She is the performer par excellence! She had a filmy career of more than 5 decades in various characters, starting from small roles to the Heroine to the Character Artist! Anjali Devi had carved her own niche on Indian Cinema, with her special style of acting, dance moves and beauty, which made her as the model to the next-generation actresses. The Queen of Entertainment of yesteryears, Anjali Devi, has passed away on 13th January, 2014 at Chennai in a hospital at the age of 86 years.

FROM STAGE TO FILMS:
Anjali Devi, originally named as Anjanee Kumari, had a stint with entertainment sector at the age of 8. She had a great passion for stage and dramas and her father Nookaiah, had joined her in YOUNG MEN’S HAPPY CLUB at Kakinada. She debuted on the stage with a play, HARISHCHANDRA and got the attention of the film makers like C. PULLAIAH. He offered her a small role in GOLLABHAMA (1947) and transformed Anjanee Kumari to Anjali Devi!
Prior to becoming a Heroine, Anjali Devi had undergone many upside downs. In her early career, she agreed to play the roles of a Vamp in the films like, SHIVA GANGA, MAYA RAMBHA, MADAALASA, BALARAJU, etc. At last, with the film, SRILAXMAMMA KATHA, she became a full-length heroine, with the encouragement of GHANTASALA BALARAMAYYA. The film was a flop, but Anjali Devi noticed by the film makers and they poured he r with offers.
SUVARNA SUNDARI TO LAVAKUSHA:
The decades, 1950s and 1960s, the Telugu Film world was totally captured with the aura and glory of Anjali Devi, when her films became super hits with the audience. Anjali Devi’s reign as the Queen of Telugu Silver Screen had started with ANARKALI (1955) and reached its zenith with SUVARNA SUNDARI (1957). Her portrayal, acting abilities and expressions blended with dances have spell-bounded the viewers and made her as the highly-sought-after Heroine of those times! Her later super hits like, CHENCHU LAXMI (1958) and JAYABHERI (1959) had proved it again!

The greatest irony is that, in the later career of Anjali Devi, she acted as the mother to ANR and NTR in many movies. She is an ardent lover of performing arts and took up the characters of mother to the heroes, to whom ones, she had been paired up with as heroine!
It is very interesting that, she has acted as the old mother alongside NTR in BADI PANTHULU, when she was young. She take that character as a challenge and played the role and made it as an everlasting character in the history of Tollywood!
27 FILMS AS PRODUCER:
Anjali Devi not only confined herself to acting, but also extended her interest in film making and established her own production houses to make the films of her interest. She has started her first film production house, Ashwini Pictures with partners in 1949 and made films like MAYALA MAARI. In 1951, she started her own production company, ANJALI PICTURES. She had produced more than 27 films under this banner. Of the list includes the successful films like, PARADESHI, ANARKALI, SUVARNA SUNDARI, SATEE SUMATHI, BHAKTA TUKARAM, KSHETRAYYA, etc.
MARRIAGE & MOVIES:
When Anjali Devi is actively involved in the Stage dramas at Kakinada, she has got the opportunity to introduce with Adinarayanarao, then the budding musician. Later, Anjali and Adinarayanarao got married in 1940, well before her acting debut in the films. But she had realized all her wishes and took a plunge in cinema, with the support and encouragement of her husband. Both of them made a perfect couple and lived their life for the art of cinema and reached heights in their respective paths as an actress and music composer respectively, simultaneously.
Here, it is mention-worthy that, unlike the rule of those times, Anjali Devi played heroine roles after becoming a mother of two children! In general, marriage and children will put a full-stop to the career of the heroine in getting the acceptance from the audience. But Anjali Devi had proved it wrong and ruled the show world with all the charm and craze! Credit goes to her acting prowess!!
AWARDS & HONOURS:
Anjali Devi is the first Telugu Heroine to won 4 Film Fare awards as Best Actress, and with a hat-trick! She had honoured with the prestigious RAGHUPATHI VENKAYYA AWARD for the year 2005, by the Govt. of AP.

Chennai: Telugu actor Chandramohan remembers late actress Anjali Devi and says that ever since he played her son in his debut movie - 1966 Telugu drama 'Rangula Ratnam' - he treated her as his mother.
I will always remain her son. I started off my career by playing her son in 'Rangula Ratnam', and since then we have shared a mother-son relationship. I still can't digest the news that she is no more. I feel like I have lost my mother," Chandramohan told IANS.
