer, actress and singer. Garg's did his schooling in various part of Assam including Jorhat, Karimganj, Bijni and Tamulpur. He did his 2 years Pre-University course from Jagannath Barooah College under Dibrugarh University. He then pursued a degree in Bachelor of Science from B. Borooah College, but dropped out to concentrate in his singing career.[1][7]

Garg's younger sister Jonkey Borthakur was an actress and singer who died in a car accident in 2002 near Tezpur while they were going to perform stage show along with her co-artists.[1] There after Garg made an album known as Shishu in memory of his late sister Jonkey.[8] His other sister Palme is a Bharata Natyam dancer.[citation needed]

Garg married Garima Saikia, a fashion designer from Golaghat, India on 4 February 2002.[9][10][11]

Career
Garg entered into the professional music when his debut album Anamika was released in 1992.[12] He later released albums including Maya, Asha and Pakhi. In the late 90's Garg moved to Mumbai to work in the Bollywood music industry where he recorded few Hindi albums and films like Chandni Raat, Yuhi Kabhi, Fiza and Kaante.[13]

He got the biggest break in Bollywood in the film Gangster.The song Ya Ali of Gangster[14] movie was one of the most popular hits of 2006. The song brought him the best playback singer Global Indian Film Awards(GIFA) in 2006. His next Hindi album Zindagi[15][16] was released in 2007 which was highly appreciated. His discography songs in various Indian languages.[17] In October 2019, he released a new Hindi song "Ranjhana" with Angel Rai and Sami Khan.[18]

Social work
Garg runs a charity which donates money for various causes. He urged people to donate clothes, medicines and contributions when devastating floods hit Assam.[19][20] He took on the issue over corruption in APSC recruitment in his movie Kanchanjangha.[2][21][22]

He is a football fan and has played matches to collect funds for flood affected people.[23][better source needed][24]

As an actor
Garg also has acted in few Assamese films. He played the lead role in Mon Jai, which won the best Assamese Film in the 56th National Film Awards.[
