PORAIYAAR NADARS

Zamindar Thavsumuthu Nadar was one of the most inspiring and iconic men in the Nadar community. He always encouraged to create educational opportunities for the underprivileged children beyond boundaries as he strongly believed that education was the single most powerful tool that could alleviate poverty.



In the year 1862, Society for Propagation of the Gospel (S.P.G. Mission), a Christian missionary, opened a school in Porayar.[1] Following his inspiring vision, Zamindar Thavasumuthu Nadar pursued in buying this school from the mission and on the 1st of April 1882, he purchased the school and re-named it as Thavasumuthu Nadar’s school” and appointed an Englishman, Mr. Neiler as its first headmaster, who served till 1912.


The school provided free education to the children of all communities. Built in a 10-acre property, the students have the benefit of a big play ground.



J.H Stone, Education Director of Madras Presidency (1915) quotes:


“The school has attained that status of complete Secondary School, of which I believe it is doing its best to make it worthy, I am glad to learn that the Nadar’s propose to build a handsome and commodious schoolhouse on a very good size in the neighbourhood. I wish the school every success”


In 1920, the management opened a hostel for the school.


National Cadet Corps NCC (Naval Wing and Infantry wing) was set in the school in 1958.


Muthusamy Iyer assumed the office of headmaster in 1959, during his period, he has strived hard for the development of the school. He has brought in several donors for contracting new building.


Commonly known as Nadar High school, Thavasumuthu Nadar’s High school has been a landmark in the education of the Tanjore district for more than 100 years.


Since its inception, his descendants have been building several buildings on the school campus.



 


Mr Kakkan, Minister for Public Works, Govt of Tamilnadu, opened a building on 1960.

Ms Maragatham Chandrasekar, Deputy Home Minister, Govt of India, laid the stone for the foundation of the school’s new building in 1963.

In 1972, a building with science lab was opened by media baron Dr Sivanthi Adityan.

110th-year Commemoration building was opened by Mr PV Rajendran, Member of Parliament (Mayiladuthurai Constituency)


Mr K. Anbazhagan, Minister of Education, Govt of Tamilnadu, opened an auditorium in 2000.

Recently, washrooms worth Rs. 30 lakhs have been donated by the grandson of Thavasumuthu Nadar, Mr Balasubramanian Adityan (media baron, MD of Daily Thanthi Group), District Collector S. Suresh Kumar IAS inaugurated this health complex in 2018.

Nadar high school sports championship title and the participation of the Porayar Nadar estate family in sports:


It all started when a small kid from the Nadar estate found an old badminton racquet in his backyard and started hitting a badminton ball off the garage door nearby where his grandfather’s broughams were parked.


When the shots began to make dents in the cars and garage door, the people in the family noticed this kid’s interest in the sport and knew there was something special in him.



T.G.R. Jaykumar started playing badminton young and had no plans to stop till he was crowned with the championship title in 1968.








The man who has a calm demeanour, boyish shyness and the looks of a star proved again and again by adding pride to the family.






His daughter Jayshree Jaykumar is ranked amongst the top 100 archers in the country. Her skills in the field happen to be extraordinary as she is a natural-born shooter. T.G.R. Jaykumar envisioned his daughter as a champion when she was a little girl.


Beginning in late 2019’s, with her outgoing personality and result of hours of training, natural ability and a powerful determination to win, Nadar estate’s Jayshree Jaykumar won the State Championship in Archery in 2019 (Compound Bow Archery).












Jayshree Jaykumar commanded attention by consequently winning and being ranked amongst the top 100 archers in the country in the tournament held at National Capital Delhi in 2020.