Anjali Devi died Monday due to heart-related problems. She was 86. She is survived by two sons
He said that Anjali treated him as her own son.
"Sometimes roles in films are only limited to the screen, but my relationship with her (Anjali) continued off the sets too. She always treated me like her own son and would make it a point to attend all my felicitation ceremonies," he added.
Chandramohan feels she is irreplaceable.
Born in 1928 as Anjani Kumar, she made her cinematic debut as a child artist in a 1936 film. It was director C. Pullaiah who rechristened Anjani as Anjali Devi.
Before entering films, Anjali was a popular theatre artist.
Mostly known for starring in mythological and family dramas, Anjali became a household name with memorable performances in films such as "Lava Kusha", 'Bhakta Prahlada', 'Bhakta Tukaram' and 'Badi Pantulu'.
She had also starred in a few Tamil films such as 'Niraparadhi' and 'Sarvadhikari' and Hindi movies like 'Devta' and 'Sri Ram Vanvas'.
Under her banner Anjali Pictures, she had also produced about 20 successful films such as 'Anarkali', 'Paradesi' and 'Suvarna Sundari'.
Anjali Devi's last rites will be performed at Besant Nagar crematorium here Thursday.

When asked about some unforgettable experiences in her career, she narrated some very interesting incidents in an affable and exciting tone. “I set my foot on the floors of Neptune Studio for the shooting schedule of the film ‘Mohini’ in the year 1946 on the day of Bogi on 13th January. I was transformed into an angel with white robes on. My role was to lure the king who was dancing with his wife and take him to the ‘Devalog’. When the director told me that I would appear to the eyes of the king as his wife and that the king would hug and kiss me, I was shocked beyond words. At that time, I was already a mother and I refused to be kissed. The director spoke to my husband and my husband described the shot to me, how it would be taken etc. He said that it would be enough if I kept my head in a slanting position and that the camera would do the trick. But today, kissing shots are actually done and taken; it is really a condemnable ‘advancement’.
‘Aadhithyan kanavu’, directed by T. R. Sundaram was a major break in my career. The film ran for more than hundred days. I started getting major roles after this hit movie. Only after this movie I got the role of Sita in the film ‘Lava Kucha’, directed by Pulliah who was by then convinced of my capacity for nuance acting. The film became a prefix to my name in Andhra. During the shooting of the film ‘Chakravarthy thirumagal’, MGR surprised me by revealing the decision of the film industry to elect me as the president of the South Indian Artistes Association. I refused stating that I couldn’t read Tamil and that I had no experience in these responsibilities, but MGR didn’t accept my excuses and eventually succeeded in making me agree to the offer. I held the term for one year. Recently a felicitation was held by the association for me for being the first woman president and for M. N. Rajam for being the first woman member of the association. All the present day artistes including Rajnikant choked me with their love and affection.
I acted as the sister-in-law of MGR in the film ‘Urimaikural’ and I was the mother of Rajni in ‘Annai orr aalayam’. I get offers for the roles of mother and grandmother, but I don’t accept them because of my health problems. Those days when I acted with great artistes like Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, N. T. Rama Rao, Nageswara Rao, Savithri, Jamuna, Padmini, Bhanumathi, Vyjanthimala etc. are really ‘golden days’ in my career. They’ll remain evergreen in my memory.
I am a staunch devotee of Sai Baba. I produced a serial on Sathya Sai Baba and telecast it for my own satisfaction. I keep in touch with S. N. Lakshmi, Sachu, P. Susheela, Rajasulochana and K. R. Vijaya and talk to them over the phone. “
Anjali Devi’s 80th birthday was celebrated grandly on 27th February, 2010 by her sons Chinna Rao and Niranjan Kumar and her daughters-in-law Vijayalakshmi Rao and Bharathi Devi and her grandchildren at Chennai. Film personalities, political leaders and business people all attended the function. And, I feel very happy to say that I was also part of that function coordinating things.
The Telugu writer Ravikondal Rao is writing the biography of Anjali Devi and I’ve been blessed to be given the responsibility to write the Tamil version. It is my wish and appeal that both the State and the Central governments recognize her unparalleled contribution to cinema and honor her with prestigious awards. Let us all pray to God to bless this great woman with a long and healthy life.
Smt. Anjali Devi was born and grew up in the beautiful seaside town of Peddapuram, in Kakinada on 25th October, 1928. She started acting in stage plays at a tender age of eight years. It is ironic that male artists such as ANR, started their careers as a female and Anjali Devi as a male. Her first stage appearance was as ‘LOHITASYA’ the son of Raja Harichandra and their drama club was named ‘Young Men’s Happy Club’. It was during these days that she met Sri. P Adinarayana Rao, who was later to be her husband, He was the member of their troupe and scripted the plays and composed music for them. Her first recognition was in 1943 by Sir Arthur Hope, Governor, in the form of a gold medal and a citation, in appreciation of the play ‘Street Singers’, written by Adinarayana Rao Anjali Devi was introduced to Cinema, by C. Pullaiah as Mohini, the heavenly beauty, in ‘Golla Bhama’. The grateful heroine had worked in a box office hit and never looked back. Then began a series of block busters and trend setters of those times - ‘Bala Raju’, ‘Mahatma Udangar’ (Tamil), ‘Keelu Gurram’, ‘Srilakshmamma Katha’, ‘Swapna Sundari’, ‘Raksha Rekha’, ‘Ek The Raaja’ (Hindi), etc.. She never looked back and went on to complete around 400 films as heroine in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. In 1950, the couple established their own production house. Their bilingual, ‘Pardesi’ had stalwarts working in the production. LV Prasad directed it, Adinarayana Rao composed music, Kamal Gosh was Director of photography and Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi played the lead roles. They also had the opportunity to introduce legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan. Anjali Pictures employed the latest techniques of those times – with the help of Santha Ram, ‘slow motion’ was introduced to the South. Their productions were known for music with haunting melody. ‘ANARKALI’ and ‘SWARNA SUNDARI’, starring ANR, touched the hearts of audience and took Anjali Pictures to new heights. The banner went on to produce 28 films in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. One cannot forget musicals like ‘RUNAANU BANDHAM, SATI SUMATHI, SATI SAKKU BAI, SWARNA MANJARI, MAHA KAVI KSHETRAYYA, and BHAKTA TUKARAM’. Anjali Pictures became a household name for Music and Period Films. ‘Maha Kavi Kshetrayya’ was awarded the Golden Nandi by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. One cannot but remember Anjali Devi as Sita in ‘Lava Kusa’. She won the Presidents Gold Medal as the best actress for this epic. She entered the collective consciousness of the people of Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu as Sita, the wife of Rama. Cart loads of people visited her and devotedly addressed her as ‘Seethamma’. She felt it was Rama himself blessing her. Fame and recognition followed. The Government of Andhra Pradesh honoured her with the Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu Award, The Government of Tamilnadu with the titles, Natana Siromani, Kalai Selvi and the life time achievement Award, the Arignar Anna Award. In recognition of her services, she was appointed as the life senate member of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi, as Vice President of South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, as President of Nadigar Sangam, Tamilnadu and as Director of AP Film development Corporation. She is a proud mother of two sons who are leading professionals in America and a doting grandmother to two granddaughters and a grandson. One of her Granddaughters is an aspiring actress and an accomplished dancer. Being true to the vagaries of life, she and her family faced severe financial losses in the making of a Hindi film. Life seemed hostile, lonely and unsympathetic. But then she found refuge in the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Hope revived slowly and surely. Courage and fortitude were the answers. The devotional film, ‘Sati Sakkubhai’ was started and revived her fortunes, followed by ‘Baktha Tukaram’. They turned out be multi-lingual super hits. She found that miseries are like clouds – they will come, but then will also leave. She is a proud colleague to legends such as MG Ramachandran, NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalithaa. Three of them had gone on to become Chief Ministers of their respective states. She had a dream since 1943 to make a bio-film on Sri. Sathya Sai Baba. After great persistence, she was given permission to produce a tele-serial in name of ‘Shirdi Sai Parthi Sai Divya Katha’, in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and English. It was well appreciated by the devotees of Sri. Sathya Sai Baba from all over the world. Anjali Devi symbolized and participated as a key member of the golden era of South Indian Cinema. And therefore will be immortalized in its history. |
Sai Lang grew up on the east coast, but her artistic side came from her familial roots in India. Her grandmother was a celebrated actress that introduced her to the world of Tollywood. Sai was the young lead in two Tollywood films before returning to the US. She started improvising and writing sketch at the UCB Theatre and is an in-house actor/writer there, where she also co-founded the first all-South Asian sketch team The Get Brown. She was also a cast member and wrote for the 2020 CBS Showcase.
